If anyone else is going to be around Edinburgh during the Festival in mid-late August, you would probably be interested to now that Carter Burwell will be visiting the Edinburgh International Film Festival, to give a talk :" Synopsis
What makes a great film soundtrack? Carter Burwell knows and he's goingto share his secrets with an audience this year. If you're unaware of his credentials try these: he composed the scores for all the Coen brothers' films, Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, The Hudsucker Proxy, The Big Lebowski, Barton Fink and Fargo. That's not all; his credits also include previous Festival premieres Velvet Goldmine and Rob Roy, and more recently Being John Malkovich and High Fidelity. Impressive? Well, Burwell's a vet; he is as prolific as he is diverse, having composed music for everything from horror fantasies to romantic comedies. His skill is to create just the right mood in a consistently unconventional way. This makes Burwell one of the industry's most sort after film composers. Come hear why from the man himself. "More info & bookings are here : http://www.edfilmfest.org.uk/cgi-bin/user/edfilmfest/nb_full_info_all.pl?id=TIT000254
And if anyone IS going to be around, let me know, maybe we could say hi.

I love these blurbs, because there's always SOMETHING that's wrong. Burwell didn't do High Fidelity (though he WAS on it first), Howard Shore did (and contrary to what I said before about the film having no recognizable score whatsoever, I saw the film again, and the score just sounds incredibly like "real music"---as my brother would call it).Shaun

If there is a Q & A, I wish someone would ask him about "Mystery, Alaska." It seems so different from his other stuff. Also, if he ever sees a possiblity of it being released and if not, why not. Then report back to us.Marc

Now I'm wishing we didn't move from Scotland to Australia 13 years ago.
Hey Pete, you actually live in the same area as I did, and many of my family still do.

Ciao!

Booked my ticket now (& also one for The Hollow Man premiere!), so I'll be there, & will report back for all of you who can't (now how's about that for kind). If I get a chance, I'll ask about Mystery, Alaska, although I still haven't heard it (film hasn't been released here in the UK).
And Richard - well, at least it's not like you moved a couple of weeks ago or something. Now that WOULD be annoying.

Brilliant news for me, Pete M! I live in a remote corner of Spain, but am "going home" in August. I'll make sure I make a date with Carter amongst all the beers!
