I went to see NURSE BETTY tonight and enjoyed the movie
and the lovely filmscore by a UK composer unknown to me,
Rolfe Kent. His music was an unexpected surprise. A lot of source
music is used, and for a while, his underscore reminded me a little
of the music from Terms on Endearment. It seemed placed to suggest
travel and the passage to time, and at times suspense. It’s main theme
is romantic and lovely..and perhaps repeated too often. However,
it is a postive, upbeat celebration of a woman who survives the loss
of her quixotic illusions. The movie isn’t for everyone, but I found its unique and original script
refreshing after a six month term of hackneyed, cliché-driven, predictable
movies. It mixes winsome, breezy comedy with extreme violence and
the absurd, all with an arthouse effect reminiscent of Fargo but with
a lighter touch. Renee Zellweger’s Doris Day/Don Quixote character
is pure delight. Morgan Freeman recalls the detective from LAURA,
and as usual, he delivers a most dignified performance.
(Quentin T. meets Disney?)Top it all off with a surprisingly affecting score of Rolfe Kent. Do any of
you know this composer? I looked at his filmography at IMDB, and he
has written for TV and films, but I haven’t heard his scores before this
movie.NP Morning by Grieg. In the mood for more lovely melody

Since the topic came up, here is the Rolfe Kent's official website

I saw ELECTION a while back (delightfully dark film; it's like RUSHMORE's evil twin, IMHO) and I fell in love with Kent's score.

I agree with SBD, Election is a knock-out. Both the film and the score. It's Ferris Buller's Day Off ass backward LOL. Kent's score only featured as a 5 or 6 minute suite on the song album only shows how magical this score really is. Well I was lucky enough to acquire the promo for the score which runs 22 minutes, but unfortunetly isn't complete. But I'm really glad I got it because it's a great score. Loads of spanish flavored riffs with a touch of Ira Newborn thrown in. Here's some trivia who scored Ferris Bueller's Day Off?

Peter, do you even know who Ira Newborn is? Newborn in case you don't know has scored loads of comedies from Ferris Buller's Day Off to the Naked Gun trilogy. And what I mean by a touch of Newborn is that Kent in parts of Election his score sounds like he's mimicking Newborn's music in certain places. But with his own trademark which I commend because it's really hard to work a temp track nowadays. As action scores are temped with The Fugitive, Air Force One, Crimson Tide and others. While comedies are being temped with scores like Dave, Big, etc. That's what I mean. And in case you're interested in Newborn, if you really know your stuff, Pete...here's a list of movies worth checking out for his score:Uncle Buck (which is great)
Innocent Blood
Dragnet (which he co-composed and orchestrated with both Alf Clausen and David Newman. That's right David Newman)
Wierd Science
High School High
The Naked Gun Trilogy
Planes, Trains and Automobiles
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Ace Ventura Pet Detective
The Late Shift
My Blue Heaven (where's this score album)
Wise Guys
Sixteen Candles
Caddyshack 2
Bad Manners

Nothing meant against Rolfe Kent, whose music I barely know ... but when I saw/heard ELECTION, the only piece of music that REALLY impressed me was a few choral licks from -- yes -- an Ennio Morricone spaghetti western. (title forgotten. No, Kent didn't steal it, but I've read several times that the vocal motif for the rage of Reese Witherspoon's character was taken from the Morricone album.)
