Barry Gray was among the first musical voices I encountered on my road to film music appreciaton. Long before I could pinpoint the sound of Bernard Herrmann , Jerry Goldsmith or John Williams I could instantly spot the distinctive character of Mr. Gray's music.

The early Supermarionation shows of Gerry Anderson were mainstays of my childhood. I would regularly watch Stingray, Supercar and Fireball XL5. All were graced with Barry Gray's wonderful music. Later, when Anderson turned his efforts toward live action in things like Doppleganger (which I saw for the first time on network TV sometimes in the arly 70s) UFO and Space:1999, Barry Gray was there. In fact it was with heartbreak that I immediately noticed the absense of Gray's music in the second season of 1999. The fact for me was that Gray's music was an integral component of any Anderson production. Why, my exposure to him was entirely through the Anderson shows.

Barry Gray passed some years ago and I have not encountered another musician who has dupilicated his very unique manner. His music was at once British in tone (I regrettably cannot define what that British sound is... it just had that character to me) with a strangley oriental architecture at times. He was classically trained yet was a pioneer in the use of electronic music and, as would surely please DANIEL2, readily made use of contemporary elements in his compositions.

Barry Gray is rarely mentioned in these circles most likely because few know of his work but also perhaps because of the very British nature of his music. Nevertheless he remains for me an unsung hero of film music. Indeed he was considered a national treasure in his native England during his lifetime.

I encourage all my fellows to seek out his work if given the chance. And for those who have been influenced by the music of Barry Gray please add your thoughts to this thread. Mr. Gray would surely be pleased.

Long ago, over at the Film Score Monthly message board, I authored a thread dedicated to Barry Gray.
As a child, I was first exposed to his music when I watched Supercar, and Fireball XL-5.
As a teenager, I saw Journey To The Far Side Of The Sun (Doppelganger) in the movie theatre, and then came Space:1999.
    Barry Gray was always there.
His music has made an indelible impression on me!

Thanks for the thoughts Chris. You must know that the late Guy McKone was a huge Gray fan. Thanks to him I now have recordings of some very coveted Gray soundtracks including TBirds are Go! and the Doppelganger Suite performed by the Royal Philharmonic. It makes me all misty to listen to them now.

Hal--Barry Gray is great. Somewhere Timmer (I think) called Thunderbirds the ultimate march. As bad as it sounds, I'll find myself singing Stingray in the shower. I love it!UFO, Space: 1999, Joe 90, Captain Scarlet, Journey to the Far Side of the Sun. Life would be less without this stuff.

I didn't think that I would EVER see anyone else talk about one of my "gateway" composers! By "gateway", I mean the exact same thing that HAL 2000 mentioned up at the top: Barry Gray was one of the very first composers whose work - or "sound" - I recognized, and whose name I memorized. HAL, I noticed because of the very same Gerry Anderson shows. One of my VERY EARLIEST memories connected with this hobby is of sitting in front of the TV on a Saturday night with my cassette recorder, trying to get a really good "take" on the theme to SPACE: 1999! Like you, I immediately noticed the difference in the opening credit music for Year Two of that show. One of the best elements of Year One was its music, which was more often than not very epic in feel; this lent the whole series a cinematic feel that belied its TV origin. I STILL get goosebumps when I think about those "descending" string notes, while on the screen, an Eagle Transporter plummets toward the lunar surface; all of this just before the far-out guitar & synth interlude over the montage from "This Episode".....

BTW, SPACE: 1999 is coming to DVD on January 30th. You can pre-order the first two sets (packaged in the same manner as the DVD release of THE AVENGERS series - more great music!) from Amazon.com. The THUNDERBIRDS are set to launch on DVD later in 2001....

Yup - I am a Gerry Anderson nut. HAL (and Chris, and anyone else), I have the definitive SPACE: 1999 CD music releases, thanks to a friend I met at the site OnLine Alpha. Both (Year One and Year Two) are two-disc sets with a couple of hours of music on 'em. They were produced and retailed through a UK-based organization called FANDERSON, which supports all of the Gerry Anderson shows. I will only be too happy to make copies for you, if you like, as they are now OOP and quite pricey through eBay. E-mail me & let me know! This is an open offer, and not for money - these things were on my own personal Grail List for a long time, so I'll be happy to share with another True Believer. Shall I go ahead and plan to make you some, Chris?

I am also hunting down some UFO scoring. I'll let you know if I bag anything.

Thanks for mentioning this underappreciated composer. Folks, this guy took shows starring PUPPETS - on syndicated TV! - and breathed life into them. Epic music made those shows so much more resonant....

