It may be a little early, but I suppose that at least 2 to 3 out of 5 of the nominees for Best Original Score is already out.My guess:
1. The Patriot - John Williams
2. Dinosaur - JNH (Not really my cup of tea, but Disney usually gets nominated in this category)
3. Gladiator(?) - Hans Zimmer (A wild guess, if it is being nominated for other categories e.g. Best Sound, Best Picture?)
4. Road to El Dorado - Zimmer could get another nomination (TTRL and PoE)Not quite a good year for scores, and didn't get many of the titles for this year personnally, but just my guess.

This is going to come as a shock to you, so sit down. No, really.(this is where I play Ford Thaxton)
Gladiator and The Road To El Dorado CANNOT be nominated, as the scores were credited to more than one composer (in the case of El Dorado, at least 3, and in the case of Gladiator, the recount is already in progress). You can thank David Byrne and R. (won't even try it) Sakamoto for that.
My guesses?
Without even hearing it, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon will be nominated (and will probably win) because it was written by a composer who doesn't write many film scores and is from a foreign land.
If the Academy could look past crap films, Bless The Child would be a great choice for a nomination. Well, maybe Chris Young will get one for The Gift. That would be cool.

I'd like to see Goldsmith nominated for Hollow Man, he too would deserve it. But I guess we won't see this happen.
NP: Under Fire (Jerry Goldsmith)

About the multiple composer thing - wasn't The Insider nominated for some award (or does the Golden Globe think differently)
I was hoping Gladiator would get nominated, which I thought possible judging by the films success.I guess that rules out my main secret nomination hope - Chicken Run.
Ah well -
The Patriot
Dinosaur
Legend of Bagger Vance
2 out of these 3:
Mission to Mars (maybe?)
U-571
X-MenI'm going by those released so far that i've heard - so I'm missing out on all the late oscar-tailored films that are coming out now.

When are the next Oscar's, anyway?Too bad that Harry Potter isn't coming out in time; Williams being nominated is more or less certain, but while I like The Patriot, it's not that great. I have a feeling that Potter could become his next Hook/Jurassic Park, and if this turns out to be true, it would deserve a nomination much more than Patriot.
Of course, the academy might try to be "serious" and choose Patriot, anyway...

NP: Home Alone 2 (John Williams) - I'm still annoyed that from the first score, Somewhere in my Memory was nominated for best song; it's nice but the true masterpiece from both scores is Star of Bethlehem.
Ok, ranting finished.

NP (when editing the message): Voodoo Lounge (The Rolling Stones)

Ford was kind enough to send me an email regarding this issue. He wrote something to the effect of this:You'd discover they (sic) scores written by more then (sic) one composer can be nominated.
Remember this:
Good Research keeps me from making a fool of myself.
READ IT
LEARN IT
REMEMBER IT.
The Golden Globes nominate whatever they want, hence the Philip Glass/Burkhard Dallwitz win for Truman, but don't you guys remember every year we go through this? I'll do a search and see what I can find.
Under the rules of eligibility for Best Original Score, I found this:
Only the principal composer(s) or song writer(s) responsible for the conception and execution of the work as a whole shall be eligible for an award. This expressly excludes from eligibility all of the following:f. scores assembled from the music of more than one composer.
Thanks,

I think John Williams has a good chance of winning this year. But I think either Portman or Howard will actually win. The winner is always the one I least suspect. I know my favorite composer, Mr. Goldsmith, will never win a Oscar again. I do think that his score Hollow Man made those impressive visual effects even more impressive.[Message edited by Aaron R. I'm guessing Tiger and Dragon and Crouching and Hidden or whatever the title is will probably get nominated. As might
-> Bagger Vance
-> The Yards
-> the next from Rachel Portman available on Sony Classical, I forgot its name.
-> It's a major long shot, but Hollow Man might be nominated. Oscar people often don't care about how stuff sounds on CD, they want it to go with the movie, and this one certainly does. On the other hand, it is Jerry Goldsmith, and they nominate him sometimes, but never give him anything.
-> Dino? Probably. It's symphonic. Fits the movie. Has the Disney seal of approval on it.On the other hand, the major nomination period is about to begin. There are still a few oscar movies coming till christmas.
In any case, whoever wins, will be the one who least deserves it. But then again, there's nothing new about that. It's the way it's been for the past 7 or so years.

If the Oscar was something to be taken seriously, Morricone's MISSION TO MARS would win easily. But since we all know what the Oscar is there for, probably will win this year the next movie with SHAKESPEARE in the title or Gladiator, because it was a pretentious "art" movie and make lots of money.

-Unbreakable
-The Yards
-The Patriot (I really hope this doesn't get nominated!)
-The Grinch
-The Legend of Bagger Vance
-Dinosaur
-Pay It ForwardNP: Battle Beyond the Stars - James Horner ***/*****

Well, so far my top five looks like this:
Patriot - the Williams
Perfect Storm - (come on the music was the best thing going for this movie)
Dinosaur - you gotta have a Disney in there
Mission to Mars - Ennio (this may not have been a great movie but it IS a great score)
for the fifth one I would have to say:
Unbreakable by James Newton Howard (an absolute perfect fit to this movie)
