Has anyone noticed that since there are a lot of scores available, there are times you want an particular CD, however for some reason it is always passed on for another? Getting to a point where it is sometime later and you still have yet to buy it?

I notice that happens quite an bit with me, since I only have an small amount to spend each month. An example would be, "The Rock" it took me until just about 6 months ago to get it, and I was lucky enough to get an copy of The Phantom earlier this year. However that is after wanting them since they came
    out.

I guess I am lucky compared to some, since I always get at least 2-10 CDs a month. Though even at that amount, there are many needed to be passed each and every month.

Here is an small list of scores I have wanted for quite sometime, however for some strange reason have yet to buy. Probably because of the money, Duh!

    Forest Gump - Alan Silvestri
    Contact - Alan Silvestri
    Brainstorm - James Horner
    Jumanji - James Horner
    Basic Instinct - Jerry Goldsmith
    Rambo 1-3 - Jerry Goldsmith
Enemy of the State - Trevor Rabin
Much Ado about Nothing - Patrick Doyle
    Carlito's Way - Patrick Doyle
The Usual Suspects - John Ottman
    Incognito - John Ottman
The Joy Luck Club - Rachel Portman
    Hard Rain - Christopher Young
Arabian Nights - Richard Harvey (However, I think it is because of the supposed defect in this case)

Many others as well, however if I were to list everyone, I would be here for weeks if not months. Who knows maybe even years!

    Regards,
    Sean Robert Abbey

See, this is why I always buy the score on the release date. So then when the next week comes I'll buy the next thing becuase I've already bought the previous CD I wanted.
If I wait too long then the want list will pile up, and I won't have ebough money to buy them all at once.

    Lol.

I think this phenomenon happens to us all, except Bill Gates' relatives who frequent this board; and since I joined the net about a year ago it has gotten even more pathetic. I see rare scores I wanna order over the net, then there are the new releases, the used cd sections, the rare gems that appear outta nowhere...oh, yes... and Jeron's habit of sending me MP3's that make me rush to the store buy the darn score, get back to the pad and while listening to the music come up with a plan to rob the biggest bank in town. Sad thing is, I haven't come up with a good pland yet...

A sad bunch of people we are...

I have the same problem with leaving certain scores for a later date:

    POWDER
    EARTHQUAKE
    THE MISSOURI BREAKES

These are a few of the scores I constantly see and pass on them, thinking i will get at another time.

This happens to me constantly. Although since I got a second job recently, money is less of a problem. But I seem to have most of the interesting scores you can get in Vienna (not because my collection is so large, but because the variety here is very poor).

It took me a long time to get Basic Instinct, or The Cowboys, or Born on the 4th of July (because of the songs, although when I finally bought the CD, I discovered that I like most of them), or Total Recall, or Empire of the Sun. I'm still hestitating to pick up Mulan, because I've never heard the score and there are so many songs on the album.

I passed on Indy 2, The Secret of Nihm, The Adventures of Robin Hood and others, and now I can't find them anymore.

But I have to order you to get Much Ado About Nothing right tomorrow, Sean! It's a must-have!

This is a phenomenon all of us soundtrack freaks have dealt with at some point or other.

It happened to me just yesterday - I went to Tower Records for the first time and found all these Goldsmith albums I'd been meaning to pick up forever - ended up getting Basic Instinct, Secret of NIMH (like Marian, I had passed this up at a Virgin Megastore, only to never find it again. Luckily, Tower had a copy. I think it's OOP), and some new headphones. Also saw Gladiator for the first time - almost an indescribable film experience.

Sean, you HAVE to order Brainstorm from CDNOW ASAP! One of Horner's magnum opuses that perfectly applies his youthful, exciting style to a mature movie - if only he still wrote like this!

I keep track of all the CDs I want on my Amazon wish list. While I don't usually buy the discs from Amazon, I think their wish list is a great way to keep track of things that I want to buy. Of course, Amazon doesn't carry the Prometheus and FSM releases, so I have to keep track of those myself.

