Goldsmith(114), Rozsa(27), Williams(36), Newman(27), Howard(27), Poledouris(25), Waxman(18), Korngold(17), Steiner(12), North(12), Bernstein(20), Herrmann(27), Edelman(14). Also like 25 others including McKenzie, Safan, Barry, Mancini, Salter, Skinner.
Really interested in the MMM no. 3 Cd right now with Creature. Next on the list.
Mostly I collect the composers I am most interested in but any score I like I buy. 1929-present good film scores by anyone.
Really interested in Newman CDs that will come out also. Like Westerner and some of Tiomkin's and Waxman's Objective Burma, just out.
Joan Hue and Lou Goldberg have many of same interests I do on this board and others too like Jeron.
Also a big John Scott, Moross, Friedhofer, Kaper, Addison fan.
I buy around 5-7 a month and trade for stuff.
Started collecting in 1962. Really got serious with Goldsmith and Rozsa and Newman in 1979. Best, JW.posted 11-25-2000 01:04 PM PT (US)

Nobody. I hate you all.

Jeron---though he fails to share my love of scores written by Harold Faltermeyer
PeterK---especially with "real music"
Henry Rocco, um,
Howard L---made me love the Matinee score
Who else? Actually, took DjC's advice and picked up Blue Man Group and loved it (percussive as hell!), oh, forgot Mom! Thanks for bein' you, Joan! Brad, oh Brad! Joel! Mike! Al! Holy hell, I forgot JJH! You da man! Anyway, you guys are cool, you know that.
5. Have you seen the films of most of your scores? Do you plan too?
I've seen 100% of the films that I've seen.6. Which 3 scores are you most looking forward to in the next 2 years?
Next two years? Looking forward to Chris Young's The Gift, I guess the next Star Wars score, whatever John Ottman's doing, Shore's Lord Of The Rings. Hard question!Well, anyway, thanks for liking good music!
ShaunP.S. A guy came into the store today, asked for the soundtracks to Gladiator and X-Men. I suggested that if he liked both of those, The 13th Warrior was the score I wanted Gladiator to be and that I (obviously) highly recommended it. I also gave him a copy of a Goldsmith comp I made, so that from now on, he was indebted to The Wall and had to make all of his soundtrack purchases there. Anyway, long story short, he ended up buying Gladiator, X-Men, AND The 13th Warrior. Gettin' the good name of Goldsmith out to the people. Oh, hey Mark---sold a Raiders soundtrack today, too!

1. Roughly how many soundtrack CDs do you own?Total about 300, mostly classical and film music. Film music probably clocks in at around 200.
2. Which composer takes up most of your collection?
Williams, then Goldsmith (although Goldsmith might be very close now, it's difficult to count them at the moment because there are now too many CDs to fit on the shelf)
3. Which composer are you most interested in collecting at the moment?
Goldsmith, although I'm just calming down again.
I've gotten so many new CDs in the last few months that I generally try to cut down on CD purchases and catch up with listening.4. Which other board member do you think has tastes most similar to yours?
Hard to say. Many people here share favourites, but virtually everybody has other favourites I've never heard.
5. Have you seen the films of most of your scores? Do you plan too?
No, many of my scores were bought unheard. I usually try to see the film for a score if possible, because I think that it enhances my understanding of the music (of the music separated from the movie, not as plain film music, Thor
)6. Which 3 scores are you most looking forward to in the next 2 years?
Harry Potter (might be Williams' next [i]Hook or Jurassic Park), The Lord of the Rings, Episode 2 (whatever Goldsmith does, of course, too. Will Matrix 2 be scored by Don Davis? Then it should also be very exciting).

Hello,
What a wonderfull thread this is. I've enjoyed reading all these answers. They won't solve any of lifes problems, but they are interesting none-the-less.
I figured since I am a newbie (to this forum, not the soundtrack circuit) that I should grace your presence with my answers!!!

