Finally managed to grab a used cd of "Dragonheart" which is very good. Keeping my eye out for "Gettysburg" which I have also heard parts of on compilation discs.

This week I found "Anaconda" for $2 which was a kind of watered down Goldsmith score but still better than JG's "Deep Rising".

Are there any other suggestions of Edelman works? Top 5 say?

    Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story
    Angels in the Outfield
    Six Days | Seven Nights
    Tall Tale
    Passion of Mind
    Daylight

All of these are good if you enjoy Dragonheart and Gettysburg. Especially Dragon - which gets a little repetitive, but well worth it. Great score. Unfortunately, a lot of folks don't like Edelman. Oops, allow me to rephrase: They like Edelman's work, they just don't like how he decides to write it (ie. arrangment, orchestration, etc). I'll be the first to say that I love Edelman (not unconditionally, but for the most part). None of the things mentioned above bother me at all - I can still enjoy his music to the fullest extent! I suppose it's one of my guilty pleasures...

    Hope this helps.
    Jeron

PS - TimT and H Rocco, you better not say ANYTHING about me liking everything. That's just a cop out and excuse for not admitting that I have a higher appreciation for a greater number of things! hehe

Jeron, you just have a higher appreciation for everything. We all wish you'd just stop it! The rest of us are TIRED of being exposed as the unwashed barbarians we happen to be, awright?

NP: THE PATRIOT (I quite like this) (I bet you like it too, Jeron! Well, that just wrecks it for me! I'll have to look at having myself rendered surgically deaf again ...)

I like bits of DRAGON, which I do own, but the only Edelman CD I'd REALLY like to have -- or maybe just the cue that they use in every other trailer -- is COME SEE THE PARADISE. It's quite amazing that that one flew under EVERYONE'S radar at the time (1990 or so?), except for music editors.

Thanks, seeing as I have spent a wopping $8 for both of the Edelman scores I have currently, it sounds like I have to just watch a bit in the used bins for when they do clearance...that's how I started grabbing up James Newton Howard scores late last year.
[And here I'd thought I would get a bunch of "Deep Rising" defenders!]

No, sakman, we're savin' those guys for the "Underrated Goldsmith" thread should it ever pop up. Edelman's dramatic scores are wonderful, as are his comedy scores.

Here are some of my favorite in the latter category; all titles are unavailable unless otherwise noted:

THE CHIPMUNK ADVENTURE (one track on the soundtrack CD, but a great one)
    TWINS
    TROOP BEVERLY HILLS
    GHOSTBUSTERS 2
    KINDERGARTEN COP (Varese)
    DROP DEAD FRED
    THE DISTINGUISHED GENTLEMAN
    GREEDY
THE MASK (TriStar Records - Screen Archives Entertainment might still have it)
    BILLY MADISON
    SHANGHAI NOON

I think Randy Edelman is one of the most under rated composers today and doesn't get the attention that he should.I love his music from Dragonhart and The Brue Lee story and also I don't know if many ppl remember but he also wrote the music for NFL on NBC. It is one of my favorite theme's.But since football is no longer on NBC rather on CBS the theme is no longer used .I loved it though it reminded you of a cold snowy Sunday in December and also it reminded you of football.

I beg to disagree with you there Vladimir, he's the most typecasted composer in Hollywood. Plus his synths get really annoying after a while, with the exception of Dragonheart for which they work beautifully. I guess the reason his work has really slacked off is because he doesn't have a real rock-solid orchestrator like Jerry Goldsmith, Alan Silvestri, or John Williams have. Note that is his best scores 1989-1994, mainly because he had the late Grieg McRitchie orchestrating them. He was the one who made all his scores a hundred times better than they are as he did for scores by John Barry, Lee Holdridge, and mainly Basil Poledouris. He made Edelman's scores sing with memorable melodies like Rocco pointed out trailer staple Come See The Paradise, Dragon, Last of the Mohicans, Ghostbusters 2 to name a few. I think like the guy don't get me wrong, but I think he has to change something in his style. A new orchestrator would help. But here are my favorite scores by R.E.

    The Quest
    While You Were Sleeping
    Down Periscope
    Gone Fishin'
    Quick Change
    Diabolique
Indian In The Cupboard (Replacing the late Miles Goodman's rejected score)
    Shanghai Noon
    Ghostbusters 2
    Kindergarten Cop

I have a copy of The Mask if anyone's interested in buying let me know.

Dragonheart is his only score I know. I bought it unheard because of the high praise I kept reading at the FSM board nearly 2 years ago. And when I first heard it, I was stunned. I still think it is one of the most beautiful scores ever composed. Yeah, the synths are annoying, because there's no reason (at least I don't see one) why they are used instead of "real" instruments. But the score is so beautiful that, although I'd like to chance the synth thing, it doesn't really matter.

While You Were Sleeping is one of the nicest scores for a romantic comedy out there. Playful, cheerful, heartbreaking, and above all light as a fall breeze. I know, it sounds a bit flowery, but it isn't. It's an excellent score by Edelman. My favorite track is 4 on that disc.

"The Courier" from Last of The Mohicans rivals Trevor Jones' theme. Check it out.

It's a real shame there was no release of his GHOSTBUSTERS II score, it was very well done IMO.

Yes!! I love his score for Ghostbusters II. I wonder what the chances are of a release in the future? Chapter III? Seems like Ch. 3 is the answer to everything!
