Hey guys, Varese's website was finally updated LOL and there's a bunch of surprising new releases that we should take note of:

    PAY IT FOWARD
Original Motion Picture Score By Thomas Newman for the Warner Bros. film starring Kevin Spacey, Helen Hunt and Haley Joel Osment. To be released on Oct.31

    THE SIXTH DAY
Original Motion Picture Score for the upcoming Arnold Schwarzenegger sci-fi thriller composed by Trevor Rabin
    To be released on Nov.14

    BOUNCE
The original motion picture score to Miramax romantic drama starring Ben Affleck and Gweneyth Paltrow by Mychael Danna
    To be Released on Nov.14

    CRUEL INTENTIONS:rejected score and themes
This special cd is the world premire release of John Ottman's hot rejected score to the Ryan Phillippe/Sarah Michelle Gellar film. This cd also contains suites and themes from THE CABLE GUY, HALLOWEEN H2O, LAKE PLACID, INCOGNITO, APT PUPIL AND THE FANTASY ISLAND PILOT EPISODE. To be Released on Nov.14

    THE ULTIMATE STAR TREK
This is a special compliation assembled from all the Star Trek films featuring exciting material from Jerry Goldsmith, Alexander Courage, James Horner, Leonard Rosenman, Cliff Eidelman, Dennis McCarthy and more. Performed by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra conducted by Frederic Talgorn
    To be released on Nov.14

All these except for the Star Trek look like real winners to me. Especially the Newman score...Gotta have that one!!!!

I agree! They all look pretty decent. I'm looking forward to Ottman's cd... and then Rabin's score for "The Sixth Day." Yeah, yeah everyone... shush! I know what you're thinking. :P

I'll even probably end up buying the Star Trek disc... just because I'm a Trek nut and can't resist the temptation to have yet another compilation of scores I already own.

Hey! If it's a NEW recording of Star Trek movie material, what's to stop them from filling the disc with great unreleased music? I'd buy it in a Klingon minute!

    1) "Meet Vejur" from TMP
    2) "Genesis Cave" from Khan
    3) "Attacking the Reliant" from Khan
    4) "Death of the Enterprise" from Spock
    5) "Leaving Vulcan" from Voyage Home
    6) "A Tall Ship" from Final Frontier
    7) "Guess Who's Coming ..." from Undiscovered Country
    8) "The Trial" from Undiscovered Country
    9) "Flight of the Phoenix" from First Contact
    10) "A Few Loose Ends" from Insurrection
    11) "The Launch Sequence" (film version) from Insurrection
    12) Suite from "Q, Who" from TNG
    13) Suite from "What You Leave Behind" from DS9
    14) Suite from "Scorpion" from VGR

Those are only a FEW of the great unreleased cues that they could use! But I think I'm being overly optimistic.

Sadly, it's probably just a re-hash of main/end title suites, with maybe one or two standout cues like "The Enterprise" or "Hospital Chase" that we ALREADY HAVE ON FIVE CDS!!! *sigh*

(When I checked, it gave October 24 as the release date for this one.)

Well, I'd be a happy bunny if YOU were in charge of producing this CD Wedge! I agree with every selection you mentioned.

Hey Wedge, you never did tell us what you got up to in London?

Wedge: record producer. I like the sound of that.

As for London, I did the usual tourist stuff. I DID buy four Goldsmith soundtracks I'd been waiting to buy, though: "Papillon," "Poltergeist" and "Islands in the Stream" on CD and an old LP of "The Swarm."

I also saw "Les Miserables" and was shocked to find that it included significantly more music than the American show! Anyone know where I can find the current London version on CD?

I'm in total agreement Rocco, where is WONDERBOYS? It's not on their website I think they're either delaying it again or they've unfortunetly cancelled it. I'd be willing to bet that there will be a promo of the score released soon. Damn, shame because I'd love to hear this score. The Star Trek CD looks good so far but what I'm worried bout is the performance of the orchestra that's all. But I'd like to have the cd for the unreleased material though.

As far as the rest of the year goes, I'd expect a few more surprises up their sleeves look for these scores:

    Proof of Life (Danny Elfman)
    Red Planet (Graeme Revell)
    Family Man (Danny Elfman)
The Vertical Limit (James Newton Howard)

and lord knows what else ehheehe possibly even Wonderboys finally!!!

AFAIK, Intrada still has some copies of their First Blood release for sale at their website for $14...

Amazon has the Varese version for sale, $15.

I got the First Blood reissue the other day and I'll tell you what it's beyond what I expected. Terrific artwork kudos to Varese for going after the original poster for the cover and nice to see that they stuck with the Intrada version of the cover for the back with is nice. Informative liner notes by Robert Townson, but it would've been nice to also include some of Douglass Fake's own liner notes regarding the extra music and everything. And the sound is definetly improved since the original had slight hiss. But it's a five star pick-up definetly worth getting.

Anybody who doesn't have the original FIRST BLOOD absolutely MUST get it. It's a masterpiece of film scoring, a sensational album, and it's one of my own three favorite Goldsmith scores (following PAPILLON and STAR TREK - TMP). I'm proud to have the composer's own autograph on the booklet of my Intrada copy. I love this score so much that I'm halfway tempted to buy the Varese issue just to have it ... and I almost never buy something "just to have it."

    <rant>

I wish CD companies would get their spellings right for stuff! It's V'GER NOT VEJUR! That really spoilt the 20th anniversary edition for Star Trek The Motion Picture...

I think the problem is that Gene Roddenberry favored the "Vejur" spelling, at least as expressed by his novelization. If he came up with the name originally (the story is credited to Alan Dean Foster, but the outline came from Roddenberry), that might account for it. I've never read the Harold Livingston screenplay, but Marv Wolfman's comic book adaptation of it also favors the spelling "V'ger," so presumably Livingston changed it (possibly just to tweak Roddenberry, whom he professionally despised, although "V'ger" is the only LOGICAL spelling, considering what we find out about it ...) So why did Goldsmith and/or the record company spell it "Vejur"? You got me, but there is a precedent.

The spelling is "Vejur" so people will keep thinking it's an alien name and not guess the surprise ending. It's that simple.

VARESE will be releasing a expanded version of TOTAL RECALL,that's a call hard fact.

As to how much longer and the exact date I can't say.

However I think they're trying to get it out the door before the end of the year.

Oh Kyp, you take me too seriously. Get Pay It Forward, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I just know I don't want it if it sounds like another American Beauty or Erin Brockovich. But I'll see the film and see how it works... if it interests me, I'll pick it up. On the other hand, Total Recall has proven itself time and time again to be a must-have action score from one of the industry's most prominent and successful composers of our time.

I liked the cue when Quaid walks up to Rekall and into the building. It is one of the cues where the "Total Recall" theme is played very slowly. I think it sounds a little ambiant. It is not on the original cd. The original cd lasts only 40:40 minutes. The music is playing almost constantly through the film.

Ops Aaron... I think the cue you mentioned IS on the old Varese album.
Isn't it cue number 6, "FIRST MEETING"?

I'm quite sure it's the cue for the scene when Quaid enters the Rekall building and the secretary is "painting" her fingernails...

    Am I right?

André, I think you are right! However I don't think that the cue where Quaid is picking his vaction is on the disc. That cue, along with previous music is what I was thinking.
