Well, went to Circuit City today, picked up a few scores... Decided to go out on a limb and purchase The Legend of Bagger Vance. I don't own any Rachel Portman scores, but simply judging from FilmTracks review, I gave it a try. All I gotta say is wow, I'm only on my first listen and I'm already loving it to death. (Note, I hardly ever even LIKE most scores on the first listen). I haven't seen the movie due to bad things I've heard, but just wondering why I haven't heard anybody talking about this score. I almost picked up The Cider House Rules there as well, but figured that might be too risky. What else is good from her?

Jason, BAGGER is a beautiful score. The film was touching (almost spiritual), as well. Shame on you for relying on what others say about it (before you see it for yourself). This is definitely one of my top picks of the year. She even manages to take a snippet from Black Beauty and make it all her own! I'm sure there was no way around *that* portion of the temp track. Clever woman, she is.

CIDER is just as great, though BAGGER remains my personal favorite of the two. CIDER is of course a different story with a different thematic center, so everything gravitates toward that a little differently (in other words, it's just different enough to be enough different!) . Alot of Portman's work is very similar, except (and correct me if I'm wrong), The Joy Luck Club and Beloved (that one's waaay out there).

Anyway... I've rambled on long enough. Glad you enjoy the score, Jason! Yet another great choice.

    Jer
