Finally got a DVD player. Well, it's not my first since my father brougth me one from USA last year. But, believe it or not, it burned because of a power failure and is at the repair shop till today!!!

So I just said "To the hell with it! I NEED a DVD player!" and got a new one.

Unable to hold myself, I went crazy and bought some titles I found:

    - THE THING (where's in the "music score menu" labeled in the cover, anyway? Had a great time hearing John Carpenter and Kurt Russel laughing out loud at the gory sequences)

    - LA CONFIDENTIAL (just loved the isolated score track)

    - BRAZIL (which is not from the Criterion Collection. But I'll get this some day!!)

    - HOOK (yeah, I like it. Sorry...)

    - HIGLANDER (director's cut)

    - HIGLANDER II (the renegade version)

    - THE MEANING OF LIFE

    - LIFE OF BRIAN (yes, the one from Criterion Collection!! Lucky Bastard!!!)

Well... silly me. Just wanted to share my happines with you nice people.

    Cheers!

To hear the ISO score for The Thing, I believe you have to select the language menu and let it sit, and will play out completely. At least, that's what I read somewhere.

Carpenter and Russell sure did sound like they were having fun, hu? It's one of my favorite commentaries. (Now I'm just waiting for the Escape From New York and Big Trouble In Little China DVDs, w/commentary, that Russell mentions at the very end).

    Andre,

The Thing isolated score is in the special features of the documentary. There's a lot of score in there, but it isn't one you can watch with the film- it is the music used in the documentary. Still, the good stuff is there.

    Great DVD, really.

    What's this Criterion Collection stuff?

are there 2 DVD versions made of the same movies, just one has a bit more extras?

NP -- The Green Mile DVD, which seriously needed an isolated score to let Th. Newman's score have the peoper presentation it deserves.

Just coincidence? I just got myself a DVD this past week as well. And, of course, the first thing I popped in was ALIEN. And, frankly, as much as I adore all of what Goldsmith wrote, used and unused, Scott's choice in many places to let the action play without underscore works for the better. But, of course, the usage of the Freud selections and the Hanson piece are totally uncalled for. The second disc I slapped in was LOGAN'S RUN. The movie is a joke of course, with its only redeeming feature being Goldsmith's music score. A pity it wasn't isolated, the resolution of the music is 25 times better than the BAY CITIES soundtrack release. Which begs me to wonder, does the Compass III release sound as awful as its predecessor?

    re: Logan's Run
The Chapter III reissue has what I would call "archival" sound quality, with some noticeable tape hiss and a little mag wow, even with the remastering. Haven't heard the original Bay Cities CD, so I really can't compare, though. I'd call Chapter III's quality somewhere between average and low.

    That Alien disc is great!

Andre, get Alien, at least the first one. A must for every Goldsmith fan (I made a 2CD set from the isolated score tracks). I also have Hook - I like the movie, and the DVD is great. Matrix is a fantastic DVD, too, including Don Davis' isolated score and comments by the composer! And the best-produced DVD so far has to be the spectacular 2-disc set for Fight Club.

Hm, 1941 has an isolated score track, right? Is it worth it just for that? I've seen the movie only once, but I found it horrible.

Ah, and there are rumors (only rumors!) that E.T. and another Spielberg movie (forgot which one) will come out in the second half of 2001, and that we might see CE3K at the beginning of the same year!

I also have to get Criterion's Life of Brian, and 2001. I'm thinking about Brazil, too. Be careful if you want to get 12 Monkeys, I think there are at least 3 releases for this one, and the first 2 or so are supposed to have very bad quality.

    DVD rules!

If you love movies (or "film") and you DON'T buy Brazil, I will ridicule you. It's one of the best films ever made (my opinion) and the Criterion presentation of the film is like a lesson in filmmaking for $60. You get Gilliam's director's cut (which is also on the Universal DVD, even though the running time on the back doesn't lead you to believe that) with his commentary on the first disc. The second disc features two documentaries, one of which is the one on Gilliam vs. Sheinberg (oh, '85 was an awful year for filmmakers) and the "Battle" for Brazil. Kamen is among the subjects interviewed (he talks at length about the score, and disparages Sid Sax while doing so; great stuff!). The THIRD disc is UNIVERSAL's "Love Conquers All" cut of Brazil (which, remarkably, STILL gets shown on TV), which is about 50 minutes shorter and makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Included on this disc is a commentary by Brazil expert David Morgan.

I'll repeat. BUY THIS. BUY THIS RIGHT NOW. You deserve to own this.

    Shaun

Marian, the reason I didn't get ALIEN yet is because it will be released in Brasil next week. Yeah, the same DVD, plus portuguese subtitles... I can't wait! It's my favorite horror movie of all time!

And man, I just had a great time while watching the PYTHONS documentary featured on THE LIFE OF BRIAN Criterion DVD. I ****ed my pants seing Graham Chapman imitating Terry Gilliam's american accent when they were flying over the ocean... "HEY GUYS! THERE'S A BUNCH OF WATER DOWN THERE!!"

Shaun, I think Amazon has BRAZIL from Criterion for less than $60! I'm going to order it very soon, since I received my BATTLE OF BRAZIL from them a few weeks ago...
Them I'll be a true HAPPY man!

Hm, I guess this is probably the one I've seen on TV several years ago. I was really annoyed after watching it, but then, I wasn't into Terry Gilliam movies at that time and had expected something very different (Python-like). Looks like I have to get this DVD set.

There was also a European release recently, when I already had my Code1 set. But I wouldn't have bought the European version anyway, because with the isolated score, PAL speedup (movies run 4% faster with the European TV norm) would surely sound strange. Also, they had severe mastering errors on Alien and Alienł and are replacing the discs now. Let's hope the the Brasilian release will be better.

I made an Alien night last Monday, watching all 4 movies on one evening (one night) with some friends. Did I say that DVD rules?

Well, I've tried everything known in the universe to try and get "The Thing" to play the score in the languages section...so far ZIPPO!! I just guess, as usual, we dont have this feature on our region 2 discs. The same occurs with "Dante's Peak". I read that you could hear John Frizzel's score playing in the documentary so I rushed to get my disc out to find it...guess what? The region 2 disc doesn't have the documentary or any feature on it at all..only the movie. I've recently read that "The Witches of Eastwick" has an isolated score on region 2 (U.K.) versions but I'm not falling for that one as theres no mention of it on any of the covers I've seen. Marian, any inside knowledge on this one? One final gripe, the region 2 disc of "The Mummy" doesn't have the isolated score running in the languages menu like it does in the region 1 version. I read that if you go to the languages menu and wait, the entire score plays..well I waited, and waited, and waited and waited until I realised of course, I'm living in the U.K. watching region 2 DVDs, so that means I've been robbed out of another great feature simply cos I live outside of America. Anyone know exactly when all DVDs will be region free? I know that at the moment there is a commission being set up to lower the prices of them in Europe, Disney being one of the supporters. Gae

Gae, there's no isolated score on THE THING DVD as announced in the back cover.

However, you can hear some cues they used on the documentary isolated. But if you have the cd then there's nothing new...

Get rid of the Highlander disc, one of the worst transfers on a DVD in existence. They're re-visitng the movie on DVD later this year, giving it a new DTS 6.1 ES soundtrack and Dolby 5.1 EX track as well as re-doing the transfer.
