This movie was (and is) on Turner Classic Movies this evening. I had always wanted to hear what this supposed similarity between Korngold's music and John Williams' Star Wars.I must say. It ain't there. Okay, a couple notes in the melody may have the same intervals, but so what?
Anyway, I just wanted to say basically that King's Row was a very fun score. Are the original tracks available anywhere?

I think seven of the original tracks are included on the two-disc anthology, "Erich Wolfgang Korngold: The Warner Bros. Years," but I've read that the sound quality isn't too good, owing to the age of the source material. There's also the Gerhardt-conducted re-recording of the complete score. Both albums are available at www.amazon.com.

JJ,Oftentimes you will hear an excellent-sounding score with the movie (as excellent as might have been possible, considering the recording was made 70 years ago). However, producers look for the separate elements when preparing the score for release. Here's where the trouble lies. The film's final sound mix and composite prints received the best in care, while the separate elements were shoved into a warehouse and left to disintegrate. Just read the liners for Rhino's release of North by Northwest and you'll get the picture!

The Gerhardt-conducted recording (available from Varese) is excellent, although I think they could have put more track markers on it (it basically has side one of the LP as track 1 and side two as track 2).The title sequence has similarities to Star Wars, yes, but it is really Korngold's score to The Sea Hawk that was the direct influence on Williams' score for that film.
The Sea Hawk is also available from Varese, the Utah Symphony Orchestra conducted by Varujan Kojian; there is also a suite on the album of the same name from RCA that is conducted by Gerhardt. It would have been nice to have a full album of Gerhardt conducting this score, but the Kojian recording isn't bad at all, and it's the most complete legal release of this very enjoyable score.

The complete, original tracks ARE available. I'm not sure if it's a bootleg or a low-budget CD-R promotional (the latter, I've been reliably informed) but it spills over on to two CDs, along with the complete original tracks for Korngold's "The Sea Wolf." Good stuff.

The original recording of The Sea Hawk is also available, I keep seeing it in local stores. Don't know if it's a boot, it may be one of those semi-legal Tsunami releases. Anyway, I recently ordered the Kojian version, I'm just still waiting for it because that Prokofiev album Wedge recommended is still on backorder. For that same reason I don't have Coma/Logan's Run yet. Or Hollow Man. Or Secret of N.I.M.H.. Or Carlito's Way.

This threads make me quite envious. So JJ sits down to watch a film. Ole'.
He likes the music, he asks a few questions, and he'll probably swipe out his visa and order the bootleg from some nifty website.Where do you guys get the money from? Ok, you work, and I'm a student so I live on peanuts, but when you guys started posting your collections the other day, I was flabbergasted (Love using that word)
I was ashamed to put my collection up. I started collecting scores on the 6th of January 1999, and according to my parents I already have wasted way too much money. But I have only around 30 to 40 soundtrack CDs.
Plus, to put the cherry on the cake, it's quite a hassle getting CDs when you're in Malta.
I will now stop mumbling coz you all aren't at all interested.NP - Dangerous Beauty

Camillu, there are also problems involved when your collection grows. Suddenly you have all this stuff and not the time to play it! And my collection is only somewhere near 200 by now.

just for the record, I probably would not order the bootleg if one exists.I'd buy the real thing...
BTW -- Camillu, trading for scores is often a neat way of getting some rare stuff. Saves money (except when I go buy the original anyway if I find it).

JJH - But what do I trade? There's nothing in my collection I want to get rid of (except maybe Godfather I)BTW - since the post above my collection grew by about 3% coz I went to a clearout sale and got:
North - Shaiman
Shining Through - Kamen
Billy Bathgate - Ishamfor the equivalent of around $10 total
The latter two are on Milan records. Does anyone know if they're out of print?
