First time I noticed Cliff Eidelman’s music was in ONE TRUE
THING. I noted the other day that JJH was “now playing”
Magdalene, so I rented that movie. The music was rich in themes
with a full orchestra and choir. I was impressed. I own A Simple
Twist of Fate have always enjoyed Untamed Heart. I’m still looking
to rent Christopher Columbus. If IMDB is correct, this composer is
only 33 years old. (Born l967) Wow! I’m hoping Hollywood will
start giving him more films and big budget movies, where this man
can really flex his already considerable musical muscles.

Are there other movies you would suggest I rent to hear his
    filmscores?

NP A Simple Twist of Fate

First score i got from him was Star Trek the undiscovered country. Awesome score.

Another score you may want to listen to, which is really beautiful, is Free Willy part 3, one of my faves.

    A great talkent, no doubt.

Try also Triumph of the Spirit. Very good indeed.

Trek was my intro to Eidelman, but others I enjoy are CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS:THE DISCOVERY and his rejected (but released) score for PICTURE BRIDE.

Joan, my two favorites by him are Star Trek VI-great score and the Columbus movie-which is a horrible film by the way-like a poor TV film. Also good is Triumph of the Spirit. Yes, in 1991 when he did that great Star Trek score he was so young. He needs to break out of all those syrupy-sweet sappy type films and do some other types though. Best, John.

I only know his Trek score, but that was my favourite of the series before I got Goldsmith's Star Trek: TMP.

NP: Franz Liszt: A Faust Symphony (Chicago Symphony Orchestra & Chorus, Sir Georg Solti)

I got Christopher Columbus yesterday in the mail as a matter of fact, slong with Magdalene. my favorite is Magdalene.

I'm, slightly disappointed with Columbus, though. I was expecting a huge Cutthroat Island type of affair.
    good theme nontheless.

I really like his syrupy scores: Now and Then, Untamed Heart, and One True Thing are all good efforts.

His fairy-tale-like score for 'A Simple Twist of Fate' is wonderful. He uses intimate compositions very well. The theme is played mostly by solo instruments, and because of that, when strings finally do come in to perform the theme, the louder moments are very effective. He never really bursts out into full orchestra and that is what makes his work on this score so respectable.

I'm largely underwhelmed by Eidelman, but he's done some competent work, particularly CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS: THE DISCOVERY and TRIUMPH OF THE SPIRIT (which was used in some of the trailers for SCHINDLER'S LIST.) That's a particularly broad, emotional score, dedicated to his mother, who died during its composition.

I'm not sure why he doesn't work more often ... I think he's probably very picky about his assignments, which can be fatal for a young composer (it's more about getting your name in people's faces AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE when you're starting out -- look at the earliest credits of Kamen and Zimmer/Mancina ... you don't see Eidelman doing "back-credit" work on movies like DEAD-BANG or SNIPER, and either that's because he's not wanted for them, or he's not interested enough in pursuing them. For a while I thought Eidelman might be trying to carve out a conducting career, as Jonathan Sheffer has ... maybe not though.)

NP: "Asswhippin" by Fishbone (maybe the funniest song I've heard all year -- roomie's just put it on a loop)

I like Eidelman. I don'tt have Christopher Columbus but have seen the movie and loved the music. His A Simple Twist of Fate is beautiful/haunting/moving. It's also syrupy but then I love syrupy.
