I just ordered Hard Rain, which will be the first of his work I own. I would appreciate if you could tell me, what other scores I should pick up of his work?
So, if you have any suggestions, please let me know. Thanks.Regards,

Young has an under rated talent.
Check out Murder in the First, and Urban Lengend before they disapear!
Both of completly different types of scores, but wonderfully done.

HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER II
THE FLY II
DEF-CON 4 (compilation album)well, anything with his name on it really ... if you go after the terrific URBAN LEGEND, remember that there are two versions, the Milan issue (wasn't it Milan?) with a shorter rendition of the score and some songs, and the longer promo version Young produced which was released through Intrada (wasn't it Intrada? well, whoever.)
I think Intrada still has NORMA JEAN & MARILYN available for very little money ... very sweet, laid-back tunes.
If you're into much crazier stuff, they might still have cheap copies of THE VAGRANT available. Very post-modern, lunatic writing -- you'll never hear anything else quite like it. That much, I can promise you.
Tell us what you think of HARD RAIN when it comes in. It's one of his more conventional scores, but it's also a VERY good one, certainly among the finest action scores of its year (1998). (actually it was ready well before that, and you can still see trailers on rental tapes calling the movie THE FLOOD, but for some reason the studio decided to sit on it for a LONG time, and then retitle it. It's not a terrible picture, I think they just weren't sure how to market it.)

I remember seeing that title. When I first rented The Ghost and The Darkness, it had the trailer and it was called The Flood. I don't know why it was delayed, but I know the studio changed the title so that people wouldn't think it was just another disaster movie. Still haven't gotten around to checking it out, but I do want to see it. (Perhaps the reason I haven't rented it is because of Minnie Driver!)NP: Escape From New York expanded - "The President Is Gone" (First time listening to it, almost done, but I've already determined the rating: **/*****. Definitely not Carpenter's best score! And such a great film, too!)

I've always liked his georgeous score for Species. It's only available as a promo, but it's worth it.Murder in the First is excellent, and I had a hard time finding that one, too.
I also liked his score for Judicial Consent. Nothing particularly new there, but it is well-crafted and engrossing. The Intrada CD sounds great, too.

At least one of the tracks on Fly IIsounds as if could be right out of Goldsmith's Alien (that's a compliment). Aside from that, I still have to hear more of his work.NP: Good idea, I'll put in Fly II

You're right Rocco Rock, Urban Legend the suck version with 15 minutes was released on Milan and Young's personal promo was released by Intrada and it's long gone. A shame too because it's a terrific horror score. My recommendations for Chris Young score are like this:The Big Kahuna A jazzy, swinging and dramatic score. Although it's short but it's fun nonetheless.
Unforgettable A really underrated score and movie. Very dramatic and exciting.
Tales From the Hood Ohhhh!!!! a nice horror masterpiece and the movie is fun as well.
Murder At 1600 A thrilling action score that deserved a legal release.
Murder In The First A suprisingly, dramatic score that made you wonder why this guy hadn't gotten bigger projects at the time.
Rounders A moody, and dramatic score that is surprising breath of fresh air. And definetly one that gets repeated listens on my player.
Set It Off A solid, action score that has been overlooked. Varese didn't.
The Man Who Knew Too Little A terrific comedy score (his first) with Goldsmith-esque In Like Flint and Mancini's Pink Panther thrown in too boot. Fun, fun, fun.
Hard Rain (I still call it The Flood, it's a better title) Very exciting action score, worth getting for the right price. Go to Chris Young site because there's a funny story concerning this score.
The Vagrant Definetly, the wackiest and most off the wall score I've ever heard. Toys and odd instrumentation galore.
And let's not forget his upcoming score to Bless the Child which is being released on GNP Cresendo on August 8. which should be a killer score.