Great to see so much interest in Barry's music. I have all the Fanderson CDs - it's the only reason I joined them, and it's well worth it, the music sounds wonderful and the packaging is a labour of love. I understand Fanderson would like to put out tons of Thunderbirds music but there are some problems, maybe legal. Along with TB, my favourite Barry Gray music is for UFO, a funky 70s departure from his usual style.

You can download about 14 MP3s of UFO music from: http://ufo.simplenet.com/music/index.html

Other Barry Gray music can be downloaded at: http://ufo.simplenet.com/barry/index.html

There are links on both sites to a couple more places where a handful of BG cues can be found on MP3. Enjoy!

I came over alol nostalgic reading the above replies, The sound of Barry Gray in Gerry Anderson's shows was as indelibly linked as John Barry is to James Bond, Gray's influence on my early musical taste is enormous and like Hal I too was aware of his music long before any other composer.

Mark H, you may already be aware that the original theme and end titles to UFO is available on an album called This Is...Cult Fiction Royale though strangely it starts with the closing credits and then the theme?!, Also included on this album is originals from Fireball XL5, Stingray and Supercar. The sound quality on some of the sources leaves something to be desired.

    That British sound...mmmm?
As defined by the likes of....
    Laurie Johnson,Ron Goodwin,Edwin Astley,John Scott,Ron Grainer,John Barry and of coarse Barry Gray

I wish Guy McKone were still here!

....On the subject of Anderson where's Brian Mellies?

THANKS, Stephen and Timmer! I will definitely check out the sources you suggested.

As to UFO: for my money, that opening theme was as good as any he did. Very propulsive & funky.

Stephen, is there a THUNDERBIRDS CD available; and if so, is it still in print? I haven't seen one second of the show in about a quarter of a century - but I still recall some terrific music from an episode involving a Concorde-ish jet landing on some little flat-bed cars (!), and some sort of drill-vehicle in a volcano.....

On the Thunderbirds Are Go album there is the Zero X theme but I don't think this is the music your on about Mark, it was a really exciting bongo's and brass kinda music for the rescue of the 'Concord'ish' airliner. So much good music in this show, if only they could release it. i'll add my tuppence to Mark's and ask Stephen about UFO music, this also had some great stuff in it!

P.S. before anyone mention's it, yes I know Ron Grainer was Australian, but he resided here in Britain for a long time

I think all of us guys must have shared our childhoods on exact replica planets or something (only in reverse like Far Side of the Sun ) All the experiences/memories etc of Barry Gray's great music, mentioned above, I share with you all! Gray's music was amazingly "cinematic" and epic in scale considering he was essentially writing music for a children's "puppet show". He had a flare for writing memorable melodies/themes to all the shows he scored and just like any great composer he had his unique "sound" stamped on each piece that was unmistakable (the true sign of genius IMHO). Whatever happened to him? Is he still alive etc? Methinks its time for a visit to the IMD to do some research! Just read he died in 1984! Sad he's gone! I found this profile for him on my travels. http://superm.bart.nl/gray_bio.html

Mark, as Timmer mentions there is the THUNDERBIRDS ARE GO CD, but this is notoriously missing that bongo-driven jeopardy music we all know and love. For me the best part of that CD is the electronic-flavoured stuff on "Alan's Dream" and "Martian Mystery" - very atmospheric, and as evocative of the show as the more familiar march theme. The CD is padded out with 4 tracks by the pop group The Shadows - amusing to hear Hank Marvin's guitar belting out the TB and Zero X themes, but the absence of any meaty Barry Gray cues makes the CD a bit frustrating to listen to.

Another CD featuring TB music is "FAB: Music From The TV Shows By Barry Gray" (Silva Screen, FilmCD124). It's not technically a Barry Gray CD - it's a re-recording by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (!) and though in some ways it's better than "TB Are Go" it also has its fair share of frustrating moments (liberties taken with tempos and orchestration) and tends to overdose on the march theme. It does have some action stuff on it, though, and at one point tries out that familiar bongo-driven thing - but dubs the bongos in way too low! Boo!

I'm still holding out hope that Fanderson will overcome whatever obstacles they're facing and give us all what we want - an honest-to-God genuine Thunderbirds CD, maybe even a double CD like their amazing Space:1999 release ... wow, that'd be something. If I hear anything about a TB release from them I'll be sure to post it on this board.

If you don't have the time to download that UFO stuff I can do a cassette copy for you. I have some stuff from Thunderbirds and Doppelganger that they've since removed from their site for some strange reason.

Do any of our British friends have those THUNDERBIRDS DVD's? I saw them at Amazon.uk the other day.....

Can't wait till they release this stuff here in the States!

I'm another one who sat in front of the TV with a tape recorder for UFO and Space 1999. These days, Napster has filled in a lot of gaps for me.

And I too thought there was a "British sound," although I only know about Gray, Laurie Johnson, and Ron Grainer.

