. . . what's the deal with Gary Chang? I mean, the scores for Under Siege and The Substitute (the only ones I've heard by him) could've been so much greater, but they stunk! I could scrap maybe a combined total of 5 or 8 minutes' worth of score from both those films of music I like. Under Siege needed the type of score the sequel had.Sorry if I offend anyone by saying this, but has he written any good music?

dantoris,Give a listen to The Island of Dr. Moreau. The movie absolutely stunk (one of the worst of the decade, if not the second half of the 20th century). The score has a few moments, but nothing extraordinary. A couple of moments, though. Perhaps the best use of music in the film, unfortunately, is the source cue, a SONG, used by Ms. Balk as she dances in front of our protagonist.

I loved his score to Firewalker. It's the best thing about the dopey Chuck Norris film. Can you believe this is an alleged comedy-adventure. LOL Definetly worth getting if you see it eventhough it came out an old Varese LP back in 1986. Still worth getting.

I've seen UNDER SIEGE, but perhaps because I didn't care much for the film, I really don't recall any of the score. The only other Chang score that I've heard which hasn't been mentioned yet would be STORM OF THE CENTURY. Though somewhat overly repetitious, it had some interesting moments and I liked the icy cold atmosphere Chang created.

I can't tell if Chang is mediocre, or just subject to the vagaries of the producers and directors he's worked for. John Frankenheimer, a director I admire massively, has used him a great deal, but Frankenheimer, by his own admission, has never been terribly musical. (He's gotten some great scores out of Goldsmith and Bernstein, though, and I love Williams' BLACK SUNDAY.)Chang did one score I thought was TERRIFIC: for the little-known, underrated Michael Caine thriller A SHOCK TO THE SYSTEM. Fascinating jazz-based music performed by the Turtle Island Quartet (and therefore eligible for release on ... that label that does all the jazz stuff, I can't think of its name, but it certainly wasn't one of the usual labels to issue a soundtrack. The database here does not mention it.) Perhaps this is more in line with whatever his real talents happen to be. I couldn't say.

The Island of Dr. Moreau... oy. The best thing about that flick was definitely Ms. Balk. Meeeeow.Really, one of the best scenes in this film is the opening with its trippy main titles and odd music setting a unique atmosphere. This style of opening credits has been used again time and time again, but it was rather original a few years ago.
