That’s what I am going to call a three CD set that I am putting together to give to non film score fans for Christmas this year. It will have a fully illustrated booklet (written by moi) and will be professionally printed and full color inserts and disc labels. I have designed some nice cover art and all is good to go, but…

It occurred to me that I might be missing some great music so I want your opinion on what should go on this CD set. I will post a final list when it is done

    Keep in mind the following:

    1. This is for NON-Film Scores folk. So the music should be awesome and accessible (In other words, no scores that we might like just because of a cool 12 note progression played on tambourine).

    2. Please don’t tell me what you hate on my or anybody else’s list. Tell me what will help my family and friends enjoy some the greatest music they have never heard.

    3. I have many scores, but I don’t have all scores, so if I don’t use your suggestion I might not be able to.

    4. The more creative the better. I am sure that there are some really cool things I just won’t think of until it is too late. Help Me!!!!

Here is what I am considering so far:

    Sabrina (Main Title)
    The Wheat - Gladiator
    The Battle - Gladiator
    Bajo Fuego - Under Fire
Caine Mutiny – Caine Mutiny March (Gerhardt)
How to Steal A Million (Main Title)
Passepartout – Around the World in 80 Days
    The Sea Hawk Gerhardt Suite
The Nun's Story ( Main Title)
    Wait Until Dark(Main Title)
Moon River – Breakfast at Tiffany’s (Audrey Hepburn version)
Adventures of Robin Hood - Gerhardt Suite
    Captain Blood – Gerhardt Suite
The Duel of Fates – The Phantom Menace
    Little Library Music - Magnolia
    Jaws (Main Title/First Victim)
    Return to Oz (End Titles)

As an incentive, I will try to use at least one track by everyone who posts a response.

    hmmmm...

any number of western themes should work.
if you want something more contemporary, try The Hi-Lo Country. Tremendous theme.

jazz influenced scores should work, too, like Russia House, Playing by Heart, Chinatown, LA Confidential, Hammett, etc.

    Shawshank Redemption
    Powder
Braveheart never fails to strike a chord with people-"For Love of a Princess"

The Minus Man, main titles, good stuff
    Mars Attacks!, main titles
    Conspiracy Theory, very Mancini-esque Overture
Snow Falling on Cedars, "Tarawa" track

and most stuff by Patrick Doyle. "Connie's Song" from Mrs Winterbourne is particularly good, as is the theme from Great Expectations.

    NP -- Unbreakable, JNH

The theme from The Last Starfighter is popular among non-film score fanatics, I've found out.

An Ennio Morricone western piece is a must... something from Good, Bad, & The Ugly or Fistful of Dollars. MAYBE Once Upon A Time In The West.

The Crimson Tide theme would probably fare well. That or Backdraft.

The end credits from Star Trek: First Contact would be great.

    What about Rudy?

"Kissing In The Rain" from Great Expectations?

    Ok. I'm done for now.

I've thought about this from time to time. I figure short cues with bold themes, but there are all sorts of approaches.

I'd start out with the studio fanfares from the Gerhardt CD because they are very familiar and will get people in a filmish mood. Korngold--King's Row title, March of the Merry Men from Robin Hood.

See I don't know what you have.

I mean I could say The Edge, Cliffhanger, Snows of Kilimanjaro waltz, the choir nativity cues and Parade of the Charioteers from Ben-Hur, but I don't know if you own any of these. 4 cues from Jane Eyre by Williams--Overture, Main Title, the carriage scherzo and string quartet pieces whose titles elude me. Various Marches--there was a whole list at some other post. I'm drawing a blank and will have to return to this after looking at some CDs.

Perhaps you might try some of the other Williams classics like:

    1. Superman
    2. Indiana Jones (End Credits for Indy 3)
    3. Jurassic Park (Journey to the Island)
    4. The Patriot (The Patriot, Anne and Gabriel)
    5. TPM (Anakin is Free)

Or if they are too "cliched", try

    1. Gattaca (The Morrow, The Arrival, It Must Be the Light, Irene's Theme, The Other Side, The Departure, Irene and the Morrow) pick one.

    2. Days of Thunder (if you have it) (Main Titles - Start your Engines, Cole & Claire - Rent-a-car Race)

    3. Dragonheart (To The Stars)

    4. The Rock (Hummell Gets the Rockets)

    5. Armageddon (The Launch, A Wing and A Prayer)

    6. American Beauty (Dead Already, Arose, American Beauty, Walk Home, Any Other Name)

    7. Pocahontas (Departure)

That's all I could think of right now. Will post more when I can think of more.

NP Final Fantasy VIII (Nobuo Uematsu) (*****)

    4. The Mask of Zorro (The Plaza Execution, Elana & Esperanza, Fencing Lesson)

    Great idea...

Last of the Mohicans (Main Theme) is quite popular...

I would recommend some of Horner's old works...Glory's Main Theme or Willow.

The Rocketeer theme would work well.

Will mentioned "Too many notes, not enough rests" from Drop Zone. This is a good cue, but it's around 10 minutes long! I think it is more effective for non-film score fans to be given short but sweet cues.

How about something from films they've probably seen? Using music from blockbusters might mean that they recognise some of it.

    Apollo 13 - End Credits
Stargate - Giza, 1928 (i think that's the wrong year)
The World is not Enough - Christmas in Turkey
Out of Africa - Main Title
Titanic - Take her to sea, Mr. Murdoch
    Casper - Casper's Lullaby
The 13th Warrior - A Useful Servant (OK, nobody saw this
Forrest Gump - I'm Forrest, Forrest Gump
Back to the Future - Overture
    The Godfather - Finale
    Jurassic Park - Theme
Anna and the King - The Execution
The Mission - on Earth as it is in Heaven (cliched, I know)

Just a few off the top of my head. But the general idea is hummable, sweeping themes that you notice when hearing the films.

NP - Godzilla clips - Arnold

Every single one of those are great another few goodies are the following.
    Independence Day (End credits)
Legends of the fall (Death of Samuel)
The Patriot (The Death of Thomas)
And Mighty Joe young (End credits)
Those are all... well not all, but some of my favorites that would go well on your compilation.

It's good to see Casper's Lullaby got mentioned, my god what a beautiful piece! I have to say it's one of my favorite themes of
    all time.

Here's a few of mine. Sorry if they were already mentioned but I just kind of skimmed most of the replies.

    Edward Scissorhands--The Grand Finale, Storytime.

Batman--The Batman Theme, Decent into Mystery and The Finale.

Bravheart--For Love of a Princess, End Credits.

    Dragonheart--Finale

And since I mentioned Descent into mystery: you can't go wrong with a little O Fortuna. way too many to name but those are what's on the playlist right now

    first post whoo hoo!

MWRuger!! Where the hellmouth have you been! We miss you at FSM!

Okay, now onto your topic :-) And what a great idea for a Christmas gift, BTW.

You've had a lotta great suggestions. It's hard to say what will blow people away, sometimes sheer power, sometimes sheer beauty. Since you've had a lot of "sheer power" suggestions, here's two for sheer beauty, both from The Mission (Morricone:

    The Falls
    Gabriel's Oboe

Mostly not. These are people who haven't really thought about music in years or are deep into classical/Jazz/etc....

MWR--To repeat myself, if they are into Jazz & Classical, you should woo them with film music that is similar to what they know so it's not such a big stretch, sneaking in a few things along the way. Overtures, waltzes, marches, fugues, etc. Memory waltz from Snows of Kilimanjaro. A forementioned Korngold. etc.
