Ever on the lookout for items of interest, I ran into 2 CDs that may be of interest to someone here besides me.City of Strangers performed by Ute Lemper--one of the songs is 'Allein in einer groben stadt' (Alone in a Big City) composed by Franz Waxman. There are also songs by Hans Eisler, Joseph Kosma, and 'Friedrich Hollaender' (or Frederick Hollander as we know him in the States).
A Secret Life performed by Marianne Faithfull--all of the songs are composed by Angelo Badalamenti.
NP: Barbarella (Bob Crewe/Charles Fox)

I respect Angelo. But I have zero respect for a no-talent no-voice piece-of-nothing like Marianne Faithfull. I remember when BROKEN ENGLISH came out in the 1970s. It included a funny sprechstimme tune called "Why D'Ya Do It?". Her voice worked there because the tune didn't require any actual singing.http://www.canoe.ca/JamAlbumsF/faithfull_m_secret.html

Yeah, MF vocals are an acquired taste just like listening to Chet Baker---the vocal is soooooo slow and gutteral. But I thought her title vocal for Isham's Trouble in Mind score was pretty good. She made a movie with Alain Delon called Lady on a Motorcycle or something like that---it's supposed to be real trash, but I've been wanting to see it anyway.

I recently heard a John Barry score called PLAYING BY HEART. It included a few Chet Baker tunes which bored me to tears. Even the Barry tracks bored me. (It's Barry on auto-pilot in his slow-hypnotic mode.) I'll give Chet another listen, but Marianne is just another ugly-voiced bore-meister (like Bob Dylan).NP: "1900 Yesterday" by Liz Damon's Orient Express.
