CAN you spend a day WITHOUT listening to film music?

    No?

    Freak!

    Just kidding.

What WOULD you listen to? Classical music doesn't count, either, JJ. Damn cheater. For instance, I'm listening to Elliott Smith's latest album, Figure 8 (not a bad song on here, I say). As a friend's boyfriend likes to say, "he's McCartney's bastard child."

It won't kill you to leave film music "under the bed" for a day.

If any of you write that you're listening to NSYNC (or any other boy band that features some kind of a "number gimmick" or "misspelling gimmick" or "look-at-the-guy-with-the-hair gimmick"), I will ridicule you.

    Shaun

Well...it's been many years since I haven't had a day without film music!
But if I had to miss one day I'd probably listen to alot of Enigma albums (especially "Screen Behind the Mirror" thats my fav) And a little bit of Delerium.

I do have days like this, in fact.

    The Beatles (anything)

    "The Joshua Tree" by U2

    Gerry Rafferty (don't laugh!)

"Body Count" by Ice-T and company

"Straight Outta Compton" by NWA (fast and funny! although it peaks early)

the SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER soundtrack (is that cheating? Too damn bad, it's a nostalgia trip for me)

whatever that Echo & The Bunnymen/John Lydon tape is going to turn out to be (I'm getting tired of waiting, bud!)

Moby as well. Play has some great music on it. love th last 4 or 5 cuts.

The Cars! "Drive" is one of my favorite songs. I made a complete ass of myself trying to karaoke it a couple of years ago. I will never try that again. (I keep telling myself that, and yet somehow --)

    Oh, of course, THE DOORS!!!!

And Hikashu, led by my very good friend Makoto Inoue.

I saw Violent Femmes in concert in Rome about fifteen years ago, and found them cool. The album I subsequently bought did NOT have any of the stuff they performed there, though.

Listening to music is probably my minor way of being addicted to something. I listen to all kinds of music, although there isn't a day in remembrance where I haven't listened to film music.

My favorite group is Jars of Clay. Matchbox 20 isn't too far behind. The list goes on and on, yet after awhile film music comes back with a vengence. Always in a day's work.

    Hmm,,,.....

One day without film music, I'd definetly go with jazz. It's cool and relaxing. And listen to classic and modern jazz by the likes of Coltrane, Davis, Ellington, Corea, Baker, Jobim, Grusin, Ritenour, Metheny, Schifrin and more.

Attaboy, JJ! I have The Bends, too! Great stuff! I need to pick up OK Computer (it's one of those albums that all my friends have, so the need to purchase it isn't too great). U2 AND Radiohead this October, baby!

Still waiting for that new Roy Orbison album. Come on, Roy.....lazy ass!

And---jazz. That reminds me. You are all to go get Don Ellis' Electric Bath album, newly reissued by Sony Legacy. You won't regret it.

I'd go with absolutely anything by The Beatles.

The Art of Noise (the earlier the better)

    Shatner (classics only)

    Thompson Twins

    Steely Dan (anything)

    Tommy Dorsey

    Duran Duran

    Queen (greatest etc.)

    Howard Jones

    any 70's funk

... by the way, once while I was looking on Amazon for some old Duran Duran, and I saw the following:

Customers who bought titles by Duran Duran also bought titles by these artists:
    U2
    Depeche Mode
    Pet Shop Boys
    Jerry Goldsmith
    George Michael

I kid you not, and no cookies either! For a moment I believed in the potential transcendancy of demographics.

    Just for a moment . . .

Well, if I can't choose film music, and I can't choose classical...I usually end up choosing not to listen to anything at all since I invariably hear somebody else playing something I don't I have stacked on my wall.

AC/DC! I love "Who Made Who." But mentioning that one might break Shaun's rule, since that's nominally a soundtrack album (for MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE, but most of it wasn't written for the movie.) And I adore "Toys In The Attic" by Aerosmith. My father used to play hard rock music all the time. One of my better friends is amused to think that my getting interested in film music was actually my way of rebelling against Dad, since he played all the stuff most kids would normally play to rebel against the folks. I had to find SOMETHING he couldn't relate to!

