THE DUELISTS / RIDDLE OF THE SANDS music by HOWARD BLAKE

Here for the first time ever are Howard Blake's two fantastic
orchestral scores on one CD: THE DUELLISTS & RIDDLE OF THE SANDS.

    THE DUELLISTS (1977)
To make his debut as a feature film director, Ridley Scott ("Alien,"
"Blade Runner," "Gladiator") chose to adapt Joseph Conrad's fact-based
story "The Duel." Produced by David Puttnam, the film is set during the
grand, sweeping Napoleonic age. THE DUELLISTS is the story of an officer
in the French army who insults another officer and sets off a life-long
feud. The two officers, D'Hubert (Keith Carradine) and Feraud (Harvey
Keitel), cross swords time and time again in an attempt to achieve
justice and preserve their honor over a 20 year period. Howard Blake's
association with Scott's commercial work made him the first and only
choice to score the director's visually stunning epic. Blake composed
the music for the film in three distinct categories: music authentic to
the period, a full-bodied symphony to underscore the romantic drama, and
an almost surreal avant garde accompaniment to the duels themselves.
The picture won the Special Jury Prize at the 1977 Cannes Film Festival,
and the composer considers this "my finest film score ever." This is the
long awaited orchestral score that has never been available before.

    RIDDLE OF THE SANDS (1979)
Documentary filmmaker Tony Maylam ("Split Second") was so impressed
by Howard Blake's score for The Duellists that he chose the composer to
score his dramatic feature debut, an adaptation of Erskine Childers'
classic spy novel RIDDLE OF THE SANDS. The turn-of-the-century thriller
chronicles the adventures of two yachtsmen British yachtsmen (Michael
York and Simon MacCorkindale) stumble upon a German plot to invade the
east coast of England in a flotilla of specially designed barges. They
set out to thwart this terrible scheme, but must outwit not only the
cream of the German Navy, but the feared Kaiser Wilhelm himself..
Michael York and Jenny Agutter (in their second of several screen
pairings, the first being LOGAN'S RUN), Simon MacCorkindale and Alan
Badell star in this 1979 motion picture. Blake's score is comprised of
lyrical melodies for orchestra and choir, representing the story's
heroes, and Wagner-influenced compositions for the antagonists. This
wonderfully grand and sweeping orchestral and choral score has never
    before been available.

THE FILM MUSIC OF HOWARD BLAKE
Howard Blake ("Flash Gordon," "The Snowman") supervised the digital
remastering and editing of two of his personal favorite film scores, The
Duellists and The Riddle of the Sands. This 74 minute CD includes the
majority of both scores, as well as music composed for but not included
in The Duellists. The 12 page full color accompanying booklet includes
photos, an international poster gallery, song lyrics, liner notes by
directors Ridley Scott and Tony Maylam, and producer /actor Michael
York, along with comments on the scores by composer Blake and album
    producer Christopher Landry.
