I read recently that this film is to be re-made to create the film Welles wanted before it was cut by the studio. That is a case for debate in itself. But if the project is realised, who should follow on from Herrmann?

I haven't seen the film or heard the music but Herrmann is so in vogue these days that it would be nice to have a re-recording/re-arrangement of the score similar to what was done with "Cape Fear" and "Psycho". I think that some of the earlier scores from the 40's etc
can stand the test of time and would still be effective in modern films if they were re-recorded/orchestrated or were given a few "modern" technological touches etc, that didn'nt affect the original music too much. I mean if they can remake classic films almost scene for scene then why shouldn't the same be done with the score? Gae

The score of the original Herann score is
    on the Preamble Label.(PRCD 1783)
    released in 1990.
Tony Bremner conducting the Australian Symphony Orchestra.
I never saw the movie, but I love this CD
    so much.
The music is so intimate and with a period
    feeling.
Also is printed on the CD:
    Bernard Herrmann antology Vol 1.
But I'd never saw the vol 2.

Is this a re-make of Ambersons or an attempt to restore Ambersons using stills and such?

If it's a re-make, a new version of Ambersons, does it use Welles' original script or is it a new adaptation?

Since Scorsese's Age of Innocence was an attempt to capture some of the feel of Ambersons, Elmer Bernstein might be a good choice for the project, though I'm sure many composers would be fine for a period drama.

Although Welles' version is truncated, it would be near-impossible to create a new Ambersons that could come close to he did with the project. I've never read the original novel or any other by Booth Tarkington, so I'm not even certain how close an adaptation Welles' film is. It seems like a strange choice for a modern film in any case since the main character is such a spoiled pompous character for most of the story. In fact, wasn't this thing already done as a British mini-series for television?

The IMDb lists a TV miniseries, but absolutely no information except title and projected release (2001).

I read something about the big-screen remake a week or two ago ... I believe the director is Alfonso Arau of LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE fame, and that he intends to follow the original Welles script scene for scene.

Marcelo, I didn't realise that recording was available. Thanks. I agree with you Lou, Bernstein would be a good choice. As far as I know this new version of the original is being shot in Ireland.
