Badalamenti is one composer that I feel is somewhat underrated. he is rarely mentioned in this board.Having recently heard some of his work on Twin Peaks on the Bravo network (as well as his new agey theme for Inside the Actor's Studio), Arlington Road, and the Straight Story, I can say that this man has a grasp on what electronic music can be, and should aspire to be.
thanks to Jeron, I have heard a 7-minute suite from The Beach, Badalamenti's latest.
I'm ordering it right away. Tremendous main theme (which, by the way, is orchestral).
Bravo, Mr Badalamenti.
See? there IS life beyond Williams and Goldsmith!
BTW -- if you don't have The Straight Story yet, WHY NOT!?!?!!? Great film, great introspective score.

Yes! Badalamenti is great! Have you heard his score to The City of Lost Children? If not, you should. It's quite soft and subtle but very effective. There is a tragic atmosphere throughout, but it is still done gorgeously. If you've enjoyed his work so far, this is probably one to get. There's a theme in there that just makes me melt. The soundtrack to the Twin Peaks show is fairly good also. The main theme and the love theme are really good, but they are the only reasons to get the album. The rest is not worth it.
And I have heard the Inside The Actor's Studio theme as well. Badalamenti can use synths to a great extent, making good music without a cheap sound.
A wonderful composer.

i have been counting the dys since i saw the movie for this score to come out. it is amazing. in all honesty i have to put it in the top 5 scores of the year. it is so amazingly well done ...the electronis elements are incredible and fresh and original and exciting. the orchestral parts are lush and romantic. i have said this before - but - the main theme reminds me of barry.......if you love a good lush romantic barry theme then track 2 on the cd will blow you away.......as well astracks 4 and 5...in all 3 of these tracks the theme is done in wonderfully diverse ways. and the theme is intricately interwoven throuought the entire score. the action stuff is awesome and creates incredible tension on a huge orchestral and electronic palate. there are some badass drum and bass beats throughout the score if you like that stuff in Xmen or craig armstrong or arnold's TWINE. its a good crossover score.... i.e. if you like electronics then this will get you into the orchestral side and if you like orchestral this will get you into the electronics via a non-Zimmer approach. it rates amazingly on both the "well composed" as well as the "CMS" scales. pick it up. you WILL NOT be disapointed.

What do you mean, Tim? and Scott, I'm glad you are getting this. It really is an excellent cd. It plays more like an album, actually. Each cue has it's own special feel to it... kinda neat. Not unlike X-Men (format), though a score drastically different in nature. Thematically rich, lush, and beautiful. Actually, I'd say this is the perfect companion album for Mark Mancina's "Return to Paradise."Anyway, gotta get back to work. Later guys! And Tim, once again... clarify what you said!

Well I mean...it's not all that. And I find it interesting that most people (ecxept you)actually like it.
And I know of music better than this, that I liked but noone else cared about.NP- Jeron's Snow Falling on Cedars Suite

Tim, when you 'know' of better music, are you referring to your OPINION of "better music?"And is "better music", in your opinion, the works from Mediaventures?
Nothing wrong with that...
My personal OPINION is that Badalamenti is a better tunesmith at utilizing synthesizers or orchestra than the whole Mediaventures gang.

..ok perhaps I need to rephrase myself.
I have scores that I really like but have heard alot of negative things about them from other people ie....Instinct,Iron Giant,I Dreamed of Africa (noone said that was bad just noone likes it as much I do). When I first heard The Beach I was thinking it's got a nice theme but noone's gonna like it that much. But I guess I was wrong.
Oh and what gives you the idea that I'm some crazed fan of MV?

Just a hunch.
You see, Tim? This is what happens when you post only one small sentence on a topic. People will jump all over you and make you expand it into a novel.Besides, there are so many people here with different opinions. Of course many people may hate one score but like another which you personally think is inferior. Really, I wouldn't have it any other way.

Oh and what gives you the idea that I'm some crazed fan of MV?I will say this for Tim - he's not a crazed MV fan... just a crazed Zimmer fan. And I respect Tim's liking to Zimmer, simply because he appreciates the softer, unappreciated side of Zimmer's music... probably more so than the harder side that appeals to so many. Gosh, I remember the first time Tim played for me "The House of the Spirits." I had never heard of it - and it captivated me. I picked it up while visiting Cole in Nashville, and boy am I glad I did. And that's all thanks to Tim's dedication to spreading the good word about Zimmer's work that otherwise would go unnoticed.
Tim, it looks like you've met your match. Al seems to call your shots just as good as you call mine! You two remind me why I enjoy conversing w/ everyone here so much. I love you guys, this is great.

This score sounds half John Barry, half Eric Serra....for a Badalamenti representation, it's pretty decent.

Was innocently cruising around on-line last night, minding my own business.....Jeron finds me. We chat. He sends MP3 of a suite from THE BEACH. I must now purchase. Post-birthday checkbook screams.

Love ya, Jeron.