Oh, I've got lots of other music in my collection; fairly dated though. A few picks...
ROCK: Camel, Red Rider, Yes, Santana, Peter Gabriel, INXS, etc.
BLUES: Stevie Ray Vaughn, I miss this guy so much
PROGRESSIVE: Steve Morse/Dixie Dreggs, Jean Luc Ponty
    NEW AGE: David Arkenstone, Cusco

Every so often I give my wife a break and put on a CD with a good old fashion 'beat'! Once a rock 'n roller, always a rock 'n roller... _Sc

I visited my brother in Cal. recently and heard a LOT of Beatles tunes while being driven around!

-Creedance Clearwater Revival (simply the best rock band ever. I usually need at least one of their cds where ever I go)
    -Blood, Sweat, and Tears
    -Radiohead
    -Travis
    -Blues Traveler
    -Dave Matthews Band
    -Eve 6

Some oldie intrumentals, Percy Faith, Coniff
and some New Age. There is one New Age I like
alot and can,t think of the name. Its by
Amin Bhata and is about space. Its a score
    waiting for a movie.
I am putting together a couple CDRs of just
my favorite songs, a real mixed bag. Everything from Drive and Rosanna to It will
be a good day tommorow and Blue.
I,ll throw in some KD Lang.

    I second your choices JJ.

The main non-score CD I'm listening to nowadays is PLAY by Moby. 'Everloving' is a great track.

    My favourites are -
Automatic for the people - REM
    The Bends - Radiohead
    Anything by Queen, Beatles
    Best of George Michael
    Blur
    Anything by The Prodigy

    N.B. Shaun -
tastes are obviously varied, but I thought OK Computer wasn't half as good as The Bends.
Except for 'Paranoid Android' of course.

NP - Shining Through - Kamen

Is this topic music exclusive? Because, ladies and gentlemen, I have an obsolutely overwhelming passion for audio drama. I have CD's, tapes, and mp3's of everything from classic radio shows like "X Minus One" and "The Shadow" to more recent productions like "Star Wars" and the BBC's excellent "Superman Lives!"

(If anyone's interested in classic radio drama mp3's, let me know on this thread and I'll give you some excellent websites where you can get them for free.)

Hmmm. Would "Video Game" soundtracks count? If so, I'd go for the soundtracks to MYST and Riven, the two greatest games ever (MYST III: Exile is on the way).

But if not (And I have a feeling, not). I'd have to go for some great Christian Bands.

"Five Iron Frenzy" is among my favorites.

and of course, the greatest band of incredible musicians I've yet heard:
    "Burlap to Cashmere"

Every now and then I pull out my "Aquabats" CDs and give 'em a spin in me CD player.

Mr. Reifinger, you've beaten me to the punch! (well, one I passed up, but thought about, anyway) I, too, love audio drama. Favorite is the BBC's Lord of the Rings with Ian Holm. The Star Wars series is great, and I enjoy X MINUS ONE as well as any fully dramatized, unabridged Shakespeare.

If you can find them, look for a series of Ray Bradbury stories dramatized in the early 80's. They're outstanding, published by Durkin-Hayes as "Paperback Audio", those single cassettes found on spinning racks on bookstores. SOUND OF THUNDER, THE VELDT, KALEIDOSCOPE, DARK THEY WERE AND GOLDEN EYED . . . wonderfully realized all. There are 12 (or an original 13) out there, two per cassette.

Hey, Thor, your German sentence was også perfectly right! Oh, except for one wrong letter, I just noticed: "ein besonderer Fehler". Sorry, I'm such a perfectionist, I always have to point out things like that. It's meant to be constructive criticism, I hope you don't mind. Anyway, your German is better than my Norwegian. All I can say by now is også filmkomponist.
