Folks, I had the pleasure of meeting a very nice individual who posts regularly to this site. He lives in the same area of the country as I do- and he reminds me so much of me when I was 19- but he has one edge over me, he's actually gone out and made contacts with people in the scoring community. Jeron Moore is a one of those rare people I coud say I should stay in contact with- because he could very well make it in the film industry.

I bring this up because, of late, there hasn't been a lot of people talking about the positive things site has done. For me, it's provided me with information to track down scores I never thought I'd be able to get, make friends with people such as Sebulba whose generosity knows no bounds to me (he mastered my first original music disc), and now Jeron, whom I consider to be quite the colleague. I think this site and it's message board, for all the recent negativity that's transpired, need some recognition for some of the good things it's done. Anybody else have any positive things to say about Moviemusic.com, bring it on!

    Widescreen,

I agree one hundred percent. I love this site and thank God almost daily for it. And about Jeron, I completely agree. What a guy. What a friend.

    PeterK,
    thanks again.

I think that whole "Detroit Dandies" thing was a great story for the real coolness it is when a bunch of online people get together and meet at a real place, especially if it's an event that has to do with why we are all here in the first place!

I often go back to that thread and read it. Just look for posts during the first week of June 2000!

There is a lot of good natured humor here and for the most part, less ego per post than might be expected.

I always enjoy the rough and tumble intellecual debates that we have here.

    An excellant site.

Thought there was room for an old "FSM" guy to weigh in here.....

About Jeron: an absolute sweetheart of a human being, whose positive attitude and friendly demeanor not only enrich those of us who know him, but help make this board a special place. I am SO looking forward to meeting Mr. Moore next week at the Williams concerts! Jeron - Love You, man.

    About the board:

I was involuntarily disconnected from the 'net for the past 10 days, due to the amazing confluence of a bad driver (who obliterated the phone junction box for my part of the apartment complex) and an electrical storm (part of the Monsoon season here - damned thing killed my DSL box!). LOTS has been going on, I see.

I, for one, am in no hurry to beat feet over to the new FSM board & leave this one behind. Through the kind of wishful thinking/revisionist history that is common in cases of sudden loss, a lot of my compatriots from that board seem to have minimized - or just plain forgotten - that the old board there had plenty of problems, too. Some of the nastier folks that have trotted through here for the last 6 months were regulars over at FSM. They did not spontaneously generate coincidental to the opening of this site! They were our burden over there for a while, guys. I for one have always been ashamed of their behavior; and I apologize for those offended.

Additionally, some of the same "Free Speech vs. Decorum" debates were happening there, and for the same reasons. There were attacks, rants, cliques, and xenophobia. Sound familiar? The net result (no pun intended) of minimizing these things is that the place has grown to be a veritable Shangri-La in the minds & memories of its defenders. This has, in turn, led to a lot of bolting for the door & self-congratulatory "Whoopie"-s over at the new site. To me, the following image is inescapable:

Our old house (the FSM board) was condemned, and we were evicted. In the rain. Some of us found our way to the warmth of this place - where we were greeted mostly with friendship and open arms - and we invited as many of our friends to come live here as we could. We had to stay on the floors and in the tub - there were so MANY of us! - until the place had soom room additions. We drank the wine, ate the chips, scared off some other houseguests, and put out our Clove cigarrettes on the floor. We didn't always wash our hands, ate whenever we wanted to, and wailed miserably when you just picked at the meals that we occassionally prepared.

After some (invisible to our eyes) remodeling, the old place has been reopened. And how do we repay our hosts? By bolting for the door (some vowing that they will not return), shouting "Freedom!" once inside the walls of the new place, and bitterly dismissing our hosts in a time of need.

    Nice.

The website's filters will not let me print what I feel about this.....but it comes from the south side of a mule.

Amongst FSM-ers, there has long been the feeling that there are not enough off-topic, philosophical, and/or intellectual discussions at the MM.com board. In my opinion, there is a bit of truth to that - sorry. I did observe, however, that when things DID reach those levels here, it was invariably an ex-FSMer that began the vituperation. Why bother stating an opinion if you're just going to get flamed for it? After all, this is NOT Rocket Science or The Future Of The World In The Balance. It's movies. And music. And - hopefully - community. If the "intellectually stimulating" discussions had folks ducking for cover (not from inability to converse, but from protection of your feelings), who is really to blame? Some of the very folks complaining the most bitterly about the lack of "rousing" discussions are the ones at the forefront of the Insult Wars (and the subsequent self-aggrandizement of the Why Must We Tolerate Censorship? whining).

A bunch of those folks have already landed over at the not-condemned FSM home. Including some that PeterK (wisely) showed the door to, and a self-exiled Man Of Masks. Some of my good friends, whom I consider to be very high-quality people, are there, too......but it is NOT Shangri-La.

I am more grateful than tongue can tell for the warmth and friendship I have found here. Even the folks that I had MET over at the FSM board - Brad, Marian, Joan, Rocco, Shaun - became my FRIENDS as a result of our interactions at this site. I have ALWAYS found this place to be a warmer and more hospitable place. I am happy that you let me hang around; and thankful that you took the time to know me & let me be known.

