That is to say music which seems to perfectly express cosmic or mysterious forces at work. I love this kind of stuff. Personally, I think Goldsmith is unmatched in this so there will be many references to his work but here are what I consider some of the best of the type:

    The Cloud - ST:TMP
    The Mutant - Total Recall
The Second Coming - The Final Conflict
    The Vortex - Supergirl
    almost anything from Poltergeist
The Abduction of Barry - CE3K
    The Mothership - CE3K
Map Room-Dawn - Raiders of the Lost Ark
    The Fortress of Solitude -Superman
    Ulrich's Death - Dragonslayer

    What am I missing?

    To The Stars - Dragonheart
The World Of The Dead - Princess Mononoke
Red Sea - The Prince Of Egypt
Journey To The Island - Jurassic Park
    Hook-Napped - Hook
    57th Street - The Devil's Advocate
No Words - Contact (Most of the rest of this score is good for this, too)

    NP: White Fang 2 Suite

I remember being fascinated by Philip Glass' score to Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time, but unfortunately, there is no release available.

    NP: Supergirl (Jerry Goldsmith)

A lot of music is great for "cosmic" experiences.

I lvoe astronomy, and I'm always taking my scores out when I observe. In fact, when we have guests at our observatory, I usually play E.T. or something along those lines. Last time I had Legend playing instead.

I think minimalism perfectly represents the vastness and void of space, that's why I picked the Glass score above. The beginning of Bruckner's 3rd symphony sounds very fitting, too. I think I remember a similar sound at the beginning of Richard Strauss' Aus Italien, but I haven't heard it in years (I got it from the library some days ago, but haven't played it yet).

I love the sound of Goldsmith´s Floating Office from STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE. Goldsmith has used this kind of music in other movies that have had a space scene, CONGO was one of them, I think.

Indeed. In fact, nearly the whole of ST:TMP has either a very graceful zero-g or very mysterious deep-space quality (Vulcan Shuttle). Goldsmith has mastered that floating/tumbling sense in many of his scores - Outland, Innerspace, The Secret of NIHM, The Shadow , Supergirl, P2:The Other Side, and most recently the underwater cue in 13th Warrior. that's why I think he's among the best at it.

Try Vince DiCola's score for "Transformers: The Movie"....very Cosmic 80's. Opening cue alone--a musical holocaust.

Oh...and "Tron" as well. Very otherworldly.

Goldsmith did indeed quote "Floating Office" in CONGO -- as did Basil Poledouris early into UNDER SIEGE 2. That particular style of "cosmic" music is such a cliche by now that even my father groaned over it when he saw the latter film: "Can't they think of something ELSE?"

I think "Everywhere" from Goldsmith's POWDER fits into this category somewhat.

David Bedford's classical piece 24 Hours of Sunset is a perfect vastness of space piece!

    ...and very minamalist too.

    What do you reckon JJ?

....How come no one's mentioned pieces from Horner's Brainstorm or KRULL?

NP : One Million Years BC - Mario Nacimbene, some of this is pretty cosmic too!

I reckon that you're right. what a great piece. more Bedford!

I would also say that an IMAX score called Cosmic Voyage written by one David Michael Frank does this pretty well in places, as in the first track.

NP -- Red Planet, rare for a CD to outshine what you hear in film, but this does it

There are several cues in Starship Troopers that are really cosmic-like. The names of which escape me at this moment.

The Summit cue of Into Thin Air (which I got today) is very "cosmic." It's also tragic, in a way. Into Thin Air is a good score, BTW. ****.

NP: Into Thin Air: Death On Everest, Holdridge

Totally agree with you here, John. Into Thin Air has some great action writing, also. Plenty of percussion.

I was going to see it, but I can't find anywhere with a copy for rent, so...
I also read the book, and judging from the tracks on the CD, they shortened it considerably. I think they just started the film about half way through, when they were starting to climb. Still, they may have done a good job; there was no way to put that whole book into a film. I'll see it if I ever get a chance. :\

NP: My Neighbor Totoro, Hisaishi (Gotta get more Hisaishi stuff! I actually like EVERY CD I got today, and I was buying most of them on recommendations only; usually, there'll be at least one dud, but not here!)

I borrowed the film on VHS tape from my father. I have yet to watch it, but I'll let you know about it when I do.

Well to keep it alive I'll add the main title from the Day The Earth Stood Still which I should have said in the first place.
