Dan Goldwasser from Soundtrack.net, who just posted a message on rec.music.movies, mentioned that he has learned from reliable sources that Howard Shore has been chosen to score all 3 Lord of the Rings films.

I heard this as well, but from another friend. I'll ask Dan about it personally (as to where he got his info).

My thoughts: I can't wait! This is the kind of project Howard Shore needs. He's new and inventive - and heck, he writes good music. We've never seem him in "Fantasy/Adventure" mode, so I think we could all very well be in for a great treat.

Kyp, you're just upset because Horner didn't get it. I could have told you he wasn't going to get it. Give Howard Shore a chance... you may be pleasantly surprised.

    Howard Shore? The experimentalist?

    Two words:

    Too cool.

Howard Shore, hm? Wow, that really surprises me. I'm not disappointed at all, just surprised. Shore could pull off something pretty cool for this. (Supposing, of course, that it's actually true.)

Well, for me, personaly I would still like to see Kilar for this project, but Shore IS a superb and more than capable composer!, I would look forward to this more than if it was the usual Williams,Goldsmith,Horner et al!
My top choices for scoring this film would be in order....
    Wojciech Kilar
    Basil Poledouris
    Carter Burwell
John Barry (yeah, you read that right!...John Barry)
    Howard Shore
    Chris Young
    James Newton Howard
    John Scott
    David Whitaker

NP : Thomas Crown Affair - Michel Legrand

FINALLY someone saw my previous post and hired Shore!!

If you have ever heard his Dogma score, you'd get a good grasp on just what this man is capable of.
And if you have NEVER heard Dogma, good gosh-a-mighty, why not?!?

Also check out his Philadelphia; has a few exquisite moments.

(but Robert Folk) still would have been an excellent choice!)

JJH is right. Dogma is an awesome score with excellant "God" music. He could do a fine job and let's face it, it will be very difficult to get a big name composer to sign up for a project this long. They just don't need the hassle.

If this is indeed true, it would be a good choice.

And if anyone here has doubts, check out his score to "Looking for Richard", this trilogy is in very good hands.

Howard Shore shoots and scores. I'm with this one all the way. Ford thanks so much for pointing out his brilliant Looking for Richard score. Wow!! this is nothing short of a masterpiece. I picked it up on a whem four years ago and I love it. Love it Love it. Shore is definetly one of Hollywood's most underappreciated and underrated composers. I mean this guy just pulls rabbitts outta his hat all the time. Just listen to his scores to M.Butterfly, The Game, Seven, Silence of the Lambs, White Man's Burden, Truth About Cats And Dogs and Analyze This. And that'll show how versitile this guy really is. I'm really looking forward to his upcoming scores to The Yards and The Cell, which probably a warm up to the this trilogy.

An interesting choice. The only score I have of Shore's is THE FLY, which I love. I'm anxious to hear him on a grand scale. I'm sorry I don't think Horner could do anything new in terms of coming up with something fresh that this trilogy would require. I think he reached his peak years ago and is on the downward side of it. IMHO of course.

you won't know the real range of Howard Shore until you hear his Videodrome.

    Certainly a wacked-out experiment.

Nah. I doubt it. Rumours. I'll wait for the official green light.

Besides, I don't think he's right for this saga, although I recognize his originality and uniqueness (AND versatility). His score would probably be rejected. *ducks*

Jeron, you know what was going on with me that night.

Nuff said, but I hope Shore pulls it off and I doubt Peter Jackson would just pick a composer, I am sure he has spent his share of hours finding one.

Howard Shore is very underrated, his abilities are huge (NAKED LUNCH - LOOKING FOR RICHARD - M. BUTTERFLY)
    but
ELFMAN would have been the better choice...

Poledouris is IMO alright, concerning LOTR he´s too `usual`, just compare SLEEPY HOLLOW with STARSHIP TROOPERS and listen...

Spango...not trying to flame things up?....Right!
Poledouris 'usual'?, The man has already expressed a wish to score this film, I think he would come up with something monumental for LOTR, and he's one of only a handfull of people who's right up to the job of handling a big trilogy of flicks like this.
'USUAL'....thats Danny (the usual) Elfman!, He'd batter out the same tired old cauldron of nothingness in search of a tune that he always does (with the exception of the very good Sommersby).

If it got confirmed as Elfman for LOTR, My head would un-screw, bounce once on the sidewalk and explode showering the town in chocolate chip cookies!

Anyways it don't matter as I just heard it confirmed that Eric (its in safe hands with me) Serra has got the LOTR gig.....SO THERE!!

Poledouris wants to do it? What are they waiting for!?

But I think Shore could do a great job, too. I'm not very familiar with his work, but from what I know, he seems to be the kind of choice Rosenman was for the animated movie.

We'll see. It can't be long before something gets official now, can it? Only 1.5 years to go for #1. Ok, that's a LONG time for a score composer, but they obviously take a lot of time for the whole trilogy, so why not give the composer a little longer than usual to work?

I Have no problem with Poledouris, Elfman, Shore, Ottman or even a big name. But the more time that they can give the composer the better.

With an epic like this, it will not be enough just to score the scenes does or the emotional rollercoaster, Whoever does these films need to develop some overall themes to link the films and then work them into the individual scenes. That takes time. Get someone under contract and let them get to work. There are a lot of characters and places that need to be linked thematically. So let's get to it!
