Is this score by Mr. G worth buying? I remember as a kid thinking the movie was rediculous......and can't remember a thing about the score itself. So should I let it sit in the used bin forever..or should I snap it up as quick as I can. Thanks in advance! You guys are great!

It's Goldsmith, baby, that's for shure. But this expanded Silva release gets on my nerves. If people think the Rudy album is repetitive, woah Nelly. Lookout. I listen to this album once, it's done for the rest of the year. Sometimes (more often than not, to my ear), complete albums just aren't that great. They can certainly kill any interest in listening to them again...Just a little thought of mine, which probably isn't like anyone else's!

Good point, Zap... That's why God gave us CD players with programming capability. I'd rather have 77:50 and have the option to listen to it all than 42:00 and change and wish there was more.

PS.... Total sarcasm there. Personal opinion (as always), but I think the electronics are great. Very characteristic of the time the film was released. Nostalgic!

A.G. is right.
"Supergirl" is a great score, particulary when you consider how goofy the movie is.But I agree the electronics get too heavy in some tracks.
For those unhappy with the 77 minutes of the gorgeous Silva Screen album (and also too busy to press the "skip" buttom), there's the 45 minutes
Varese album you can dig for. Some people are never happy...

You're right. The Varese album miss all the electronics from the Main and End Title (which is a bad thing), but in the track "Monster Tractor" and "Monster Storm" it's better without it.It's GOLDSMITH baby!
I think I'll listen to "Final Showdown/End Titles (12 minutes of absolute POWER!!)...
See you later, mates!

Too bad we can't embed sounds on the page... If we could, I would upload an enless loop of the "Supergirl theme" and the Yamaha "WOOSH SOUND." I know everybody here LOVES IT SO MUCH.

Just to say it, SUPERGIRL is my favorite adventure score.First off, it's just inappropriate to judge a film score strictly by its presentation on album (Are you listening, CLEMMENSEN???!!!). SUPERGIRL has great *music* and makes for a great *album,* but, it's because the score succeeds in the picture that one can judge it as good. Film music must be in service to the film first.
Secondly, I ADORE repetition as long as its with variation, permutation, etc. SUPERGIRL includes this in the best of the Goldsmith tradition. A film score is not worthy of being called such if it does not introduce musical material and then extract as much usage out of that material as possible. As characters and a conflict are introduced in a film and then each's presence persists throughout a picture, so too the music should be introduced and then recycled and permutated from start to finish. THE OMEN and CHINATOWN are good examples of films that contain scores of great continuity.
Also, I love the use of electronics in the score. Goldsmith employs these instruments for helping him to highlight the bizarre, etc. in the narrative of SUPERGIRL; the synths do help and the score overall is able to resonate better with an audience--conveying to it the extraordinary when the synths are orchestrated into the music.
Frankly, I'm finding that I can't enjoy an album of film music if the music as score in its film was ineffective, etc., anyhow.
I'm glad you've bought the score album; it's good music. But, I'd remind one of the proper place of and perspective on judgment of film music.

Yes, but they work far better in the film than they do on the album IMO.

Although Andre seems quite freaked by the Varese album, I've been looking for it. I would like to hear the alternate versions of the cues that were changed for Silva's release (which I enjoy, by the way).

I must respectfully disagree with PeterK. The variety on this 78 minute disc is most impressive. And the score just ROCKS! Thanks, in no small part, to the infectious main themes ... especially the ever-so-simple but ever-so-sweet love theme. Mmmmmm ...I actually just purchased this disc earlier this week, and I'm already on my sixth listen.

Hey A.G.You're right, I guess, but, it's definitely the former rather than the latter that matters most--or ONLY matters.
However, I had never seen the film (and wasn't really going to) until the special edition came out of the International version. I really like the electronics in the music; it adds an other-worldly quality to the sound design. It's part of the reason that I definitely prefer SUPERGIRL to SUPERMAN.

Speaking of 80's cheese, on the Supergirl double DVD there's a making of. In a couple of shots they show screen tests for Slater in her costume.....only its the costume of Supergirl from the 80's!!!!!!!! The HUGE "S" on her chest....AWFUL PERM.......AND....THE RED BANDANA!!!!!!!!!! I stopped the dvd and muttered "OhmyGod" in disbelief.Check it out!!!!!

Good Lord ... I won't BUY the DVD to see that, but I'd sure RENT it ...reminds me of a commercial Helen Slater did for Japanese TV: backed by the SUPERGIRL theme (and a couple of shots of her in costume) she then faces the camera in normal clothes, plugging a Japanese "health drink" (many of them are thinly disguised amphatamine boosters): "Drink Biomim X," she chirps, "it's SUPER! It's a GREAT drink for GOODNESS!" I have this one on video someplace.
A thought on the length of the Varese and Silva CDs: the alternate takes on the Varese disc aren't that much different from those on the Silva, and additionally, the Silva release restores SO MUCH terrific music, including all the choral stuff and (to my mind) SUPERIOR renditions ("swoooosh" and all) of the Supergirl theme, that the Varese version absolutely pales in comparison. I was never happy with that disc, and didn't even much like the SUPERGIRL score until I heard the Silva version.
In terms of sheer musical NOTES written, SUPERGIRL is one of Goldsmith's busiest scores, along with THE SWARM, KING SOLOMON'S MINES, and TOTAL RECALL. Incredibly dense and exciting stuff, even if served up to the purpose of dramatizing complete fluff. Hey, somebody's gotta do it.
Oh, and Andre, one thing about the Varese cover (the US poster art) -- the Statue of Liberty is holding her torch in THE WRONG HAND!!!!!

I just want to say that I still love this score and its electronics three years later. It's a bit repetitive at times, but it's got that great "big" sound with a fantastic performance by what's probably my favorite orchestra, the National Philharmonic.I tried to watch Supergirl a while ago when it was playing one afternoon on WGN. I was channel surfing and when I heard the music I decided to stop flipping channels. I couldn't identify the music at first, but I eventually noticed it was the "Monster Tractor" part of Supergirl. After that sequence was over, I decided to change the channel. I think I found it quite comical for reasons I can't remember.

There is no such thing as a CD done "right" or "wrong" when we're talking about edited/re-sequenced scores. Many supposedly well produced albums are completely unsatisfying to many of us and make us wish for more. It's all subjective.

Very wise of Silva to re-release it.

Yes, from the game.
I personally enjoy it, composed by Jeremy Soule.
It isn't 100 percent Star Wars music, but it contains familiar themes.
