    Okay. The big day has arrived. You're having a huge party, and all you're favorite film composers have excepted your invitation and are on your doorstep (probably chewing each other out for stealing their work!)

    So who do you invite to such a party? Not a special party in particular, just one where you're going to hang out with your favorites composers for a few hours, have some drinks, and just have some plain ol' fun.

    So who do you invite? Here's my invite list (in no order whatsoever):

    Jerry Goldsmith
    Alan Silvestri
    Elia Cmiral
    Elmer Bernstein
    John Williams
    Hans Zimmer
    John Carpenter (more director than composer, but who cares!?)
    John Debney
    George S. Clinton
    Bruce Broughton

    Oh, and by the way: you're limited to 10 guests only. (Hey! Got save money for burgers, don't ya?)

    NP: The Magnificent Ten - "Welcome to the Party, Pals!" (A specially-composed seven minute-long suite by Mr. Bernstein for me to play as I welcome each guest as they step inside!)

    David Arnold
    Basil Poledouris
    James Horner
    Hans Zimmer
    Christopher Young
    James Newton Howard
    Joel McNeely

    The only other guy I'd LIKE to invite would have to be Trevor Jones. This would be one helluva party, if only to watch THOSE guys interact. I might be happy just sitting back an enjoying the show.

    I'll have a confirmation on Broughton by tomorrow... I'm getting to meet him! Woohoo!!

    Do they have to be composers who are still living, or can any film composer ever be invited?

    Bernard Herrmann (would probably **** everyone off)
    Miklos Rosza
    Dimitri Tiomkin (would alienate everyone with his ego)
    Jerry Goldsmith
    Ron Goodwin
    Ron Grainer
    Max Steiner
    Alfred Newman
    Fred Karlin
    Gil Melle
    Erich Wolfgang Korngold

    I would also invite James Horner so we could have someone on which to play pin the tail on the donkey; also Hans Zimmer to use as a pinata.

    If we can invite dead and ill composers, Henry Mancini and Dudley Moore would be a riot together.

    Greg, I agree with your choices of Gil Melle and Bernard Herrmann. Gil could talk about his microscopes and paintings, and Benny would be there complaining about everything. Heaven!

    Add masters of wit like Marc Shaiman and Michael J. Lewis, stir in a bit of dead Friedhofer (was it he who said that all scores for Hunchback Of Notre Dame films should be quasimaodal?), and we'd all have a great time.

    Oh, and let's not forget sweet old John Scott. In fact, it might be easier to make a list of who we WOUDN'T invite!

    Oh, you liked UNDER FIRE too? Not many people have heard of that one. I'll bet whoever wrote it's got at least five of the suckers. I'm not sure UNDER FIRE won anything, though.

    Goldsmith about to conduct PATTON at the London Symphony in 1989: "Well, that one got Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Photography ... guess who lost."

    (Who did he lose to? Francis Lai, for LOVE STORY, of course. I'll bet Goldsmith wanted to throw up.)

    (I am reminded of spotting him the year he was up for HOOSIERS, sitting a couple of rows behind Jane Fonda. He'd already lost and was looking plenty disgruntled.) (I mean I saw this on TV, I wasn't THERE! Unless I was one of the presenters and am just lying to you.)

    well, ultimately, Lai will be (and already is, no doubt) long forgotten, and Goldsmith's name and legacy will go on forever.

    but I guess it is kinda embarrasing to be the only loser in what could have, and should have been, an Oscar sweep for Under Fire. good flick.

    Haiku Recipes!
    Here's one of my favorites;
    You'll really LOVE it!

    This GREAT Recipe
    Makes ALMOND GRAHAM COOKIES,
    A delicious treat!

    Preheat your oven
    To three twenty-five degrees;
    No hotter, OK?

    Take Graham Crackers
    Place them on a foil covered
    Cookie baking sheet.

    Next, pour Sliced Almonds
    Covering Graham Crackers.
    (About 4 ounces.)

    The Almond covered
    Graham Crackers on the sheet;
    Now set them aside.

    Take one stick of each:
    Butter and Margarine too;
    Melt them together.

    When they are melted,
    Add one half cup of Sugar;
    Stir it together.

    When it gets bubbly,
    Cook it for four more minutes;
    Then the mixture’s done.

    Pour the Goop over
    The Almonds and the Crackers;
    Cover evenly.

    Now it’s time to bake;
    It only takes ten minutes!
    In your hot oven.

    Don’t burn your fingers
    Pulling them from the oven;
    Let them cool down now.

    Cut them or break them
    Into some smaller pieces;
    Time to eat them up!

    You won’t believe how
    Great these little cookies taste!
    You can’t stop eating!

    NP: Lionheart (by the same guy whose name we never remember, I believe. I'm not so sure though that he got heaps of Oscars. He'll probably have many nominations, but do you really think they can remember his name when they have to give their votes?)
