I have a chance to get this CD which looks like all score by John Lurie (ever heard of him?) And I was wondering what the music was like. I saw the movie a few years ago when it cam out in in 1996 but I don't remember the score.
This is the movie with Alicia Silverstone.

Tim, it's a quirky score, certainly not the style that every other composer is trying imitate or copy unto death. However, if you are used to sweeping orchestra things, pass on it. Otherwise, treat your ears to something new! The one song on the CD is by the Red House Painters, one of my favorite artists from a few years back.

Hmm a quirky score,I consider most of Rachel Portman's comedy scores quirky, is that a good comparison?
well I am interested in hearing it, I just wish there was a place where I could get sound clips, but no online store seems to carry this title.

Tim, do you have, or have you heard, Get Shorty? It's more like that. The main theme is a cool 10-note, 2 or 3 bar (meaning quick!) piece played on trombone.

The instruments are all from a typical jazz or rock band set-up, yet the way the music is written, it often doesn't sound anything like jazz or rock. There are elements of electronic guitar (not like the Rabin or Mancina kind, however). There are a few cues with strings as well. And there is a nice horn section that shows up on some tracks. It's quite the experiment in sounds. Most of the tracks are less than 2 minutes each, which may or may not bother you. Some of them are cross-faded.

What I would do is look for other scores that have sound clips by John Lurie - he has a very distinct sound.

Get it and then try and describe it yourself - it's difficult, which is what makes it so great!

Well I'll check it out some other time perhaps, instead I picked up Wind and the Lion.
Thanks for the info though, and looking up other scores is a good idea.