I have participated in Death. I have known Pain. I have Lost, many times. Nothing is more important to me in this existence than warmth and human contact.

I think I'll stay right here with y'all for a while, right here by the fireplace, in this fine and sturdy house that Peter has built for us. Later, we'll pick up all the Clove butts....and re-stock the larder....and put in some calls to those who were frightened away.

For now, I choose warmth. If you'll have me.

    Mr. Hatfield,

your post must have been the warmest, most heartfelt post I have ever read. The warmth and tenderness it generated in me, has rarly been generated by the mere reading of words. What you have written is a symphony in itself and I for one am extremly honored to be a member of a board where such human beings as yourself reside.

What a blessed soul I really am.

And I look forward to meeting you at the concert as well.

    Scott

Thanks, Scott, for the nice words. I can always count on warmth and gentility from YOU, as I have noted before. But I am really just a dude with too much time on his hands.

And too few fingers on them!

    So I can stay, then?

One need only read these posts to see the word "community" defined. Regardless of FSM's board's reopening, this site will survive because of how it diversifies. There are people here who call themselves brothers- there are even sisters. These are reasons this site deserves its accolades. Keep the good vibes coming, guys!

In the beginning, I came to these boards because of the talk about film music. Now, I come here because of the people.

The fact that I'm moving my "primary" home back to FSM has NOTHING at all to do with anything that could be wrong with this site. It's just that I started at FSM, and still feel it's "home". I will come here as often as I can, but unfortunately, I have to work, too.

Of course, the old FSM board was not perfect at all. We had hard times there like we had them here. I would apologize for our bringing some of the troublemakers along, but I also didn't invite them at FSM. I don't think the FSM board was more "brutal" than this one at times, except of course in it's very last stage, when it was nothing more but a battlefield.

I've always said how thankful I am that PeterK created this site. Not only did I learn much about movie music, I've also made a lot of friends. I've even talked to Mark Hatfield on the phone, something I would have never imagined before.

I'll come here as often as I can.

    Well,

Mark and everyone else, I might be overstepping my bounderies, but as far as I am concerned stay and stay forever. I am sure PeterK feels the same way, and everyone else although I would never presume to speak for them.

I feel very warm and cuddly inside. Let me go and play Soul Reaver...

Widescreen, I’m glad you posted this topic. I don’t think anyone can
match Mark’s eloquence or analogies. He clarified all that graces this site.
His message is a tough follow, but I’ll try.

For me, I enjoy the people. It amazes me how connected I have become
to many members of this Board, whether native or FSMers.
I genuinely care about them; heck, I just plain love some of them. Even done some adoption. I know that some of you post at 3 or 4 Boards,
which IMHO, is just super. That just expands our repertoire of friends.
This may sound corny or trite, but I think that basically the main journey
of our individual lives is simply the search for human connection, and this
forum has enriched and expanded our search.

I’m not really a provocatuer, and frankly in-house fighting disconcerts me. However, diverse or opposite opinions on our various
topics doesn’t bother me. I enjoy being educated. Members
bring unique and varying perspectives to soundtracks and composers.
I always have a notepad next to my computer. When someone recommends
a soundtrack in a movie, I pen it and rent it. If I don’t like it, my money is
saved. If it appeals to me, money disappears. Variable opinions and
tastes open my narrow world. My notepad list if full due to the differing
tastes of so many m.m. members.

Like Mark, I sometimes wish we had longer,
more in-depth discussions about music. I loved Howard’s “Capturer or
Creator” topic which taxed and exercised a lot of brain cells. I regret that
sometimes these types of topics die a rather early death. I have at times
felt embarrassed to post such topics. On the other hand, I have discovered
more recent composers due to the tastes of many of the members, and such
discoveries-some of which I like and some I don’t- have still enriched my life and expanded my taste.
I don’t care if you are 12 or 60, life-long learning is essential, and this
Board can be a gold mine for education. The nuggets are there if you just
    pick them up.

Thanks Widescreen for posting this topic. Too bad a few people are quick
to “red pen” all that can be wrong with ideas, tastes, and sites and forget
how wonderful and exhilarating a green pen or AFFIRMATION can be.

I'm so grateful for this site. It's kinda hard to find people who like film music. I mean try going into a store and go to the soundtrack section and actually find someone buying a score other than yourself. The majority of people I see in the soundtrack section (or "Movies and Shows") are those who prefer the dreaded "Songs inspired by" album. Now if Iwere to go to the rock section and see someone buying AC/DC I could probably strike up a conversation about it with that person. Here we have a chance to talk about our love for film music. I've met a fellow Ifukube fan in H Rocco. Found out there are quite a few score fans in Texas besides me. There have been some moments of hostility, but as I continue to state I think the majority of the people on this board are very nice and intelligent people. I'm grateful for PeterK for the oppertunity to have this forum. I've posted at FSM in the past, but never felt as welcome as I did here. No that is not a slam against FSM but just an honest opinion. I look forward to many more years here.
