Tell me about this composer.
I know I should try to find Return to Oz, judging by all the comments about it. I know he did 2010 as well.today at work someone mentioned having seen a movie recently called The Conversation, which stars Gene Hackman (of course, I haven't seen it), music by David Shire.
And, I also noticed his name in the Saturday Night Fever credits. that's so weuhhd!
SO his name, has been popping up recently, and I realized I have nothing by him.
need the info...recommendations, availability, etc.

The Taking Of Pelham 123 is an amazing score
and now at last is released on CD by FSM.
I had a cassette copy of the score maded from a pal video, maded by me of course, and when I got the CD I was amazed by the excelent quality of sound.
This is one of my prefered scores.
Big band sound with row techniques.
Something like a jazzy Rosenman.posted 08-03-2000 08:40 PM PT (US)

THE TAKING OF PELHAM 1-2-3 may be the only CD of his currently in print (unless you count his one cue on SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER, and for the purpose of this discussion, I do not). 1-2-3 is also the very one that got me interested in his music, and I recommend it massively. Did you like Chris Boardman's score for PAYBACK? I hope Shire is collecting Boardman's royalties.By Shire's own reckoning, he didn't get to do very many big, melodic scores of the type that people on the various Boards tend to prefer. However, if you ever find his masterpiece RETURN TO OZ, don't waste a second getting it.
The sad and simple fact is, I don't think he's done that many movies that got albums -- he called a lot of them "brain surgery scores," which didn't require much music or much melody -- and as a consequence, there doesn't seem to be that much that's worth laying in. (Well, if YOU want his SEVEN DAYS IN MAYish scores for THE CONVERSATION or ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN, go ahead, but there ain't never going to be albums. Compilation albums, maybe, but there ain't a lot there.)

Shire composed wonderfull themes for movies like RIDE AT ENTEBE, THE CONVERSATION, ALL THE PRESIDENT´S MEN, STRAIGHT TIME.
He has made two great soundtracks that are available on CD and LP.THE TAKING OF PELHAM 123 is one of the best of all times. In my opinion it is one of the 20 best scores.FAREWELL MY LOVELY is an excelent jazz oriented score that was released only on LP format.
You can listen to Shire´s music in the promo CD he released 3 years ago.It is available in all the soundtrack specialty stores.

TAKING OF PELHAM 123 (Retrograde) comes highly recommended if you like slightly jazzier scores. Some people are put off by 12-tone music, but it creates a really tense atmosphere in this movie and works surprisingly well out of context. And that bassline is just so COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL...

Also, If You like to read music, You can found excerpts of the score of Pelham on the book "On the track" by Fred Karlin.

I think everyone should definitely rent The Conversation. In addition to a fantastic piano score by Shire, the film itself is a fantastic riff on Antonioni's Blow-Up and is one of Coppola's best films (and, in my opinion, Gene Hackman's best performance outside of The French Connection II).The final shot will haunt you for many days to come, aided immeasurably by the interplay between the diagetic and nondiagetic soundtracks...
