This has probably been done before, but with Hollow Man coming out, it has got me thinking things Goldsmith and since I don't collect his music (I only have a few of his scores, I'm a Williams and Horner man), the question is, Which is Goldsmith's best score?
I'm talking all-around best encompassing every aspect, in the film, away from the film, construction, all of it.
I guess for me it comes down to Patton, Star Trek: The Motion Picture or Planet of the Apes.
I know it's tough to pick one, so if you can't pick just one, try and narrow it down to his top three.

NP - Boswell's Midsummer Night's Dream (I love the music for Shakespeare films)

I just wrote this very thing elsewhere nearby. But here we go again: I always say: PAPILLON; STAR TREK - THE MOTION PICTURE; and FIRST BLOOD.

So many others that are just as good, though.

NP: MAGIC (as heard on the original SPFM tribute from 1993 -- Mr. G signed this for me in Detroit! I'm still thrilled to so many bits that I haven't finished picking up all the parts of me yet!)

I guess my absolute favorite is Star Trek TMP, closely followed by LEGEND and THE FINAL CONFLICT.

But ohhh SOOOOOOO many to choose from

    NP : nought

I never say an actual favorite of Goldsmith's, I usually say: (as from the movie Office Space when Michael Bolton 'not the singer' is asked which Bolton song is his favorite)

    "I don't know. I guess I like em all."

But as far as a score I really, really like? I'm thinking "Twilight Zone: The Movie."

You want me to choose just one? That's so unfair. Okay, then I'll go with The Omen, but I'll have changed my mind by the time I hit the return key.

    Goldsmith's best? Easy:

    STAR TREK - TMP
    LEGEND
    ALIEN
    PLANET OF THE APES
    ISLAND IN THE STREAMS
    UNDER FIRE
    LIONHEART
    POWDER
    LA CONFIDENTIAL
    THE OMEM
    THE FINAL CONFLICT
    OUTLAND
    POLTERGEIST
    GREMLINS
    TOTAL RECALL
    RAMBO II
    THE BLUE MAX
    FREUD

    The rest come in second.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture, hands down, the finest score Goldsmith has ever written. Alien comes in at second for it's strengths.

Ok, I know this is difficult, but so far it seems that Star Trek: TPM is winning. But hey, what about The Omen? It remains Goldsmith's only Academy Award winner. Does that mean it is the best or that it was just his year when he won.
No one's mentioned Planet of the Apes much either. Come on, that ram's horn and dissonance, how could you go wrong?

    Keep em comin' LOL!!!!

NP - what else, Planet of the Apes

I don't know anything about this but if I were one of those Purist college boy types I'd probably type these for pushing the composer past the brink and opening hitherto locked territory:

    Lonely Are the Brave

    Under Fire

    Planet of the Apes

    Star Trek 1

    Total Recall

    The Illustrated Man

    Music For Orchestra

    Patton

    The Wind and the Lion

    The Final Conflict

    Basic Instinct

    A Patch of Blue

The Artist Who did Not Want to Paint

    The Boys From Brazil

......Hollow Man has all the chops but I haven't fully absorbed it enough to know for sure, haven't been exposed to the film etc to make a cheap review

awright, other people are throwing in more titles, so I'll just toss ten more atcha (picked almost at random from his long list of scores that fall into the "phenomenal" category more than they do the "superb," "excellent" or "damned amazing" arenas -- what can I say, perhaps I'm not fully objective -- ) :

    MASADA
    100 RIFLES
    UNDER FIRE
    THE SWARM
    CAPRICORN ONE
    EXTREME PREJUDICE
    ISLANDS IN THE STREAM
    POLTERGEIST and POLTERGEIST II
    THE REINCARNATION OF PETER PROUD

(Looking over this list again, I'm struck by the man's incredible versatility. Look at the range of genres and subjects just in those ten. And except for THE SWARM, none of them are terrible movies, either. Maybe not 100 RIFLES, which I haven't seen, but most are decent to pretty good.)

Can hardly wait to hear HOLLOW MAN ... perhaps I'll grab it Friday.

My two favorite Goldsmith scores, and have been for many years now, are:

    1. Poltergeist
    2. Under Fire

and close behind 65 more. Best, John.

My 2 cents (in random order as per usual):

    BLUE MAX (hardly mentioned. Why?)
    ALIEN
    RAMBO II
    LEGEND
    POLTERGEIST
CAPRICORN ONE (my neighbours must hate that main theme by now)
    THE SWARM
    PATTON

I cut my teeth on Goldsmith’s westerns. I’m surprised more haven’t been
mentioned. It was probably most of his western scores that lead me to
film music. He began with the lovely and rousing Lonely Are the Brave.
Also love his Bandolero, Take a Hard Ride, Rio Conchos, 100 Rifles,
Breakheart Pass, Wild Rovers, Hour of the Gun, Stagecoach, and many
others. I still hope he’ll score another western in the next few years.

Joan, I really like all those western scores too. Just too many good ones to put at top. The two I listed are my favorites, but 65 more are right behind and close. Best, John.

Chinatown, Patton and Islands in the Stream would be my top three, and I would add Bandalero as my favourite western score of his - and because it was the first Goldsmith soundtrack I bought!

I don't think Goldsmith's ever composed a score that I would classify as "good." The only possible exception to that statement would be his unreleased score for "Flashdance," which even Goldsmith himself described as "pretty f*ckin' good."

    Gremlins
    King Solomons Mines
    Rudy
    The Mummy
    The 13th Warrior
    The Haunting

These choices are based on the CDs I own. There might be some better ones out there but I can't judge a score without hearing it.

Based on my choices, could you also tell that '99 was a good year from Mr. Goldsmith?

Hi, everybody! This is my first post on this website, which I just found today!

    Good topic; Goldsmith #1!

    LEGEND
    Chinatown
    The Wind and the Lion

    NP, The Song of Bernadette

*Does anyone know if there is a video or dvd in Europe/elsewhere of Legend that uses the original score instead of the replacement?

Isn't there an upcoming LEGEND "Director's Cut" DVD that uses both the Goldsmith and the Tangerine Dream scores on alternate ISO tracks? I seem to remember reading something about that here a couple of months back. Or was that one of my weirder dreams that coincidentally didn't involve hedgehogs, C&C Cola (CANNED, not bottled) and a pair of green-painted anvils festooned with glued-on cotton balls?

There are VHS copies and laserdisc copies of the Goldsmith-scored version in both Europe and Japan; these versions aren't really Scott's preferred cuts, and include little bits of Goldsmith's PSYCHO II, as well.

I'd be curious to see Scott's "final" version of the piece, especially with Goldsmith's score COMPLETELY intact, and minus the embarrassing lifts from PSYCHO II (the fault of editor Terry Rawlings, not Goldsmith, obviously.)

NP: THE PATRIOT (there were far too many lifts from PSYCHO II in this one as well! I swear, doesn't anyone try to temp with anything else?)
