The Bond Back in Action Volume 1 was so badly done that I really hesitate to pick this up even if it does have Barry cues I don't otherwise own.

Being the barry expert around here (self proclaimed
), How'd ya beat me to that info Jeron?! Lou, I thought some of the tracks on Vol.1 were done very well, though Bond meets the Girls/Who Will Buy My Yesterdays from OHMSS and Blofeld's Laser from DAF were totally butchered. Curiously Blofeld's Laser is credited as being previously unrecorded, when in fact it was on the original DAF as 007 and Counting!

Hm, what's wrong with #1? I love it. But then, I got it for my birthday this January, and at that time it was the ONLY Bond music I'd ever heard (except for the famous theme, obiously). Believe it or not, it was only after I got this CD that I finally managed to watch some Bond movies. So, I don't have a single OST Bond CD, but after having seen some movies, I still love my Bond Back in Action album.NP: Pan Tadeusz (Kilar) - Thanks, Timmer!

I like Bond: Back in Action, also. I'm not real familiar with the original recordings, so the different tempos or whatever don't bother me.

Speaking of unreleased music, I'd like to have the pyramid fight cue from The Spy Who Loved Me.I just love when he says "Hope you enjoyed the show" and the music goes into a crescendo.

Ahh cool!
But as it is, I have my own compilations to listen to
MY version of Volume 2 has the following original recordings:Music, Bond Music - Volume 2
1 - 4) Live and Let Die by George Martin
(James Bond Theme/Bond Meets Solitare/Bond Drops In/Tresspassers Will Be Eaten)
5 - 7) The Man With The Golden Gun by John Barry
(Scaramanga's Fun House/Goodnight Goodnight/Let's Go Get 'Em)
8) The Spy Who Loved Me (Bond '77) by Marvin Hamlisch
9 - 11) Moonraker by John Barry
(Cable Car & Snake Fight/Space Lazer Battle/Bong Arrives in Rio & Boat Chase)
12 - 13) For Your Eyes Only by Bill Conti
(Gonzales Takes a Dive/Runaway)
14 - 15) Octopussy by John Barry
009 Gets the Knife/That’s my Little Octopussy
16 - 18) A View To A Kill by John Barry
Snow Job/Bond Meets Stacy/Golden Gate Fight
19 - 21) The Living Daylights By John Barry
Ice Chace/Kara Meets Bond/Hurcules Takes OffWhile I realize that purchasing a compilation CD sich as Silva's may be cool for those who don't have access to all the CDs, I am very anal about original recordings. I tend to avoid re-recordings. But that's an arguement for another time. Volume one was almost as good as the originals, but as there is alot of percussion in the volume II music, I'm really nervous about how its gonna come out. So I think I'm happy with what I have

Jonathan, were you not aware of the dispute between Barry and Norman regarding *who* actually composed the Bond theme? Norman has always been credited, but Barry says he wrote it. Norman disagrees (or else why would he be credited?). Barry contends, "if you composed the theme, why did I score the rest of the films?" ....... it's a big mass of confusion and I suppose that's what they will be sorting out shortly. Finally. Hopefully.Jeron

Ahhhh Marian, as you readily admit, your not that familiar with the Bond scores, if you haven't heard the originals there really is little point in explaining whats wrong with this album. I must admit though that after a few listens I quite enjoy volume 1, I still can't listen to Who Will Buy My Yesterdays (is someone playing a comb on this?) and the messed up Blofelds Laser which is strangely credited as previously unrecorded, when the original is titled 007 And Counting on the Diamonds Are Forever soundtrack.NP : nothing

Right, what I meant was that I didn't notice any obviously wrong notes.I guess it's a similar case as Silva's Essential Goldsmith compilation. At first, I was shocked, but now I like most of it. Some pieces are done very annoyingly, e.g. the synthesized blaster in the Trek suite or the final notes of Total Recall.

Does this really exist???? I've checked silva's website and can't find a thing about this album.. I just hope it does exist.. I've been a Bond fan for as long as I remember and I would do anything to get my hands on some of those cues... namely the music from the tank chase from Goldeneye. Zwar--we seem to be on opposite sides of this arguement. Every re-record I've hated you've praised. Is there a way to get you to see it my way? OK, a lot of original tracks sound bad, that was the recording technology of the day. But their performances, tempos, accuracy of playing can't be matched in most cases. If I were to make a tape for you of the original cues from You Only Live Twice and OHMSS that are on Bond I and followed them with the Bond I versions I can't imagine that you'd want the Bond I versions on CD over the originals. But who knows?

Nic--See my posting under the 3 Worlds topic. But I must say here that McNeely's versions of Herrmann are far superior to Raine & Bateman's versions of Barry. If you can enjoy these things go ahead--but I know they can be vastly improved upon.Oh, and for the record, there are instances where a later re-record actually surpasses earlier recordings for the soundtrack. My favorite example is Laurie Johnson's First Men in the Moon. The original tracks were issued on Cloud Nine and they pale in comparison with the suite he recorded in the 70s that is on the Varese Avengers CD.
If all re-records were like THAT, I wouldn't bitch.

Your so right there Lou, even the re-recording of Captain Kronos surpases the original, the title theme of which can be found on The Hammer Film Music Collection vol.1.
What a shame Laurie Johnson didn't do more film work!

Incidentally: the friction between John Barry and Monty Norman has been going on for decades, and the first I ever heard that Barry actually wrote the original Bond theme was in a 1983, I think, issue of SOUNDTRACK! magazine. The following issue contained a sternly worded letter from a "friend" of Norman's to the effect that Norman wrote the theme, and that's why he's credited with such on each successive picture. I personally believe Barry DID write the theme, but was the lesser "name" at the time, and it was due to contractual restrictions that Norman's name has been used ever since. I even suspect that Barry wrote the subsequent "007" theme (which I actually like just as much) under his own name, in hopes that it might become as popular as the "Norman" theme, and replace it in people's affections. As it transpired, no dice.Didn't Barry basically ghostwrite the majority of the DR. NO score? (I've never seen the film nor heard the album, so can only guess. I bet a single listen would make it abundantly clear, though.)

I'm with you Rocco, I also believe barry wrote the bond theme. However, I wouldnt be surprised if he did not write the score to Dr. No. In my opinion the best stuff from the film was unreleased until recently on silvas first bond back in action album. In fact, on the Dr. No soundtrack there is a track entitled the james bond theme, when in fact it is just a cheezy island sounding piece. I think norman wrote the score to this film, and did a horrible job at it too. But thats just my own opinion.Action Guy

Jonathon is right, Barry did only get paid £200 for his work on the Bond theme, I think the score to Dr No is a complete mess right from the mish mash of music in the opening credits to the hilariously over the top music during the 'beating the Tarantula to death with a shoe' sequence (as anyone here who knows me will tell you, I'm not keen on seeing Tarantula's get wasted.....lovely creatures don't ya know!
), the score does have one or two worthwhile moments but nothing to get worked up about.Did you know that John Barry is at the moment scoring the WWII spy film ENIGMA.....The big question is....Will He stay with it?!
I sincerely hope so.NP : The Witches Of Eastwick - Marian Williams errrr John Schedenig errrrrrrrrr
