This is really annoying. Here I've seen this cd many times and never, ever considered it or asked anyone about it because the cover was so un-appealing. It is just a bad cover and I wonder why they couldn't have spend a little more time and effort on it. I mean, some of the members on this board have done outstanding jobs designing their own covers. Naturally the score is great and the only reason I picked it up after all is because of the comments made about it on this board.I know, I know, Jeron already told me that what counts is the score not the case and cover. True, true. Yet, the cover is supposed to be visiually appealing and get people interested to buy it. I don't know how many times I saw this cd and never gave it another thought. Even after all the positive comments, once I saw the cd, I had to think really hard about buying it. Perhaps that is the reason why Varese hasn't sold much of it.
My question, has there been any scores that you have failed to buy initially because of the bad cover design?
Oh yeah, I was talking about "On the Beach".

I can think of a MOVIE I didn't rent for years because of the box cover: REPO MAN. Boy was I missing out.And I can think of an album I DID buy because I thought the cover (and even a handful of liner notes) made it look cool: DEAD HEAT by Ernest Troost. BIG waste of money ...

I'd rather have a very plain black and white cover. The money saved from having the plain cover could fund a disc containing more than 30 minutes of music!

I would have to say that the worst cover I've seen thus far is for the Back to the Future trilogy, it was a decent re-recording by Debney, but the cover was horrible, it looked like a bad bootleg cover. It's not like varese to do a release like that with such a horrible cover.Rich D.

The cover for "Demolition Man" has a cover that looks as if I printed it out from my computer.

Scott, it's terrible, but sometimes I consider other people's opinions when it comes to buying a CD. What would my cool friends think if they saw a CD with a picture of a dog or a horse on it (similar to the pictures my grandmother has hanging on her living room wall)? That's why I haven't got Lassie or Black Beauty.
And Star Trek 3, with that lino-cut of Mr Spock is a bit cringeworthy. I've got it, but I put more coffeetable things on the coffee table when friends come round.

If my friends have a problem with a cover, I just laugh and tell 'em to deal with it. Why worry about what other people think? If it keeps you from enjoying something you love, there are apparently some issues that need to be ironed out. For me, it's all about the music (and while my friends might not particularly enjoy it, they respect it). To hell with the cover if it looks bad... we all were equipped at birth by God w/ the fascinating "ignore" feature located on the toolbar in our brain. Those of you who have upgraded to the newer version will find that an intuitive "get over it" algorithm has been incorporated into the operating system's normal functionality. For you, this shouldn't be a problem at all!

I dunno, JeronMan.It was REALLY hard to buy Doyle's A Little Princess with a straight face.
and the look in the clerk's face when he saw that, AND Sense & Sensibility along with a Dave Matthews CD....

Yeah well, those are just hard purchases to make! But if it makes you feel any better, there was a FINE chick at the cash register when I purchased the Pokemon score. Talk about getting some looks! I bet she thought I was a psycho... of course, I laughed and said, "What? Don't you listen to this stuff?"

This cover isn't so much bad as it is unambitious: Silva's latest Hitchcock compilation. Maybe they should've taken a cue from Hip-O Records and their Hitchcock cover (a great one, might I add). Then again, they (the design and record label) are basically Universal products.

The original release of Krull comes to mind...with the cheesy blue background and the really bad scanjob that makes it look all blurry and smudged. Also, I HATE CD's like the SW Special Editions, Raders of the Lost Ark, and Superman that all have those crummy cardboard boxes to protect the overly long liner-notes. They don't fit in the standardized slot sizes for most CD racks. I have to keep them on a friggin' bookshelf!

Hey!
Raiders was supposed to come with a cardboard cover? Mine didn't
Anyway, I'll agree that Rhino's Superman packaging left alot to be desired.
Also, the Episode One: Ultimate Edition cover is 'orrible.

What's wrong with "overly long" liner notes? Is it possible to have "overly long" liner notes?? I've been under the impression that the more text we get the better! This is a curious observation...Jeron

I don't think I've ever bought a score based on the quality of its cover. It's generally my interest in the music or composer I let dictate my spending habits, and when the music is the sole incentive, it's usually because I've heard it beforehand in the film.

Jeron,
I don't mind the liner notes to be detailed and informative, but when the booklets have these ultra thick glossy pages it kind of sucks.

I didn't like the cover of Angela's Ashes but that is a great score. The cover didn't keep me fron buying the score. If you new to film score the cover might pose a problem.Jeron, I agree with you about the liner notes. The more info about the score the better. I would mind if the composer wrote a little about the score instead of talking about the director or producers.
Why does everyone hate the cover of the new Episode One soundtrack. I can't think of any one or else that should have been on the cover.
I wonder what the Ultimate soundtrack disc will look like? No one made mention that the first disc would look like, so it was the only thing that surprised me when I open my EP1 soundtrack.posted 10-08-2000 07:49 AM PT (US) Old Infopop Software by UBB