Yesterday I went out to find Chicken Run. First I went to the mall... Sam Goody didn't even have it (their soundtrack section is a waste, anyway). Next, I went to Record Town. I think we all know that Record Town's prices aren't the best, but I haven't seen them too outrageous until now. They had one copy of Chicken Run with a price of $19.99! Twenty bucks for a normal, 'unlimited,' non-bootleg, single disc album? Anyhow, I said da'heck with that and went across the mall parking lot to Borders. I ended up purchasing it there for $17.99. Still a bit too expensive, but atleast it was a couple of bucks cheaper.

I only wish I had a local Virgin Megastore... (but then again, I'd be even poorer than usual). This one was in Orlando, Florida. The Tower records was in Nashville (nope, Memphis doesn't have one of those, either ) It's really a great score, kind of a precursor to Legend, with Goldsmith's magnificent early '80s impressionism found in Twilight Zone, Poltergeist, and so many others.

Actually I do the same. However unless you have an time machine, it is impossible to do that for most of the tiles we would want.

Either way, that is a good strategy. However it doesn't really help, for already released CDs. Which was the point I was trying to make.

Anyway, I have been pre ordering the scores I think I'll want beforehand, for the last 6-12 months. Unfortunately, there are always times I will find a score I didn't want originally, but found out was worth getting. Case in point, Chicken Run. I had no plan whatsoever to get this until I read all the great posts and heard an suite of it. Definitely a lot better, than my first impression of what it would be like.

Personally, now that I pre order the scores I think I'll want. I noticed that I usually get less older CDs, since after pre ordering the titles I want, I am pretty much spent out for the month. I guess it is time to start earning more money.

Yeah, but I didn't want to have to go through the hassles to do that. Which is the reason I am waiting. Perhaps by the time I do get it, there will be less likely a chance that I will get an defective copy? At least that is my feelings toward it.

Actually I almost bought it an few weeks ago, but got another score instead. The defect is the only reason I can think of for skipping it.

Anyway, I'll be getting it soon enough.

Don't forget the promos and bootlegs we all love.

Anyway, I do the same thing as well, I also happen to use the CDNOW wish list too. The only problem is, as you said they don't list all the scores we want. And there are some that are on one site, but not available on another. For an example there was some OOP scores that was listed on CDNOW, though Amazon didn't have it, and vice versa.

Personally speaking, I wouldn't mind just making an wish list on the PC, using software like Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Word. Actually I used to have one, though it became too much of an hassle to update, and got "so" big, it was more of an "heartache" than anything else. To see ones I most likely would never get, kind of bummed me out, so I decided just to dump it.

Though maybe now is a good time to start again, however this time keep it down to just the ones I know 100% I'd like to have? Though it still would be pretty big in my case.

Man! twenty bucks for an CD is totally an rip off. Personally I haven't seen it over $17 myself. And was able to get it from CDNOW for $12.58 plus tax and shipping, though even with that, it was less than $17. Have you thought about ordering CDs online? It really does help, where money is concerned!

I noticed that I can get an CD or two more doing it online, than going to an regular store. Even though I like buying in a actual store better, the prices are just too high anymore IMO.

Hopefully, retail stores will get that through their heads, and price their CDs accordingly. If not, then the chances that within 25-50 years, there will be no actual stores, probably will be true. Which I would think they wouldn't want to happen, so do something about it. Sheesh!

I usually do buy most of my music online, since the nearest music store is an hour away from here and since the prices are so much cheaper (even with shipping charges.)

In Maine, the prices I typically see on soundtrack albums is $16-$18...

In the case of Chicken Run, I had a few bucks burning a hole in my pocket so I went to the mall instead of using the plastic online. I figured it would be easy finding Chicken Run in stores since it is a recent release.

Another thing, The Hollow Man is now listed for sale on most of the online merchants for about $13.99! Amazon - Buy.com

Marian, re: MULAN -- the songs are wretched, all of them, but the music is worth having. Although if I were you, I might hold out for the Academy promo version, which is almost the complete score; and there's another boot floating around that IS apparently complete (Brad Wills played the opening bit for me a couple of weeks ago -- and I'd thought the promo version was complete. Live and learn.)

(we burned the main title onto the end of my promo disc and sent it to our good buddy Mark Hatfield, whom you might wish to ask a bit more about MULAN ... )

Now that I think of it, I said "the songs are wretched," but Goldsmith manages to incorporate bits of a couple of the songs into his own score, and they work amazingly well. What can ya say? He's a wizard.

