I know this a bit off the topic here but I was just curious as to how many members of this message board actually listen to other types of music other than film music? I myself listen to Film Music & Rock/Metal Music. So, do you listen to Film Music? Rock? Rap? Others? Or all of them?

NP: Alien *****/***** (Thanks again Lou Goldberg!)

I like anything with any emotional depth.

I listen to a lot of different music; I think it just helps broaden your appreciation to have exposure to all types of music -- and film music is the one genre that can encompass any other genre that currently exists (or that can be created).

My tastes tend to shift every now and then when it comes to pop/rock; I've started listening to more 'alt.country' and 'folk/rock' in the last couple of years... hated rap when it first surfaced, but now can listen to it & make critical assessments (although it's not my favorite form of musical expression). Still listen to classical ('old school' & contemporary)... and I do reserve the right to some guilty pleasures.

Maybe it would help to list (a SHORT list) of other groups/performers - do some research and some listening:

    Ed's Redeeming Qualities
    American Music Club/Mark Eitzel
    John Zorn
    The Billy Nayer Show
    Glass Eye/Kathy McCarty
    The Smithereens
    Tarnation
    Kelly Hogan/The Jody Grind
    Stan Ridgeway/Wall of Voodoo
    Guadalcanal Diary
    X
    Joe Jackson
    House of Freaks

I don't listen to a lot of 'top-40' stuff anymore - too vapid. Probably a sign of my advancing age...

Also wanted to second Tim's comment on 'emotional depth' being a big draw on what shapes a good majority of what's listened to & what gets me to part with substantial amounts of money on a monthly basis.

    You're welcome Pyro....

I know a guy who loves Japanese classical and Metal bands.

I like Swing and BeBop, various Classical works, 50s 60s and late 70s and 80s rock (Chuck Berry, The Beatles, Joe Jackson, etc.), earlier Popular Song (Sinatra, etc.).
I'm not a Rap fan in general, but when the songs are funny or pointed, I can enjoy them.

Still, having heard a wide amount of music, I must say that Film Music is the match for the way my emotional centers are wired--it's what I listen to most and where 95% of my buying budget goes. But this is just me and I've spent the time, money, and listening time to get here. I advise everyone to taste Green Eggs and Ham every once in a while because you never know what new pleasure you might find....

While I wholeheartedly love film music, there is a couple genres that I enjoy listening to also, classic and modern rock. In actuality, though, there is only two modern rock bands that I would consider to be great, those being Radiohead (the best) and Coldplay (these guys can make terrific music, and they have a very bright future). As for classic rock, there are more bands that I would list in this genre to be great (Led Zepellin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Doors, etc.), but there is one particular band that I think is the greatest rock and roll band there ever was and the most influential out of all of them. That band being Creedance Clearwater Revival.

I also listen to the late Jeff Buckley (who died an unfortunate death none too long ago at too young an age). He has one of the, if not the, most beautiful, moving voices I have ever heard. It saddens me to know that his greatness as a musician was so short-lived with his tragic death. But the material he did release while he was alive contains some of the most moving songs I've heard.

I also listen to Mogwai, a very different band all together. They don't sing, but rather create music. They are an interesting group and they make some very cool music.

I listen to other groups, but those are a few that stand above the rest. I don't really like many other genres besides film music, classic rock, and modern rock. I can stand some rap songs, hardly any country songs, and no Nysnc-Backstreet-Boys-Brittany Spears-Christina Aquilera-type music. I know they can sing (kind of) but, I'm sorry, I just don't have much respect for people who don't write their own material or, at the very least, play their own instruments. However, they are just a product, so I suppose those things are irrelevant. They're just supposed to look good....anyway, like I said, I love film music, but I need other music as well, and I think it's a good thing to be able to listen to a large variety of music.

I have a friend who loves Jeff Buckley. He played me his albums as well as his sketches for the one he was working on when he died. This guy played me a lot of what is termed 'Alternative Country', a gloomy kind of Art Country that is nothing like Garth Brooks & co., and a lot of it was great. And speaking of great voices--Victoria Williams.

The only music I really like to listen to is film scores and classical music. But for some strange reason I do like listening to
those silly disco songs from the 70's. I don't buy the music but I do listen to it on the radio. I do try to keep up with the latest in Hip-Hop, R&B and Rap because everyone I know listen to that sort of stuff. I can't say that I like that music very much because after a few years most of it sounds tired.

I have only bought one pop album. The Matrix. I really like that song by Rob D, Clubbed to Death.

I listen to different types of music... mostly classical, film scores, and (somewhat less) jazz, world music, and to a much lesser degree pop, rock, and whatever. There are considerably more classical CDs in my collection than film scores, anything from Albioni to Bach, from Mahler to Boulez to Vivaldi, Wagner and Zemlinsky. Heck, there's even Stockhausen to be found. So film music is just a part -- an important part, but just a part nevertheless -- of what I listen to.

Soundtrack buying takes up at least 85% of my CD purchasing budget. There are only a handful of groups out there that I will pay money to buy their latest CDs:

Metallica - I have most of their albums
Collective Soul - have all 5 albums to date
Limp Bizkit - my guilty pleasure - I love 'em

I mainly focus on film and classical music, both more or less equally important. I've become a Rolling Stones fan, too. Aside from that, I only like some specific songs, nothing I could really generalize. A bit of blues (Blues Brothers album, or some Eric Clapton), and the Pulp Fiction song album. I think I can enjoy rather much of the "oldies", but I don't like most of what comes out today. I rather like jazz, too, but don't listen to it delibrately.

I pretty much like loads of different musical genres, although nowadays it's not often I acutally buy a non-score CD.

I like classical, rock, dance, most electronic music, jazz, blues and some pop.
I'm not into rap and R&B much.

Some bands/acts I'm really into are:

    Queen
The Beatles (I consider these 2 the best ever)
    REM
    The Prodigy
    Radiohead
    U2
    Live
    Moby
    Fatboy Slim

Can't think of any more right now.

With regards to Top 40 music, I find most of it quite enjoyable, except the amazingly shallow boy band/ girl band songs that all sound the same.

And I love it when popular acts use orchestra - like Wyclef Jean in 'Gone till Novemeber'. Great stuff.

I listen to jazz, blues and classical music. My favorite jazz musicians are Django Reinhardt, Lightnin' Hopkins, Miles Davis and Medeski Martin and Wood. The soundtracks for Crumb and Sweet and Lowdown I enjoy.

On the classical side, I like John Cage, and Gygory Ligeti (there maybe more that escape me at the moment).
