okay, okay. I finally got to hear The Mephisto Waltz. Shaun, you were right. This is THE freakiest score ever and perfect for next Halloween. The "danse macabre" that Goldsmith employs is a neat little tool, along with the violin writing.BUT
That muffled vocal, or whatever that thing is that appears from time to time, makes my skin crawl. It's truly unsettling.
It's a brilliant score!

Want to appreciate the brilliance of Goldsmith's score even more? How about this? That isn't even a vocal! But it's meant to acoustically mimic one.Every single note of the score is unsettling.

Right, this score IS "creepy as hell". I don't play it too often, though, it's one of those scores where I think I need to watch the movie.

I haven't seen the 1973 documentary THE SCORE, about film composers, but it supposedly includes a scene of Goldsmith recording THE MEPHISTO WALTZ and listening to the playback; the writer who saw the film observed that the music "scared the hell out of everybody, including the composer."