So, heeereee they go.
1. Roughly how many soundtrack CDs do you own?
750
2. Which composer takes up most of your collection?
There is a tie....
James Horner: 83
John Williams: 83
Second up; Jerry Goldsmith: 61
Third; Hans Zimmer: 48
Fourth; Danny Elfman: 33 (just about everything that has been released)3. Which composer are you most interested in collecting at the moment?
It varies from day to day. Recently it has been Thomas Newman, but today browsing through some Williams sites and listening to some old cd's I decided that I am gonna focus on getting more Williams.
4. Which other board member do you think has tastes most similar to yours?
I'm too new here. Don't know anyone yet. Although some names look familiar from the old, and obsolete rec.music.movies days!
5. Have you seen the films of most of your scores? Do you plan too?
The big movies, yes. The small independant movies, yes. "The Rapture" and "Mutant"... NO. Don't plan on it either!

6. Which 3 scores are you most looking forward to in the next 2 years?
Episode II, Hannibal, A.I
I guess thats it. I could go on and on and on about what scores I'm looking forward to, but I won't bore you with that!!

1. Roughly how many soundtrack CDs do you own?Roughly 437, counting double sets as one.
2. Which composer takes up most of your collection?
Jerry, of course. (My, but he's popular here. Almost everyone owns the most of his stuff...)
3. Which composer are you most interested in collecting at the moment?
Joe Hisaishi. If you're not looking into him, you should be!
4. Which other board member do you think has tastes most similar to yours?
Gee... that's tough. Just about everyone here shares my tastes in some ways, but doesn't in others.
5. Have you seen the films of most of your scores? Do you plan too?
No, and no. I've seen maybe half the films for scores I have, and I have no plans to look into the other half. The number of films I've seen for scores I have is sure to go up, though, do to my new policy of not buying scores on a chance (unless it's a VERY good chance, like anything Poledouris or Hisaishi).
6. Which 3 scores are you most looking forward to in the next 2 years?
Only three??
Whoa... I guess LOTR, Pearl Harbor, and JP3. Runners up: Final Fantasy, Vertical Limit, Along Came A Spider, anything Williams, anything Goldsmith, anything JNH, etc., etc.NP: Toy Soldiers, Folk

You guys are incredible!
I had no idea when I stumbled across this board that you guys were such experts!
I hesitate to put my answers up.I only own about 5 or 6 soundtracks
(let's see... Driving Miss Daisy, Cinema Paradiso, Gladiator, Mission Impossible, ummm...) Pathetic! (Classical music doesn't count, d'oh!)Since I don't know the answers to the other questions, I will just say a couple things, since I am new.
I am a senior in high school in California, and I have only recently gotten interested in film scores. Coming to this board was great, because you guys are all so knowledgeable and frank and ready to give recommendations right away! Before coming here I had no idea which direction to turn! I only wish that I could afford to go to the store and buy every single CD you have all recommended...
So, thank you all very much for answering the survey, making me extremely jealous, and providing me with an endless stream of new products to consume--albeit that many of them I won't hear for a while.
sorry to stray from the survey.

I own about 700-750 film music CDs and CDRs, about 700 film music LPs, and 800 cassettes of film music. I have rock, jazz, classical, etc. but they are definately in the minority.Because some guys are more prolific than others, the guy with the most CDs on the rack, isn't necessarily the guy I hold in the highest esteem. For sheer numbers, it's got to be Goldsmith, possibly Morricone, Herrmann, or Rozsa.
The composer whose works I'm most interested in getting into my collection right now is Akira Ifukube.
There are a lot of guys here who share my tastes or part of them--John Winfrey, Graham Watt, Gunther K, Rang, Rocco, various Marks past and present, the Anime guys, etc. But I've been vocal against Horner and the Media Ventures crew (both have done good stuff though) if you ask whose tastes I don't share.
In a majority of the cases, I have seen the films of scores I own, even own the films on VHS. There are some pretty obscure films I've seen, but there are even more obscure films, especially foreign ones, which I have scores to but cannot see even if I wanted to.
There are promised CDs I want, but nothing specific I'm looking forward to in new film scores--I follow my favorites, but maybe someone new will surprise me.

