What do you guys think about the Underrated scores of the 90s over at the 'other' site?

Firstly, the list reminded me that I have never given 'Far and Away' a decent listen.

So off I go to find it.

I never realyl understood what was so "underrated" about them in teh first place.

they were all semi- to popular scores in the first place, or generally recognized as being such.

my list was much better ;-)

I have an underrated score or two for you, I bet for MOST of you anyway. Anything by John Williams is NOT underrated; that should be the first fast, hard rule when conjuring up these lists.

Try this one: Felicia's Journey, score by Mychael Danna. The last few minutes of score on this album are nearly some of the most beautiful I've heard in a whole year.

Another movie score that's a little underrated is Fearless. There are a few notes by Jarre in this film, but his are not what make this film and soundtrack album so near perfect. The use of music by modern classical composers like Penderecki and Gorecki, along with the textured sounds of the Kronos Quartet and Gypsy Kings, really make this thing standout. Gorecki's Symphony No. 3 with Dawn Upshaw's solo performance. My God.

That's all I have time for at the moment....

Isn't "underrated score" kind of redundant? (or perhaps "undervalued score"...)

that Gorecki symphony is now probably the widest played contemporary work. it got played on radio one day, an it spawned an international phenomenon. The Baltimore SO version that PeterK has is definitive.

the music is wrought with emotion and poignancy perhaps a bit too much?)

the first movemenbt is extremely complex, and I would wager it gave Gorecki nightmares back in the 70s when he wrote the thing.

Np -- Frankie Starlight, yet again

I agree wholeheartedly! In fact- I think most of the scores Danna has written in the last few years are underrated- Girl Interrupted, Ride with the Devil, 8MM, etc...
It's a real shame that Ride with the Devil (both the score and the movie) have been largely ignored by the film music community- it's a real gem.