NP: TORA TORA TORA (FSM version that came in today) (much of it really quite dark and strange, typical Goldsmith early-seventies stuff ... I'm intrigued by the many early hints of CAPRICORN ONE, and even ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES, which he did the following year -- the prepared-piano writing seems very similar)

Indeed! And I also found several other discs I've been looking for which the simple search didn't find. More money to spend...

NP: Lionheart (they say this is a "film score", but that's complete nonsense of course. I mean, I've noticed songs in movies, but this are no songs. Sounds kind of weird. Like classical actually. Don't know what the connection with the movie is supposed to be)

You know! I guess it is more widespread than I thought. Seeing as I rarely go to retail stores for CD' anymore, I was always seeing $17 as the highest price the discs were being sold for. Still could be better IMO though.

However I finally went back again the other day, and again today. The first store was an small independent store, prices were rather high, but pretty good compared to a lot of the other stores in the area.

The second store was way worse, you can tell prices have definitely gone up in price since I was buying regularly from them. Most of the CD' I was looking at were at least $2-$4 over MSRP. X-Men and most new CD', or at least popular new CD' were $20. And even the lower priced CD' were $2-$5 over what you can get at most online stores and a good portion of retail outlets.

Sorry for the rant, but it has gotten to an unrealistic point, no wonder why people are using the net to get music for free. And the retail outlets wonder why they keep losing money to online stores and the web in general. Duh, lower the prices sherlock.

Anyone have any opinions on the price of CD' nowadays?

    Regards,
    Sean Robert Abbey

I usually tend to purchase my soundtracks from Amazon.com, seeing as they tend to keep the ones I want in stock, and I can get it relatively quickly. (I had to wait several weeks to get my "ET" soundtrack, though).

By The way "The Rock" is one of my favorite soundtracks as well.

Same here as well. I order CD' about 85-90% of the time online, and at stores like Amazon, Barnes and Noble and CDnow. I would much prefer to just buy from stores like Intrada and Screen Archives, since they release CD' themselves and any money I spend would help get more out. Unfortunately, I have very limited money to spend. So I have to find the best deals I can, which is the above mentioned online giants.

Hopefully something will occur to get prices down at all CD shops, both off-line as well as online too.

BTW, The Rock is one of my favorite scores. Too bad some people can't see the Media Ventures composers as what they are, "good composers".

My version of Mulan features stuff from the commercial CD, as well as the promo.

38 tracks, coming in at about 73 minutes.
And, I have a 39th track tucked away somewhere else.
Opens with the "Suite from Mulan." gotta love CD burners.

Unfortunately cd prices in the state of Texas have risen. Before Circuit City decided to become a "Gangsta Rap" soundtrack section they had the best prices $11.99 to $13.99. now their soundtrack section along with our Hastings superstore and the mall, quite frankly suck. I don't even think Hastings has updated their soundtrack section since TPM came out. Well they finally opened a Best Buy here, but for some reason their soundtrack section sucks as well. So I just usually hop in my car and drive a hour south to Austin or about 2 hrs north to Dallas to find my scores. Or I order from Intrada or Footlight. I couldn't believe when STAR TREK INSURRECTION came out the stores had it priced at $20.99. I did cave in and buy THE PATRIOT for $17.99 at the Virgin Megastore near Dallas because I was at weeklong conference up there. I find Barnes & Noble to be an excellent place to find scores especially one located in Austin, but their pricing can be high on certain discs. Tower Records has two locations near me, but they have gotten too high in pricing. The Virgin Megastore near Dallas has a great selection, but the pricing again. It's a no win situation.

I can't help but to wonder, just how many people are buying the CD' at these rip-off prices?

To be honest, I just can't think of why anyone would actually buy them at that price at all, when they are available cheaper elsewhere. Or at least on any regular basis. Who knows, maybe it's just me.

Another thing, maybe I am naive. But are these retail stores selling them at a higher price because they are getting less money, because of online stores, such as Amazon and CDNOW? Or are they just wanting as much profit as possible, even if it means screwing over their customers?

It would seem to me to get more people to buy your CD', you should offer them at an comparable price that the other stores are selling them for too, counting online stores.