There's one thing I would really, really like: Almost every Year 1 episode of Space 1999 ended with a brief cue that seemed to say "Respect the profound mysteries of the universe," or musical notes to that effect.

Does anyone have an mp3 of that?

I think several of us had the same experience with Barry Gray/Gerry Anderson. I also grew up watching Fireball XL5 and Stingray. I still can remember the Stingray theme.

I saw Journey to the Far Side of the Sun (Doppelganger) at the drive-in when I was a kid. I remember the next day as I was raking grass looking up in the sky the and thinking there's another kid out there just like me, also raking grass, only in the opposite direction.

Any chance we'll ever see Gray's great score to Journey?

ZapBrannigan, that cue you mention is on the Fanderson CD, (CD1 Track26) ... can't urge you enough to buy this, these guys need our support. In the meantime I guess I could try e-mailing you an MP3 of the cue. Would that work? Never tried e-mailing an MP3 before. Let me know if you want to try an experiment!

As for those wondering what FAB stands for ... I think it's generally understood it doesn't actually stand for anything, it's just a cool way of saying "OK" or "A-Firmative!" At the time the series first played, the Beatles were always being referred to as the Fab Four, so the word Fab was pretty fashionable. It's an Austin Powers kinda thing - "Fab, baby!"

I love Barry Gray's music. Not only is it exciting and well crafted, but also, importantly it has the ability to emotionally move the listener, something that better know composers often fail to do. The "Thunderbird" release is an excellent mix of the different styles that Gray was a master in. He was equally skilled in whatever he wrote, from a long lasting memorable theme, to a full blown action cue, creepy electronic piece, to a Parisienne Song or a 60's Electric Guitar
instrumental to even a Piano Lounge piece and some avant garde jazz. The man had it all and is one of the true Genius composers in my humble opinion. I admit that I still get a lump in my throat whenever I hear the song "Aqua Marina"....yes I know its sad, but hey I'm not proud. It just has an innocent nostalgic beauty to it, a beauty that is very rarely captured in todays more cynical age. Or am I just seeing it through the veil of nostalgia?

Graham, thanks for the concern. I did die, but came back from the grave to haunt everyone again!! No, seriously, I have been ill, I had a viral infection for a few months in my inner ear(Meniere's disease) which affected my balance and I had a vertigo attack at work where the room span around. Not very nice! Because of this I have been keeping away from the computer screen as much as I can because it can bring on dizziness sometimes when I scroll down the pages. There are other things as well that bring it on e.g. sitting on loose furniture, loud music, subliminal editing on TV etc.
Does anyone else suffer from this condition? Even though I feel I am out of the infection, I still feel that the condition is just lying dormant, waiting to come out again. Hope I'm wrong. Add to this that I had an onsurge of eye floaters last year which are in my vision everyday and its not been a great 6 months. It is a bit depressing and has made me look more inwardly at myself. I have become more introverted these days and I seem to view the world as if it were a dream and I was seperate from it. Maybe, Its just that I'm getting older and having a mid-life crisis!!! Sorry to sound so depressed.
I have been frequenting the board from time to time but I visit other boards more these days e.g. britishhorrorfilms.co.uk
I dont buy many film scores but the scores I do tend to buy are more retro, e.g Barry Gray. I dont buy many, if any modern scores as I dont go to the cinema much and dont seem to keep up with the latest Box Office.
As you mentioned Graham, "Journey to the Far Side of the Sun" (AKA Doppelganger) has a lovely, haunting score which I have as a 15 minute suite. Is that an Ondes Martenot being used with its purety of sound? It sounds like a mellow theremin.

Just want to second Timmer's sentiments, Gae. Hope things get better for you. By the way, what album is that 15-min suite of DOPPELGANGER on? And has anyone picked up the CAPTAIN SCARLET release yet?

    Meanwhile, look after yourself, Gae.

Thanks for the kind words Timmer and Graham. It's much appreciated.
Graham, I dont know what the "Doppelganger" suite is off as it was added on the end of CD-R that I recently traded with someone. I'll do you a copy of it if you want.
    Take care

Yeah I've got that Cap Scarlet CD...as if I wouldn't have

It's got the opening title narration, both versions of the end titles...y'know the ones, semi vocal and the other one sung by The Spectrum, some alternate stuff...in fact it's got bloody loads of stuff on it.

I'd be more than willing to help you out if your having trouble getting hold of it Graham?!

DOPPELGANGER...I haven't got the LP to hand right now but if memory serves correct it was from Filmharmonic 79 which Barry Gray conducted at (...and I damn well missed it!), I believe the album also contained music by Elmer Bernstein, I don't know if this has ever been released on CD.

NP : I've influenced myself into playing Captain Scarlet
