Lou,It is especially galling when you consider the number of times that Alfred Newman was nominated. I love Newman's music, but he got nominated almost every year. Further, he won 9 times.
If Bernard Herrmann hadn't been so abrasive, he might have gotten nominated more often. But maybe if he had been more easygoing, his music would have suffered for it.

Herrmann wasn't the only major composer to be nominated but a few times. What I don't understand is how the Academy could have not even nominated some pretty major Herrmann achievements. The Oscars have always been political and aren't just voted on by composers alone. Newman wasn't just a composer, but the head of a studio department, probably much better known and liked in Hollywood as a result.

I believe that the most undeserved awards were given to LILI(1953), LOVE IS A MANY SPLENDORED THING(1955), in a year when THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM and ROSE TATOO were nominated, TOM JONES(1963)against CLEOPATRA, MARY POPPINS(1964) against FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE, THOROUGLY MODERN MILLIE(1967)against COOL HAND LUKE, IN COLD BLOOD and FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD, LOVE STORY(1970)against PATTON and SUNFLOWER, The Chaplin ridiculus win over Williams´ IMAGES in 1972, THE WAY WE WERE(1973) outrageus win against PAPILLON, MIDNIGHT EXPRESS(1978) against Williams, Goldsmith and Morricone´s masterpiece DAYS OF HEAVEN, A LITTLE ROMANCE(1979)against STAR TREK, FAME(1980)wich ridiculusly won against ALTERED STATES, EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, THE ELEPHANT MAN and TESS, ROUND MIDNIGHT(1986)surprisingly won against THE MISSION.
I´ll live the 90s out of this because it is a giant topic of discussion...(Menken, Titanic, etc).I´d also wish UNDER FIRE had won THE RIGHT STUFF and THE UNTOUCHABLES the LAST EMPEROR.
About Herrmann, he was the black sheep of Hollywood composers in the 50s and also don´t forget that Hitchcock was not much appreciated in the same period..posted 09-01-2000 01:50 AM PT (US) Old Infopop Software by UBB
