I just got this one, and gosh did I not realize what I was in for. This isn't a very easy score to get through... it meanders between themes at a very slow pace, though the action cues and love theme help keep it all glued together. The ethnic source music and cool waltz Scott composed make this a fun, varied listen. An underlying sense of danger and mystery keeps the listener on his toes. It certainly ends up being a rewarding experience at the album's conclusion, as the last two cues (Defeat of the Decievers and End Credits) sum up everything that John Scott was hinting at throughout the entirety of the score. I fell in love with this as I listened to those two tracks unfold. Definitely a fine effort on Mr. Scott's behalf. Can anyone comment?
PS - Mike Joffe, thanks for recommending this.

One of Mr. Scott's best, IMHO. Unfortunately this great, old-fashioned, sometimes brutal score was completely emasculated in the final print of the movie. Pretty much all of the most hard-edged action music was dropped in favor of either silence or randomly tapping ethnic drums. Among those conspicuously absent are (forgive me on my memory, but I'm not anywhere near the CD) the Prolgue, Massacre of the Nabob's Company, Invocation to Kali, Forest Murders, William Kills, and just about any instance where you hear that upward rush of winds and strings signifying an attack by a Thugee. Shame on whoever made this decision. If you ever get a chance to watch the movie (it sucks) sync up the CD. It's one of those experiences that leaves you shaking your head and saying, "WHAT were they THINKING??!?!?!? Bravo, John Scott! BTW, his new release of SHERGAR is beautiful. Highly recommended.

Thats a coincidence Jeron cos' "The Deceivers" is the only John Scott score Ive got also and I second your thoughts. I think hes a very colourful orchestrater and judging from the love theme capable of writing lovely melodies. I keep saying to myself that I'll have to buy more of his music. I think what keeps holding me back is that he always seems to score films I've either never seen or are sub-standard movies. I caught one of these films recently and it was pretty awful...cant remember the title but it was a Shogun/martial arts film starring David Essex of all people. I half expected him to burst out singing!! The score sounded "too" good for the movie and this is probably true of John Scott's scores generally. Being a big fan of older composers such as Miklos Rozsa etc, Scott's style seems to come from that school of composers...i.e. there are moments in "The Deceivers" similar in effect to Rozsa's "Sinbad" and "Arabian" music, not just in the ethnicity of the music but in the orchestration and colour of it. Any other Scott recommendations would be appreciated! Gae NP Last of the Mohicans

KING KONG LIVES, for God's sake! KING KONG LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also his LIONHEART if you can find it. I believe the current boot of KONG also includes bits from his excellent action score SHOOT TO KILL (1988).As for THE DECEIVERS, it's a difficult listen in parts, but the first two cues in particular are among my favorite things he's done.
Where the hell is PEOPLE THAT TIME FORGOT?
