Dark City had some brilliant music in it so I would recommend that one...BUT I also hear Merlin is well done as well so why don't you do yourself a favor and just pick both of em up.

Dark City can be described just as the title suggests. It is very dark.Except for a few spots here and there. But the last track in my opinion is worth the price of the cd alone. It's sheer power is amazing. It's twelve minutes of incredible music.I heard the music in the X-Men trailer and knew I had to have it.

Merlin is a wonderful score. There is a very good theme, some great action/adventure music and quieter more melodic
moments.Plus it is an exceptionally long Varese Sarabande release.Clocking in at over 70 minutes.

Overall they are both excellent scores by Trevor Jones. But if I had to choose one,I would probably go with Merlin.Only because of the amount of music on the disc.If you find Dark City for a reasonable price,go for it.The final track is pure power and beauty.I was lucky enough to find both of these scores used for wonderful prices. Also I regularly see Dark City used for decent prices,so it is probably not that hard to find in used cd shops.

I love the MERLIN soundtrack and as an added incentive to buy it, it just popped up on a deletions list for July sent by our cd distributor to the store where I work.

Kyp, if it were between the two, I'd get Merlin. Dark City can wait. While Dark City is a great Trevor Jones score, Merlin has a lot more to offer in terms of variety and emotionally stimulating content.

    Hmmm...a very sad day.

Kyp, I would suggest Dark City, the powerful cues just leave you breathless.

Yet Merlin is quite good as well. But get Dark City first. Even the songs aren't too bad.

Oh yes, why is it a sad day? Cause normally Jeron and I always agree. Not today. Now let me go to my corner and cry...

NP: Angela's Ashes(haven't listened to it is a while, it is a beautiful score).

Wow that's a tough call between these two scores. I like Dark City. I found a copy of this score for 4.99 one day because I had to have it once again because I had it before and traded it. Then one day I sat down and saw the movie again and Jones score flourished against the wacky storyline. I was there was more music instead of those useless songs. It's ironic that most of the finale sounds a bit like his underrated and exciting score to Desperate Measures, which is highly worth getting) I love the final cue, it's really the highlight of this magnificent score. Merlin is very good and it's length really represents the best moments of the this extremely lenghty score which clocks at over 2 hours and 17 minutes. I kid you not! I regret trading it, I'm planning to go out and get a copy of it soon before it goes outtaprint. But in fairness both scores would be a worthy edition to anyone's collection.

While both scores are great, Merlin is one of my favorite scores and has my favorite main theme of Jones', he best score ever probably. And as everyone says Dark City is also great and the Final Track "You Have The Power" is an amazing action cue with an 112 piece orchestra and electronics that seems to go on forever! Definetly worth the price of the whole disc, but there are a few other really good ones in there. Plus Dark City includes the trailer music by Hughs Hall, which is cool gothlic techno piece.

I recommend getting Merlin for now, since it's Jones' best work, and is disapearing from the market.
Also I have an extra copy of Dark City thats unopened, maybe we can trade?

    I'll put it this way:

    I love BOTH scores.

Of course, Dark City is an extremely powerful score, and essential to its film. The 36 minutes on the CD is not near the whole score, but is a worthy representation.
Most of the songs are neato, too, and one is a piece used in the theatrical trailer.

And Merlin, is simply wonderful. The LSO sounds great. The CD is arranged into several very long suites, on the order of 15-20 minutes (give or take).

I've seen the DVD for "Dark City" and been tempted to buy it but haven't seen the movie...is it worth getting ( I'm a sci-fi fan...Blade Runner, Alien trilogy etc etc) Info please....is it worth buying and does this "magnificent" final track play over the end titles? If so I would probably buy the DVD on that recommendation alone. Thanks for any help! Gae

    Gae,

Dark City is at the very least a visual triumph. The story is also compelling, and fast-paced. It's one of those that I couldn't stop watching from beginning to end. One of the best movies of 1998, snubbed in every category, presumably for it's genre.

The magnificent final track plays over the final battle between good and not-so-good, as well the resolution. It is amazing. you gotta see it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

how many exclamation marks should I write to emphasize my point?

and hey: Jennifer Connelly's in it.