Question to those with >1000 CDsI sometimes worry that with all my new CDs coming in, I'm only giving the new ones a few quick listens before putting them proudly on the shelf. When I had only a handful I knew each score off by heart and could anticipate every note and fanfare.
Does having so many CDs mean that you don't give them enough listening time to get to know them well?
Or have they been collected over many years?
I've promised not to buy any more until 2001 (except Phantom Menace Ultimate) so as to sit down and appreciate some CDs I got this year and which I only heard sparingly. So far I've kept this promise since early November - but it's been tough

1) I have just under 200 CD's2) Mr. Goldsmith takes up most space (around a quarter, with 47). Other than that, it's fairly well spread out, next up is Elfman with 11, Beltrami with 10, & Williams with 9.
3) Hard to choose just one, but I'm quite keen on finding more by Zbigniew Preisner, John Scott, & Pino Donaggio at the moment.
4) Not really sure. A few people (I won't mention names, to avoid offending those I don't mention) like fairly similar things to me, but also like stuff I don't, or dislike stuff I like. Ah well.
5) I've probably only seen around half of the films. Some I'd really like to see, others I'm quite happy with just having the CD (Rambo 3 springs to mind with this).

When I get to know it well, I pick the tracks I want and I copy them on tape.
After that, I tend to listen mostly to the tape. I'd only listen to the full CD if I'm planning a long stretch of work (for example a five hour math assignment).

Interesting survey here Camillu...
My answers1. A lot! (but not as many as some of you on these boards have)

2. Unlike the majority, Goldsmith isn't my favorite film composer BUT I have more of his scores than anyone else's, probably 80 or 90! (I haven't counted)
3.Mychael Danna and Christopher Gordon are really ringing my bell at the moment, looking forward to hearing more from these two!
4. NONE OF YA! (only joking), I go along with the above people who don't want to mention names, I'm pretty sure that we ALL share some aspects of each other's taste, some more than other's etc....but this is a film music board for cripes sake!!
5. Probably the majority of them.
6. I'm not in any hurry...when they come out they come out!,In the mean time there's plenty of films and music available right now!

1. A little over 1400 soundtrack or score cds.2. My first soundtracks were Goldsmith and Barry and they still dominate. About 120 Goldsmiths, 59 Barrys, 40 Horners, 27 Elfmans and Williams, 18 Edelman and Schifrins.
3. Don't really focus on specific composers, but I've been picking up a lot of Roy Budd lately. Among newer composers, I'd like to see more from Debbie Wiseman and Christophe Beck.
4. My taste is somewhat eclectic, but Jeron might be closest. I'm not as fond of John Williams or the Media Ventures bunch as many here are. They just don't connect with me on an emotional level.
5. I very rarely see the films in the theater, but catch a lot on cable. Those of you that are married can probably relate to the current obsession with crude language making most current films unacceptable to my spouse (we actually have a reviewer that counts the profanities).
6. Bond 20, Trek 10, and Proof of Life

Camillu, I live, eat, drink, sleep and breathe music (not just film music, either). I make time in the day to listen to music (I commute a lot so you can imagine how many MiniDiscs I walk around with... an entire backpack full).I used to do a rotation thing with them, but I have decided that It's not worth it. Everything gets listened to, but the frequency varies.
I also do a lot of excerpting and mixing, so the plethora of available material makes for great variety.

Hey Solarwnz--Try starting your own Hello to the Board post so everyone gets to know you.A suggestion to all the people out there trying to get Steiner scores into their collection (but you have to have a tape deck):
Contact the Max Steiner society at hometown.aol.com/steinerlib/ they have cheap cassettes of tons of Steiner scores, straight off the discs that Steiner collected of his own sessions (why they never went over to CD...but they never did).
Jezebel, The Searchers, Sgt. York, The Letter, Dark Victory, Casablanca, Now Voyager, Don Juan, Helen of Troy, Since You Went Away, The Woman in White, The Fountainhead, Operation Pacific, etc. etc.
