My dusty score of the month is HAWAII by
Elmer Bernstein. I took this score out to
clean it up from a poorly recorded CDR I did
a couple of moons ago. I had a lapse of memory on how good the score is and my
favorite of Bernsteins. The spoken prologue
with the score really adds alot of atmosphere
to go with the strong and lite themes and
the great drums spread nicely throughout.
This is not a nice quiet nights on the beach
score but a sweeping tone poem of harsh life
and a far away place and time.

logied, you are indeed a man of fine taste.

I brought out my own CDR transfer awhile back, and also remarked to myself about the atmosphere, etc. Good score. The narration is actually appropriate on that 2nd track, I think.

my recommendation yesterday was Jarre's Sunshine.

but for the month, I will go with Alex North's The Shoes of the Fisherman -- did I do this score last month, too? can't remember. anyway, it still stands as one of
my favorite North scores (not that I have all that many anyway). The main theme is grand and majestic, with that distinctive North harmony. good stuff.

hmm, no one else seems interested in the thread....

how about Obsession by Bernard Herrmann ? I have "the complete score" bootleg, and it's phenomenal. dark, dark, dark.

I'll wait with my recommendation until my CDNow order arrives. Unfortunately, 2 discs are still on backorder.

August is Bernstein month. Coming off of the homage-ful "Chicken Run", and already having plugged Bernstein Jr. & Sr.'s efforts on "The Rough Riders"--for August, I'll recommend Ryko's release of "The Great Escape", which, even featuring dialogue, is a fantastic and universally patriotic score. Probably one that should be in every fan's library as representative of not the "golden" or "silver" age of scores (I'm not even sure which one that falls into--somewhere in the phantom zone between gold and silver...) but as simply a great score by a talented and capable composer.

Do you like music on a grand, monumental, epic scale? You know, the kind of stuff fittingly played to coronate an all powerful king...

If so, check out "William The Conqueror" by John Scott.

I know JJ has been getting further acquainted with Scott's music. This CD is to John Scott's discography as "Chouans!" is to Delerue's; it's that good!

NP: William The Conqueror, and loving it!

Since the undervalued John Scott has been mentioned, and since there are wonderful discs of his of ALL kinds floating around ... why not JOHN SCOTT CONDUCTS HIS OWN FAVORITE FILM THEMES?

Why the HELL hasn't he -- or ANYONE -- come out with a full disc of THE PEOPLE THAT TIME FORGOT yet?

I almost wanted to recommend a couple of things that are only available as bootlegs, but he's such a nice fellow personally that I don't want to mention them. You'd find them anyway, you rapacious bastards.

I usually don't recommend Maurice Jarre, but here are two from 1985 that knocked me out: MAD MAX BEYOND THUNDERDOME (GNP/Crescendo, it could stand some expansion; the Tina Turner songs are pretty good!), and ENEMY MINE (Varese, not sure if it's still in print, but I keep seeing it in stores.)

NP: A GUIDE TO THE MARRIED MAN (Johnny Williams) (there is going to be SUCH a backlash against this release, I can hardly wait, but so far I'm having fun with it)

Yeah Mad Max 3 is great, though I still only have the badly misprinted l.p.!

My recommendation for this month is Mario Nascimbene's One Million Years B.C., the color in the orchestrations on this are great. A superb and very primal sounding score with a great stormy main theme!, and funny enough this is just what I'm playing right now.

I’d recommend a second glance at COUSINS by Angelo
Badalamenti. While I tend to enjoy bombastic, melodious
action music, I still love this calm, pleasant listen. I know when I
first saw the flick, I was entranced with the trumpet solo or
Maria’s theme played by Ted Danson in the movie. Also greatly
loved the melody in the main waltz. It is an easy, gentle,
melodic listen for tranquil days. Badalamenti’s Straight Story
    is another lovely score.

    Better late than never...

    • Score recommendation:
      Pan Tadeusz (Wojciech Kilar)
Liked Ninth Gate? I know some called it one of the best of 1999. Well, Pan Tadeusz is better (my opinion, of course). A light, fun, and diverse score by Kilar, certainly worth checking it out. Thanks go to Timmer for introducing me to this score.

    • Classical recommendation:
Exodus for orchestra and mixed choir (Wojciech Kilar)
A stunning, constantly building 22 minute work, a bit reminscent in structur of Ravel's Bolero. Was used for the Schindler's List trailer (it was this one, right?) and clearly inspired Williams' cue Schindler's Workforce. Again, thanks to Timmer.

    NP: Canto General (Mikis Theodorakis)
(And this is also VERY HIGHLY recommended to anyone who likes film scores and choral music. Some of you have certainly heard Theodorakis olympa piece on Williams Summon the Heroes album. Canto General is a stunning choral work with influences of Greek folk music, and among the best choral stuff I've heard. Get the recording of the premiere performance, it's simply awesome.)
