okay, okay. I finally got to hear The Mephisto Waltz. Shaun, you were right. This is THE freakiest score ever and perfect for next Halloween. The "danse macabre" that Goldsmith employs is a neat little tool, along with the violin writing.

    BUT
That muffled vocal, or whatever that thing is that appears from time to time, makes my skin crawl. It's truly unsettling.

    It's a brilliant score!

NP -- not the Mephisto Waltz...

Want to appreciate the brilliance of Goldsmith's score even more? How about this? That isn't even a vocal! But it's meant to acoustically mimic one.

Every single note of the score is unsettling.

Right, this score IS "creepy as hell". I don't play it too often, though, it's one of those scores where I think I need to watch the movie.

I haven't seen the 1973 documentary THE SCORE, about film composers, but it supposedly includes a scene of Goldsmith recording THE MEPHISTO WALTZ and listening to the playback; the writer who saw the film observed that the music "scared the hell out of everybody, including the composer."
