Should I pick up Wolf by Morricone?

I found it in a used bin but am uncertain. I have yet to complain about a Sony Calssical release and Morricone is held very high in my esteem. However, I bought Bugsy blindly and regretted it.

I only found 2 reviews - Filmtracks tore it to shreds, but Moviewave praised it to high heaven.

So, dear friends, the decision is in your worthy hands....

Ask Cole... or e-mail him @ galliumflux@aol.com. He's the "Wolf" expert. Also... Gae is knowledgable on this one, too... I wouldn't be surprised if he responded right after me. Cole highlighted only a couple tracks while I was visiting in Nashville. I was impressed! But for the rest, well - I can't attest.

I didn't care for it, but then didn't much like the movie either. I find a lot of latter-day Morricone to be kind of wandering and overly romantic, not the kind of quirky stuff that I prefer from the 60s and 70s.

NP, ironically, SESSO IN CONFESSIONALE by Morricone, a movie I've never heard of, but which comes on the second half of the score I did want, HOLOCAUST 2000. It's extremely strange and daring, full of the kind of experimentation that he just doesn't do anymore.

Camillu, I've got a question for you first...have you seen the movie? If yes, did you like it? I always feel that soundtracks are more powerful if you have an affinity for the movie also. Anyway, from my point of view I agree with Moviewave...I love the movie and the score...so I would recommend getting it. Its quite dissonant in parts but has also got some lovely haunting evocative melodies ( almost Debussyesque!!). Some people have criticised the recurring synth motif as annoying but I've always loved it. Anyway, if you do buy it, I'm sure you'll enjoy it!
    Happy listening Gae NP Goldfinger

Personally, I did not care for Wolf, although it does have one cue, a chase cue (maybe it's called chase), that was pretty good. But one cue does not a whole score make. You'd probably be better off saving the cash to put towards something else.

ok. here i am. i am the expert on wolf. the score to wolf was one of the first 10 soundtracks i ever got. it took me a while to completely figure this score out....because i will admit that at fist there were parts of the score that turned me off (like the synth motif) but after years of growing up i have come to love wolf. the track called "the dream and the deer" is worth the price in a used bin alone. the track has an overwhelming build up of strings that will blow you away........get it for that alone....the counterpoint is amazing.......i will write a more lengthy analysis of the score a little later.

Thanks for your help. Are there loads of synthesisers, coz I personallly love the fully orchestral Morricone. Or is it more along the lines of his romantic scores, such as Cinema Paradiso, The Mission and 1900 which I love?

Nope, haven't seen the film, but have made a mental note to do so. After all, Jack's a great actor and Michelle Pfeiffer is, well, herself.

    Thanks for your help.

Sorry Cole, but I am the expert on Wolf!! Camillu, honestly, just buy it! I tried to find some sound clips for you to hear but cant find any at the usual haunts so it must be quite hard to get. All the more reason to whip it up quick. Is it Cd also? I only have it on tape and I'd love to have it on CD. Buy it.... and if you dont like it I'll buy it off you honestly, or trade it with you...I love it! It is all orchestral with just the synths playing the recurring 4 note motif throughout the score. Most of the score is exquisitely dreamlike and creepy in a lot of parts. "Chase" is a highlight action cue with a very dissonant motif on the wind instruments, but check out the powerful brassy triplet figures, they will knock your socks off. The Dream and the Deer music as Cole mentioned is an incredibly emotive track with the theme building up with swirling strings upon strings to the climax. Wolf is a very complex score texturally, quite modernistic in part but a treasure if you stick with it. It is nothing like any of the other Morricone scores mentioned above but uniquely different! Anyway, hope this helps and seriously if you dont like it I'll trade it with you! Gae NP TWINE

    Gae, you've got me.

When it comes to convincing, you beat my wallet hands down.

I'll let you know my reactions, but considering what I've heard I'm confident I won't be considering a trade.

Thanks a million. You guys are better than any review site!

NP - Alex North Compilation. Picked it up from a sale today - it's music from Bad Seed, Streetcar, Spartacus, Zapata and Misfits - and it's the first Alex North music I'm ever going to hear. Here goes.

Well it finally arrived in the mail yesterday, and despite being in the same box as First Knight and Sleepy Hollow, I was so curious I popped it in the player first.

Well, the recurring synth motif is definitely irritating at first listen, but otherwise the music is quite evocative. The chase music is nice, and I'll now go hear the 'Deer' piece coz this thread reminded me about it.

I think it needs a number of listens to grow on me. I'll try and watch the film sometime soon.

It's definetely Morricone though, so I doubt I'll be up for a trade

    Thanks again.

NP - Nothing yet, CDs upstairs.

The synth arpeggio in Wolf is a motif that was also used to great effect in Mission To Mars. I think it's pretty nifty myself. If you weren't annoyed by that synth in Mission To Mars, then the one in Wolf shouldn't bother you.

    Oh never mind...

    You already bought it.

Why'd you go off and do a crazy thing like that?!
