I've seen both The Green Mile and American Beauty, and personally, they were really powerful movies. Do the score releases work well outside the movie? Eg: good to listen to while studying?

While you're at it, are there any other Thomas Newman efforts that deserve attention as well?

    Thanks.

I wouldn't listen to American Beauty while studying.

Green Mile, to me, is a mess of CD, but the last third is really great. "Coffey on the Mile" is great music.

    Thomas Newman recommendations:

    Little Women
    Oscar and Lucinda
How to Make an American Quilt
Fried Green Tomatoes (good luck finding the CD!)
    Meet Joe Black
    Shawshank Redemption

NP -- A Summer Story, Delerue

I love Newman, here are my suggestions some of which maybe hard to find:

    The Shawshank Redemption
    The Linguini Incident
    Josh And SAM
    Little Women
    The People Vs.Larry Flynt
    Cookie
    Less Than Zero
    Phenomenon
    Whispers In The Dark
    Red Corner
    The Horse Whisperer
    Mad City
    The Player
    Welcome Home Roxy Carmichel
    Men Don't Leave
How To Make An American Quilt
    The Rapture
    American Beauty
    The Green Mile
    Erin Brockovich
    The War
    Fried Green Tomatoes
    Oscar and Lucinda

In other words, not just get just one Thomas Newman score, Get em all he's an underrated genius!!!!!!!!

All we need for him do at least once and that's score an action movie. And Red Corner doesn't count, but let's say it's cutting the surface.

    P.O.
The Replacements (John Debney/Various) ***/**** The Falco track sounds much like Thomas Newman ironically.

Thomas Newman is one of my favorite composers. His music is excellent and moving. I'm not sure that "American Beauty" is good studying music, but I'd get it none the less. It's a beautiful score, in my opinion. I'd also recommend all other scores of his previously mentioned. You generally can't go wrong with any of Newman's work.

Seems like all the important Thomas Newman titles have been brought up. I hope this doesn't sound too strange, given this thread is about Thomas Newman ... but I'd also recommend two scores not composed by Thomas Newman, that SOUND very much like Thomas Newman: A CIVIL ACTION by Danny Elfman; and HEATHERS by Tom's brother DAVID Newman, who himself observed that HEATHERS was kind of his own single stab at a "Thomas" kind of score.

I have to reinforce The Player, The Shawshank Redemption and Little Women. Thomas Newman is one of my favorite composers and these scores are above and beyond.

I wish someone would release the score from The Lost Boys, too.

For someone being introduced to T. Newman's music, I would recommend these as they represent some of his most thematically strong work. The first 4 are easy to find (you may be able to get a great deal on ebay).

    Little Women
    The Horse Whisperer
    Meet Joe Black
How To Make An American Quilt
Fried Green Tomatoes (full score, rare)

Check out samples at Amazon or CD Now, etc.
If you like what you hear, then you will like the CD's for sure.
    Enjoy! _Sc
