I thought of this thread coz I got Anna and the King the other day and I was surprised to find one of the best themes (IMO) that I had heard in quite a while.

Everyone has their favourite themes and besides all the suspense music, underscore and action music, it's still great themes that make a score one of my favourites.

What are your favourite 10 themes and when on the CD are they heard best, in your opinion?

Here's my list, in no particular order -

Williams' rebel theme from The Empire Strikes Back
    Track ? Rebel Fleet/End Title - 0.59

    Edelman's main theme from Dragonheart
    Track 2. - To the Stars - 2.28

    Burwell's main theme from Fargo
    1. - Fargo, North Dakota - 1.35

    North's theme from Viva Zapata!
? - Gathering Forces - 0.38 (as on Eric Stern compilation)

    Williams' main theme from JFK
    1. Prologue - 1.24

Fenton's main theme from Anna and the King
    15. The Execution - 2.29

Morricone's main theme from The Legend of 1900
    2. The Legend of the Pianist - 3.51

    Horner's 'freedom' theme from Braveheart
    17. Freedom/The Execution/Bannockburn - 1.50

    Williams' flying theme from ET
    10. The Magic of Halloween - 1.49

    Rabin's main theme from Armageddon
    2. Harry and Grace Make peace - 1.09

    Honourable mentions -

    Dangerous Beauty
Venice Proud and Pretty - 1.28

    Watership Down
    Climbing the Down - 0.31

    Empire of the Sky
Cadillac of the Skies - 1.29

    Meet Joe Black
    That Next Place - 1.05

Wow, that was tough. I cringe when I think of what I had to leave out.

    See ya

Ok, Ok, so I posted a thread which is a hassle to reply to.

Well in the rules it says that all you need to do is mention your favourite themes. The track times etc, were the result of a half day with nothing to do.

p.s. Jeron - I'm joking. There's no need to reply saying why you didn't post and worrying that I got offended

    Dragonheart (Edelman)
    "To the Stars"
WHY? One of the best and most moving themes ever composed.

    Glory
    "An Epitaph To War"
One of the most moving scores in a film of all time...

    Gettysburg
    "Main Title"
K, this isn't the best score of all time, but when I first heard this theme, wow.

    The Thin Red Line
    "Journey to the Line"
Definately my favorite track/theme of all time, pure genius.

    1492:Conquest of Paradise
    "Conquest of Paradise"
    Vangelis at his best

    Backdraft
    "Fighting 17th"
No score could fit the movie better, this theme is wonderful.

    Jurassic Park
    "Journey to the Island"
Both themes in this track are incredible.

    Chariots of Fire
    "Main Titles"
Though this track has grown a little old on me, who can deny its brilliance?

    Star Wars
    "Every theme found within"
    Good god.

    Crimson Tide
    "Roll Tide"
    Action music at it's best.

God I could name so much more... these aren't neccesarily my top 1o, either... this was at a quick glance at my cd collection, so... =)

you're right, this is a touhg one, but I shall endeavor to attempt to try to answer it.

Emperor's Theme from ROTJ, in the last duel; you all know what I mean.

Main Title from The Minus Man, by Beltrami is now one of my favorites.

there's a theme in Fenton's Woodlanders score that is given a ravishing performance in the end credits. Unfortunately, this theme, or motif, is heard outright only 2 times on the CD, and is hinted in the body of the score.

Yoda's Theme, as heard in ROTJ, when he dies.

    ummmm...well, that's all I can think of.

    too much to sift through!

Sorry, Mark. I originally agreed that this was a tough topic, but it's also pretty int'resting, and very worth a go. I'm glad others have tried to, so...

DARTH VADER'S THEME - "Aboard the Executor" (Track 4 from the complete) ... it's the angriest rendition, I think, and the most individualistic of those which could still be considered "Marches" of this theme (so admittedly not as unique as his death scene, for instance).

GALACTICA THEME - "The Five Battlestars" (Track 4, Disc 1 of the 4CD set) ... the most majestic rendition.

MULAN - "Main Titles" Sorry, it really is the best version, and a criminal omission from the CDs.

QBVII LOVE THEME - "I Cannot See my Love" (TRACK 3). The theme starts at 1:42 into the track. It's at its most beautiful 2:26 in. I stop dead in my tracks when I hear it - and I don't know exactly why. It is amazingly farmiliar, or perhaps personal, as I'm sure I'd not heard it elsewhere before I had the CD. I don't associate it with movie love so much. It feels like blissful recollection, or the rememberance of a once wonderful thing, the pain of whose loss has been enveloped in the joy of the time remembered.

It's not played again on the CD, I don't think, so this would have to serve as the default best version of it, and as such is almost not worth pointing out, but I wanted to mention it anyway because this one melody persists in having such a hold on me.
