AMC just showed the widescreen Corman film The Haunted Palace. The score by Ronald Stein was recently issued on CD so I watched The Haunted Palace to hear what the score sounded like.

I'd never seen this film. It was one of the better Cormans, much superior to Ligeia, The Terror, and others.

The score was good music but a bit too much for the film. People just walk down cooridors and hallways while the music is just pumping.

Noticed two things--First, a phrase that was very similar to a theme from Toto's score to DUNE. Second, a figure for clarinet or some other woodwind that sounds like a similar figure from JAWS and other Williams scores.

In the film, there are many sections where the score plays with minimal dialogue and effects. I haven't picked up the Haunted Palace/Premature Burial CD yet so I obviously can't say which cues make the CD or not.

As someone who (VERY HAPPILY!) owns the new disc from Percepto Records, I can assure you that ALL of the music composed for the film made it onto the disc. A lot of the music in the film was tracked and repeated.

This music is fantastically good ... Ronald Stein was a brilliant composer. Of course, you'd think that for such an old film, the music tapes were neglected and the quality irrevokably degraded. Wrong! The album master sounds crisp, clear and better than the film master ... great, even by today's standards. The liner notes (while not always grammatically correct ) are very informative.

This CD gets my HIGHEST recommendation. Buy it today, and support future releases of neglected classics!
