Is this score any good? I'm getitng into the Bryan Singer movies, just watched "Usual Suspects" and WOW. And i loved "X Men" and I've seen "Apt" I remember the music being creepy.

    Anyone got any info?

I thought this movie was pretty smart, actually an improvement on the original Stephen King story (which he released as one of four "novellas" collected under one cover -- your average King "novella" is a "novel" from any other author. Three of the four published in "Different Seasons" have now been filmed: THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, STAND BY ME, and, yes, APT PUPIL. "The Breathing Method" is probably too dreary and derivative to merit an adaptation.)

Anyway, the Ottman score for APT PUPIL ... (here comes Mr. InSanDiego after me again ... I'll SEND you the Excedrin, okay?) -- simply put, except for THE USUAL SUSPECTS, which was very much a pastiche -- a GOOD pastiche, but still a pastiche -- I haven't been that impressed with Ottman's subsequent work. He's certainly competent, but I just haven't been impressed. And let's admit it: THE USUAL SUSPECTS is made up of bits and pieces of scores as various as BASIC INSTINCT, SNEAKERS, and even JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH. Ottman's borrowed from the best, but how much does he really have to say as a composer? He's a sensational film editor, that's for sure, and now he's crossed over to becoming a director. Perhaps that's his future. Perhaps he'll be the new John Carpenter. I wish him all the best, he clearly has talent to burn, but I just wonder in what direction he'd be wisest to shove the flames.

I think Incognito, Snow White:TOT, and Goodbye Lover are his best.

    Especially Incognito.

    Let's see here:

    1) The Usual Suspects - Crime drama/thriller
    2) Incognito - Character Study/thriller
    3) Snow White - fantasy/thriller
    4) Apt Pupil - drama
    5) Cable Guy - Dark Comedy
    6) Goodbye, Lover - dark comedy/thriller
    7) Lake Placid - horror/thriller
    8) Fantasy Island - television drama
    9) Urban Legends - horror/suspense/thriller

Am I missing something? It seems to me as if John not only has scored for all different types of genres, but has imbued them all with a style and classical sense that the budgets didn't warrant.

John Ottman is a voice to be reckoned with and I look forward to any and all music he creates in the future (as well as any film he chooses to direct...perhaps the enxt X-stallment?).
