1) Gladiator
2) Chicken Run
3) The Patriot
4) Perfect StormDon't know why, but I thought Zimmer's MI2 was extremely dissapointing... I guess Woo can be blamed though, Zimmer didn't have much to work with, that's for sure.

Not an impressive summer. Perhaps the weakest in recent memory.Best score I've heard all year: Howard Shore's THE CELL.
Favorite theme: John Williams' THE PATRIOT. It's journeyman Williams, he could probably have dashed it off in his sleep, but still easier on the ears than most of what I heard this summer.
Most listenable new score overall: Michael Kamen's X-MEN.
Biggest disappointments: Jerry Goldsmith's HOLLOW MAN (which is okay, but neither film nor score were up to what I hoped for); James Horner's PERFECT STORM (perhaps the worst score I've heard this year, and the film was tedious beyond belief); and Takayuki Hattori's GODZILLA 2000.
Biggest surprise: also GODZILLA 2000: J. Peter Robinson's original additional music, including some slick adaptations of Ifukube themes not heard in the original version, pumped up the American version of GODZILLA 2000 quite a bit. The only time I can remember when an American version of a Godzilla film actually has a soundtrack preferable to the Japanese original.
My favorite new albums of the year have tended to be the FSM Silver Classic issues, especially BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES, TORA TORA TORA, and THE OMEGA MAN. Hats off also to Prometheus for finally bringing forth Goldsmith's THE CHALLENGE.
Honorable mentions: I thought CHICKEN RUN and GLADIATOR sounded okay.

Well, this summer I've only bought a few scores of new movies, so I'd have to say:Chicken Run
On The Beach (Released May 28... Not quite summer yet, was it? If it wasn't, oh well.

Well, I didn't see a ton of movies this summer. what a bummer; not that I had any time anyway. The Patriot made the best score
Hollow Man scores with the best all around album; it all flows together for me. It's not a powerhouse score, but it's just plain good.but after hearing The Cell in the theater, I have to put that at the same level as Patriot, for its inventiveness, something Howard Shore seems to do on a daily basis.

Best scores rhis summer:1. The Patriot
2. Dinosaur
3. What Lies BeneathBest Re-release:
Jaws
MarnieAs for the rest:
Hollow Man gets a little dull after awhile, Godzilla 2000 was dreadful, Perfect Storm was typical Horner (ho-hum), Gladiator, been there done that, heard it before in Crimson Tide or any other MV score. Kinda dry summer for scores IMHO.posted 09-10-2000 02:13 PM PT (US)

Dinosaur and Chicken Run. Other than those two it was a lackluster summer for movie scores.

Nothing else.

Doyle's LOVE'S LABOUR'S LOST has certainly received the most play time out of the scores I've purchased for 2000, and as an album, is easily my favorite of the summer. Often a wonderful pastiche of styles -- the musical, over-the-top Golden Age sweep, mixed with Doyle's own personal melodic touch (think GREAT EXPECTATIONS, MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, etc.) "Victory" is unquestionably the single best piece of music I've heard all year. Its sentimentally celebratory, with a great sweeping nobility. I'm still hoping the film will reach a theater near me so I can hear how the score (and songs) function in the film.On CD, I thought THE PATRIOT was a familiar but solid score from Williams. Likewise, it never failed to deliver what was called for onscreen. Whether stirring or reflective patriotism, familial love, or in underlining and stressing tragic sadness and anger, Williams nailed it all perfectly. Too bad the film turned strictly into a revenge fantasy towards the end.
THE PERFECT STORM overall was a surprisingly refreshing effort from Horner, though excessively repetitious (and perhaps inappropriately conceived for the film -- I still haven't decided on whether Horner "missed the boat scoring THE PERFECT STORM or not; it's definitely a rare occasion where he has misappropriated the needs of a film in spots; regardless, it's a solid album).
I liked Morricone's MISSION TO MARS for the most part when I saw the film, but have yet to pick it up. I'll get it sometime.
Much like the film, Goldsmith's score to HOLLOW MAN was an intriguing effort that didn't completely pay off. I wouldnt fault Goldsmith, though, because the film went in the wrong direction and Goldsmith was just supplying it with the kind of music it needed. For me, it's nice listen on CD up until "Find Him." After that, again, as with the film, I found little of interest.

I cannot believe someone actually saw Love's Labour Lost, it does not deserve mention. A puke of a film, ALL HAIL THE MOTHER OF ALL SCORES AND SHAKESPEARE FILMS...TITUS!

Re: LOVE'S LABOUR'S LOSTThough the film may very well be a misfire, I'll reserve judgement until I've seen it.
LOVE'S LABOUR'S LOST and PETER'S FRIENDS remain the only films I haven't seen that Branagh has directed. The rest are noteworthy films that I've enjoyed (even the excessively hyperactive FRANKENSTEIN has a strange energetic charm that's hard to resist once caught up in the action). While musicals generally are not my thing, Branagh imbues his films with such thrilling energy that I'm certainly interested in seeing how his unusual approach to Shakespeare came off. However, I felt the score as heard on CD DID deserve mention.

I wouldn't say this was a bad Soundtrack summer at all. There are a lot of scores that have a special thing.
My list:1. Chicken Run (so perfect)
2. Dinosaur (absolutely delicious)
3. Titus (one of the best ever)
4. Gladiator (a superb Zimmer)
5. M:i-2 (action- and suspense-packed)
6. X-Men (surprisingly brilliant)posted 09-19-2000 09:13 AM PT (US)

Rang, I found Love's Labours Lost a really fun movie. I'm not too keen on musicals either, but Branagh just made the best possible thing out of a mediocre Shakespeare drama. At points, it's intendedly ridiculous, and always fun. It's certainly not Branagh's best movie, but it's still good. BTW, I love Frankenstein. Yes, it is very over-the-top, but that's what I like about it.Oh, and you really should watch Peter's Friends, also very good!

HOLLOW MAN.It was the only SCORE of the summer that was truly great...and boy was it. It has nothing to do with the music itself--I'm not a "Oh, I like it because it's evil" type of listener.
To me, the score was perfectly conceived and executed, with the utmost care for detail and an artistic finesse that Goldsmith has defined in the industry.
No one is or ever was quite so good at taking a little and developing/extracting from it a whole heck of a lot.
That's my peace.

2. X-Men
3. Chicken Run
4. Gladiator
5. Hollow ManThat's Scores
The only song album I really liked from this summer was Titan A.E. It had every song that used in the film on there. Could've used even 20 minutes of Graeme Revell's score for the film. What I heard I liked. It's too bad they didn't think to include it on the CD. Would've made more sense than without it frmo the album's point of view as a relfection of the film. Business wise- they may see it as an impracticality- the "they" in this case is the record executive who seem to have become enamored of the inner linings of their backsides. Forgive me, but I digress.
