I just received an early mock-up of Michael Giacchino's new score to the Dreamworks video game MEDAL OF HONOR: UNDERGROUND. Even though I was at the recording sessions in June hearing the music mixed for the first time on CD is a wonderful experience.

Anyway, I would just like to inform you that this new score is possibly one of the best scores of the year. It's amazing what Giacchino has scored especially for a video game!

It's a more mature score from the previous MOH score. It contains a very serious and emotional NEW main theme which is a combination of a 60 piece orchestra, accordion, and 20 piece boys choir mixed over twice to create a mock 60 piece boys choir. It's sounds beautiful. Oh just incase you were wondering, the Nazi theme Giacchino created in the first score is back but the old MOH theme is excluded from this score. A new character, a new theme!

The action cues are mind blowing especially the 4 minute "Motorcycle Chase" which at the recording sessions where recorded in three separate cues which have been wonderfully mixed by Giacchino himself. And the finale track "Beneath The City" will blow your socks off!!! And there is a wonderful "cafe" like song called "Each Night He Comes Home To Me" which was written by Giacchino and game producer Scott Langteau which is a nice addition to the album.

In all, the 55 minute score will be well worth your money when it hits stores (I don't know a date) It really showcases this young composers talent and maturity and I have no doubt that Mr. Giacchino will be the next big Hollywood name. And I am talking as big as Williams and Goldsmith. He is that good.

By the way, on August 19th I will be presenting for the first time ever the entire Medal of Honor: Underground score on my radio show CINEMATIC SOUND with a 40 minute interview with Michael Giacchino I conducted during the recording sessions in Seattle. Visit my web page for more info.

    Thanks,

    Erik

    Oh man, I can't wait!

Medal of Honor was one of my favorite scores from last year. The action music was incredible, and I am looking forward to hearing more- but now with a choir! *drool*

Mr. Giachinno is definatly going to go on to better things. His Williams-like action pieces and great melodies make his game score stand out from the rest of the pack.

Anyone know when this cd will be out?

Actually, For whatever the song was called in preproduction, on the CD the song was called "The Road to Berlin"--(Also referred to by the "source" recording with the German announcer.)

There are two versions of it on the CD: a "clean" version (clear sound), and a "dated" version, which has album scratches and a slight bit of microphone hiss thrown in, to make it sound like a old recording. (Personally, I like the "dated" version", but it's all good.)

Besides a fantastic main theme, there is a terrific "Nazi" theme. Michael Giacchino has come as close to *emulating* John Williams without *imitating* him as anyone I've ever heard (and that beats McNeely and McKenzie.)

I can't really say anything that I haven't said before. Everyone knows how much I pushed "Medal of Honor" when it initially became available. I knew we were gonna get a sequel, though I wasn't sure when! It's great to know word is already getting out. I'll definitely be picking this one up (duh). Giacchino is one of several awesome composers in the field who deserve bigger and better assignments. Let's hope he and the others (ie. Jeremy Soule) get their breaks soon!

    Ditto, ditto, ditto.

Now if I just could remember his last name every time I refer to him...

Well, let me tell you. The new theme kicks major butt.

When you hear it, I think you'll love it, just as much as the original. I know I do. Even the Accordions sounds pretty darn cool IMO!

I am repeating nothing new, but I just wanted to add that I am very excited about this. I picked up the original MEDAL OF HONOR CD a few months ago and it has rarely been off my CD player. I am a huge fan and if the follow up score is half as good, we will have another classic on our hands...
