I liked Arnold's Last of the Dogmen, and was wondering if I should pick up this score by James Horner?

Are they similar, or drastically different?

Radically different. Horner's score for Thunderheart is one of his minimalist efforts, along the lines of Bopha or The Pelican Brief. The score doesn't really open up until the last two tracks. But I don't mean to discourage you. I like this score. It's chock full of atmosphere. A great disc to put on if you're doing some reading or writing.

    Right on, Mike. I agree.

While it's nothing like Dogmen, Thunderheart does have a lot to offer. As Mike said, it's chock full of atmosphere - and the theme is quite memorable, when it actually makes an appearance. I'll send you an mp3 sometime.

Thunderheart is one of James Horner's most inspired scores which worked exceedingly well in the movie. It consists, however, mostly of unmelodic electronic scoring, stabbing percussions, blended with elements of native American music and chants.
One of Horner's more intriguing efforts, and certainly something people should listen to before claiming all Horner ever does is crank out melodic syrup. Thunderheart is one of my favorite scores by this composer, however I can understand why this highly atmospheric CD may not be for everyone's taste.

I've played this twice (and that was when it came out), I hate it....and as some of you around here know I am NOT a Horner basher, it's just this score does nothing for me whatsoever, let us know what you think of it Alwin if you decide to purchase it!

Thanks for the help, folks! I'll be ordering it as soon as I clear out the titles at the top of my list. Is it in short supply, eg: should I get it NOW while I can?

He also reused the "theme" from Thunderheart as the "theme" from Ransom.
