Forgot to mention above: The new European DVD release of Total Recall. I never picked up the US version because of the reportedly bad quality, but the European disc is very good. And I was glad to see (or rather hear) that Schwarzenegger's English sounds still as goofy and funny as it did in Conan.
Now waiting for the expanded score release!

well,
saw these today for 5 bucks new and you just have to get when they're that cheap:Return of the Magnificent Seven, Elmer
The Knack and How to Get It, John Barry
The Great Escape, Elmer
and the most pleasant discovery I have ever made:a cassette, sadly a cassette not a CD, of Philippe Sarde's The Bear.
absolutely stunning work.
there were also cassettes of
The Marrying Man, David Newman &
The Beast, Mark Ishamthought about getting them, but wasn't sure.
I need to buy a tape player with a line out on it, so I can transfer to CDR.posted 12-05-2000 02:07 PM PT (US)

I sent an order into FSM:- Stagecoach & The Loner (I can't go any longer without having The Loner's theme in my collection!)
- The Poseidon Adventure/etc. (I guess I'd better get this one before it's sold out.)
I'll be amazed if I get them, since I never received a confirmation email...

A welcome surprise. Some time ago I ordered Pan Tandeuz by Kilar from CDNow for $18. Then all the usual suppliers sold out. Then it returned again, but at $24 over at Screen Archives. I'd given up all hope and was expecting CDNow to tell me they couldn't get one in (I'd been waiting like 2 months). And hey! It's on the way at the cheaper price. Between this and the CDRs people have sent and the stuff I ordered, I have weeks of great new stuff to listen to. Thanks God.

Actually, according to James Southall, it is. Supposedly "Varèse Sarabande" will be releasing it next month, in a similar way they had released Ottman's Cruel Intentions album, last month. Anyway, here is what he had to say, for those interested!

quote:
Varèse are releasing a soundtrack for "Castaway" which will also feature Alan Silvestri themes from previous Robert Zemeckis films. Released 30 January 2001.
Sounds good to me! I have been looking forward to this score. And was disappointed to hear, it was of such short length. In this case, some is definitely better than none, right?

I would sugest 1900.
Really contains some of Morricone's best music.but I hear Chicken Run is a fabulously entertaining listen.
The Piano should be obtained for the solo piano pieces Nyman composed. The orchestral and string pieces that make up the score tend to get very tiresome after a while.
no clue on Romeo + Juliet

At last! My first new CDs of December!Nausicaa - Hisaishi
Works: II - Hisaishi
Best Selection - HisaishiAlas, Supercollector informs me that they are out of Amanda, but will ship it to me as soon as they can.
NP: Nausicaa, Hisaishi: This is the first Hisaishi CD I've been less than impressed by. The theme is good, but there are rather poor synths, two annoying e-guitar tracks (where the heck did THAT come from?) and and the solo boy soprano who sings the "la la la" tracks on the score seems to have trouble hitting the notes correctly. In the end, I think all the best parts of this score were included in the suite on Works: I, and the proformance on that CD is quite superior. Still, I can't really dislike Nausciaa. Despite the faults I listed, there is some good material here. It's just that it can be found, and a bit better, elsewhere. ***

So, how is Silvestri's The Quick and the Dead? I have been thinking of getting it, is it worth acquiring?

Will:Get CHICKEN RUN and LEGEND OF 1900 first.
The two couldn't be more different, thematically or in their realization, if they tried. They are also incredibly good scores that play very well seperated from their movies.
LEGEND OF 1900 deserved an Academy Nomination last year.
CHICKEN RUN deserves an Academy nomination this year.
Get them both, man.

New in the mail from Amazon (plus many Christmas presents):
How To Make An American Quilt, T. NewmanAlso:
The Road To El Dorado DVD
Thirteen Days, Trevor Jones
I WANTED to get Vertical Limit, but I went to Best Buy and they didn't have one. I asked about it, and the guy says "yeah, it came in today, should be in stock." He walks off, looks around, eventually comes back with somebody else. She says "Oh, we only got one copy in." I'm like, "Why would you order just one of ANYTHING? I mean, it's the only number of anything you DON'T want to have! I can see you ordering zero, if you don't think it will sell, or maybe ordering three because you think you'll sell a couple, but one? If you're going to sell ONE, in the first twelve hours it's on the shelf no less, odds are you'll sell more!" By this point they're both giving me this sort of pained look. I calm down a bit and ask if they'll be getting more. She says "oh, it might not have been sold. If it was stolen, the computer won't know. And even if it was sold, the computer won't register it until tomorrow, and then it'l order more." "You mean ONE more, right?" I ask. She doesn't know, but says "it'll be in in a couple of days. Well, maybe a week."
Forget that. I'll find my 3-dollar-off coupon and get it from MusicLand tomorrow.
NP: Thirteen Days, Trevor Jones: This is surprisingly good. Good theme, and some great militaristic music. ****
