Another surprise windfall on Friday has led to my grabbing the following from the used bins:

THE PATRIOT (John Williams) (my favorite of the year so far)

HOLOCAUST 2000/SESSO IN CONFESSIONALE (Ennio Morricone) (I knew what I was getting with 2000, but SESSO surprised me with its weirdness and high quality. You could blow seven bucks on worse things. Anyway, I really wanted 2000.)

BLACULA (Gene Page) (disappointing! But I wanted something for William Marshall to sign if I get to meet him at the CULT MOVIES convention this coming October.)

THE WHISPERERS (John Barry) (not as good as its reputation, but maybe if I'd seen the film, I'd like it better) (this is the Ryko release with the enhanced features, none of which I've checked out yet)

FRANCESCO DE MASI: FILM MUSIC 2 (haven't listened to it yet, but my blind purchases of this composer haven't failed me yet, all two of them)

RINGO: IL CAVALIERE SOLITARIO (Francesco DeMasi) coupled with L'ULTIMO MERCENARIO (Bruno Nicolai -- haven't listened to it yet, but my blind purchases of Nicolai haven't failed me yet, all one of them)

(why does Tower Records' bargain bin always showcase so many Italian soundtracks? They're practically giving away some of the more obscure CAM titles.)

By Friday, I expect to have laid in HOLLOW MAN. As well, I believe there's something waiting for me at the post office. You'll be the second to know. (and third, and fourth, in whatever order you people read it, hey, it's not my job to keep track of the lot of ya)

Oh, I forgot to mention, the DeMasi/Nicolai disc includes a short suite from something called UNA COLT IN PUGNO AL DIAVOLO, by Gian Piero Reverberi. This isn't mentioned on the front or back covers. If I were Reverberi, I would sue. (Okay, the title IS mentioned on the spine. But how could they possibly leave a name as cool-sounding as "Reverberi" off the covers???)

I also forgot to mention finding a two-dollar cassette of Ry Cooder's ALAMO BAY. Doesn't seem like there's a CD in the offing anytime soon, so I figured, what the hell, go ahead and grab it.

well, I bought Hollow Man and Sunshine the day my grandmother died just before I heard the news, so I didn't a chance to listen to them until to day I rushed out so fast. hadn't even opened the wrapper.

Next up, I think I'm gonna hit up FSM for the new Williams CD.

Two more John Scott titles for me...
The Mill On The Floss: A low key, quaint, very English score for a quaint and very English story. A pastoral main theme(s) with the beautiful trademark orchestration and performances I've come to recognize in Scott's work.
To The Ends Of The World: Something heroic, celebrating expeditions to the poles. After having been completely astounded at the incredible grandeur of Scott's "William The Conqueror", another heroic score was required. Very satisfied with this one.
    _Sc
NP: The Mill On The Floss, 5/5 (more and more to hear with each listening)

Just got A Guide for the Married Man...good stuff. I'm finding I like these cool 1960's & 1970's scores a lot. Cheesy stuff like this one, The Omega Man, Rosenmans scores. good stuff.

Also got the Silva Essential Maurice Jarre Film Music Collection 2CD set. This may be their best compilation yet, and the best performed certainly. I suggest everyone try it out. I'm most impressed with the suite from Franco Zefirelli's (sp?)Jesus of Nazareth mini-series.

Well, this has been a real retro week for me too. I received the FSM "Guide to Married Man" and it's wonderfully put together--I still like "How to Steal a Million" more though...

Also received Michael Chertock's "Love at the Movies" Telarc disc.

    And bought "Hollow Man".

And yesterday while browsing in my favorite "used" cd store I managed with great excitement to pick up the following Chapter III releases!:

    Don't Make Waves / Penelope
    Kelly's Heroes / Cincinnati Kid
    Grand Prix / Ryan's Daughter

[all the other "2nd Wave" releases from this source were there, but I only have so much money!)

    NP: Kelly's Heroes

I went home to visit my folks, and since the local record store is closing up shop, I indulged myself even more heavily than usual. The crop of LPs I picked up there would please the Golden Age fans among us:

    SHOES OF THE FISHERMAN--North
    SOUTH SEAS ADVENTURE--North
    YOUNG LIONS--Friedhofer
    BOY ON A DOLPHIN--Friedhofer
    HAWAII--Bernstein
    FILM MUSIC OF D. TIOMKIN
    FILM MUSIC OF B. KAPER
    THE HINDENBURG--Shire
    YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN--Morris

And, just for Marian, GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY (Goldsmith)

I've also recently picked up THE PHANTOM MENACE (expanded), CHAPLIN, THE NATURAL, THE MUMMY, GUIDE FOR THE MARRIED MAN, and the LP of RETURN TO OZ.

Now all that remains is to listen to them all!

    well,

Today, I finally received a long-awaited package from Germany.

No, NOT the CDRs that Jens "I Dream about Jerry Goldsmith's long hair" Dietrich.

But I received 3 classical CDs containing music by an obscure Baroque composer named Nikolaus Betscher. excellent stuff, if you're inclined to like this sort of stuff, or even if you're not.

This month has been a busy one with regards to my usual spending habits (just trying to cash in all those "buy ten get one free" cards...

    - Gladiator
    - X Men (too much electronic filler)
    - M:I 2 (very disjointed score, I'll need closer listens, but dissapointing thus far)

    - Medicine Man (en route)
    - Chicken Run (ditto)
    - For Love of the Game (en route)

I'm thinking about buying these other ones:
