Hey, it looks like month-long MovieMusic.com Polls are no problem! I thought I'd be removing the "Best score from a Presidential movie" Poll within about a week of the election, but no. Just as the Florida supreme court makes up new laws as they go, severely undermining the constitution of the USA (read: big problem), I will make up rules regarding the MovieMusic.com Poll as we go along (read: who cares?!). It's just not the season for polls, I guess, as Independence Day and Air Force One are within half of a percent of each other for the top spot. New law: until one or the other is ahead by 5%, the poll will remain forever. Simple, eh?Kidding.
I am in the process of narrowing down the selections for the next poll, which is quite shocking: Best Score of 2000. We've nearly heard everything that is to be written this year, so now's the time to come up with a list of not more than TEN scores to be included on this list. So, with everyone's help, I figure it shouldn't be to hard to come up with this list.
So, list away. Give me your ten favorites that would make the "Best Score of 2000" poll a fair one. Thanks, dudes and dudettes!

Hahahaha, another one who sees the Florida Supreme court's action as what they are...
List:The Patriot
Dinosour
Gladiator
Hollow Man
Perfect Storm
Mission to Mars
What lies Beneath
Chicken Run
Unbreakable
Love Letters
(honoray mention), Medal of Honor (underground), since it is not a movie soundtrack. If it counts, it would really be number three.

(I dislike Top 10 Lists, but this is an interesting one, and since I just ranted about this in referencing "High Fidelity" in another thread, I thought what the heck....)1. MEDAL OF HONOR: UNDERGROUND (No, it's not a movie--it's better. I say count it.)
2. GLADIATOR. (Big surprise.)
3. THE PATRIOT. (Amazing!)
4. DINOSAUR. (How many can hook you from a preview alone?)
5. PASSION OF MIND. (Why haven't you listened to this one yet?)
6. CHICKEN RUN. (Amazing, too!)
7. SHANGHAI NOON. (Doesn't Edelman rest? Keep it up!)
8. HIGHLANDER: ENDGAME. (Someone had to do it.)
9. UNBREAKABLE. (This really *is* good.)
10. PAY IT FORWARD. (Continuing the AMERICAN BEAUTY trend...)
11. MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2. (Only for those who loved GLADIATOR.)posted 12-06-2000 01:58 PM PT (US)

I'm not sure I've heard FIVE scores worthy of my short list this year, let alone ten.THE CELL is certainly top of the list. X-MEN was superb.
After that, it's more of a question of "which was the most competent," as opposed to "what was REALLY amazing." THE PATRIOT and HOLLOW MAN fall into this category. So does MISSION TO MARS and GLADIATOR. I guess DINOSAUR was adequate, but it didn't do a thing for me.
I haven't heard Christopher Young's BLESS THE CHILD yet, but expect to be thoroughly amazed; obviously, though, I can't submit it.
Fact is, I've seen fewer movies this year than usual, so am not even certain of what the landscape was like. My favorite albums of the year have tended to be issues of older scores ...

No one has mentioned QUILLS yet. Noticing this film is the best picture of the year (according to the National Board of Review), and the fact that Oscar-winner Stephen Warbeck wrote the score, I have a very strong feeling this score is going to make it in the running for Oscar, even with only five contending slots this year! What do you think, eh? Keep the lists coming!

Okay, here's my ten (although remember we haven't had some of the more recent ones here in the UK yet):
The Beach,
Chicken Run,
Crow Salvation,
Dragonheart:A New Beginning,
Hollow Man,
The Lost Child,
The Ninth Gate,
Scream 3,
Up at the Villa,
The Watcher.Oh. I was going to just list all the ones I really liked (that I've heard) from the yr 2000 list ( http://www.moviemusic.com/search/year.asp?2000 ), & then cut it down to just 10. But whaddya know? Just 10 came out. Well, there we are then. Although, incidentally, you don't have McKenzie's The Lost Child in the database yet, PeterK. Or should I just call you K?

Yeah, what JJ said. Add Bless The Child and Hollow Man, but take away Girl, Interrupted, as that was from last year.Shaun

Ok, here's what the list looks like at this point (in alphabetical order):The Cell
Chicken Run
Dinosaur
Gladiator
Hollow Man
Mission to Mars
The Patriot
The Perfect Storm
Unbreakable
What Lies BeneathThis list is a result of a popularity contest, and is by no means a measure of the real quality scores of the year (like Quills).
The list will go up soon, but there is still room for discussion, so keep it up!
NP - "Films of the Century" ehh... (why is Blair Witch 2 on this comp? Just because a music company owns some rights here and there doesn't necessarily mean they HAVE to use it! Please.)

Really, I'm pretty satisfied with that list, except for one problem: if this is a popularity contest, Gladiator will win.

(why is Blair Witch 2 on this comp? Just because a music company owns some rights here and there doesn't necessarily mean they HAVE to use it! Please.)I thought the same thing about seeing Speed on there. Dr. Zhivago, Lawrence Of Arabia, Gone With The Wind...........SPEED!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Milan compilations are just plain awful. The "Hidden Treasures Of Film Music" disc features some of the worst-written (and researched) liner notes and potentially misleading information I've seen in a soundtrack release. It's right up there with the Varese Jaws disc, and the Prometheus Contract On Cherry Street.
Anyway, what were we talking about?

Well, Shaun "Ass" Rutherford has done the impossible, and shown that I am indeed fallible after all. This is wholly disappointing, not just to me, but my legions of followers, who now have to find another paragon of wisdom and virtue.
I nominate Shaun.
Girl, Interrupted is indeed from last year, and a fabulous score to boot. for some reason, in my database I have it listed as a 2000 score. Sh!te.
I would instead like to expunge GI from my list and replace it with a nomination for Quills, by Stephen Warbeck.Having not heard it means I can go ahead do this.