Personally speaking I loved Hard Rain, the film that is. I do remember liking the music, though once I had read some interesting reviews I decided to get it. Anyways, I have planned on starting an collection of his work for quite some time, I guess this was the perfect time to do so.
As for the score, I have wanted to get this CD for about 2 years or so. You can read the thread "Soundtrack Buying?" for why I hadn't until just now. Either way, I just found out it had gone OOP. Of course this being an Milan title.

I was searching practically everywhere for an few weeks without any luck. Luckily right when I was about to give up, I had found one online store that had 1 copy left. Talk about cutting it close.

sabbey,If you eventually get all those great Chris Young horror (or at least "heavy drama") scores, try to find Haunted Summer. Absolutely beautiful, delicate, magical...(and, I'll ask this again, does ANYONE see the similarities with Goldsmith's The Wind And The Lion? So different, I know, but...)

how about JENNIFER 8 and COPYCAT? these are my Young favorites
Young is one of the best composers - if he scored the next Batman or had scored X-Men (why Michael "boring" Kamen?) I would feel much better.

RAPID FIRE is in dire need of an expansion/promo. Much of the best orchestral stuff from the movie isn't on the album because Varese wouldn't spring for it.SET IT OFF, mentioned above, is indeed excellent, and an offbeat approach to an action score.

How much stuff is missing?I have not seen the movie, and I will just say that I am not too fond of the Rapid Fire score in its present release.
Sounds like Beyond Rangoon in parts. Or is it that Beyond Rangoon sounds like Rapid Fire?

The latter.I haven't seen the picture in eight years, and am unlikely to see it again, but I remember some big orchestral stuff for the ending, particularly when Brandon Lee walks out of the burning warehouse, or whatever it is. I know Christopher Young was extremely unhappy with how much of the cooler stuff got left off the disc.

Well, now that I have received and listened to Hard Rain, I can see what you all are talking about!

I loved the score, maybe it's just me, but I love scores that use rock, jazz and R&B instruments with the orchestra. The harmonicas were darn cool IMO.
I must admit, it was not quite what I remembered from the film. While some of it brought the images from the film to mind. All in all, an excellent score. And good enough that I almost went and purchased more of his work today. However, with no cash in my wallet, it isn't a good thing.

I noticed some of the scores you all mentioned are still available, so I will try to pick up as many as possible, as soon as possible.

In the meantime, I was wondering if anyone could help me with CD-R' of Species and Virtuosity?

There must be a dozen threads along this line: "I've heard 'score X' by Chris Young (I bet that if you added the number of Young threads to the number of Silvestri threads, you'd have a dozen, at least) and I want to hear more. Any suggestions?"I, personally, favor his harder-to-find works, like:
TALES FROM THE HOOD
VIRTUOSITY
SPECIES
HUSH
MURDER AT 1600
URBAN LEGENDThank heaven for CD-Rs.

yeah, no problemo.
I'll have to send track titles via email, as my printer has just about gone the way of the dodo, or it will very soon if it continues to pee me off.hey, email me the URL for the Robo Aleste again. Once I get 'em downloaded, it'll be no problem to burn.
I lost the email, in the midst of other burning duties/ computer spring cleaning, etc..NP -- Ninth Gate, Wojo Kilar

How long HAVE they been promising us WONDER BOYS? My theory is that they're saving it back for the fall, when WONDER BOYS will be reissued to theaters, in hopes of Oscar nominations (no video till next year, gang.)

Bummer! I hope it still is coming out, from all points it looks like it will. Since Varese Sarabande and other sites still list it as upcoming.IIRC, I think the last release date I saw for it, was sometime late August. Hopefully that is true, since how long can we wait before we start rioting.

Well, if you really want to hear some of Chris Young's best work, I'd suggest seeking his score for "Haunted Summer", it's a good score and a great album to listen to apart from the film.It was released by SILVA SCREEN UK,I thnk they still have a few copies kicking around, as well as the English editon of HELLRAISER.
If your interested go to:
http://www.silvascreen.co.uk/
I'd also suggest you try and find his score for "Flowers in the Attic", it was released by INTRADA and they might still have a few copies laying arond.Good Hunting
