"All music publishing rights licensed to LEM (Paris) for the world except Italy (Radio Film Musica) and Japan (CAM, Japan Ltd.)"the preceding is included in the liner of the Mask Records (Italy) CD of John Barry'a King Kong. My question is, and these are the same people who brought us The Black Hole/ Howard the Suck, are these people bootleggers or not?
I bought this disc from Intrada, much cheaper than Hole/ Duck, so I'm just wondering.

Has anybody noticed track 7 is missing the last 15 secs of music? Right after the sound effects fade there is a short build up of the orchestra and it is not on the cd. This was my first soundtrack back in 1977 so I would say I'm very familiar with it.

The music in question is there on my CD, Mark. (I just put it on to make sure.) I always thought that the post-sound-effects music in the cue you mentioned was mixed WAY too low for comfort on the LP, and it seems to be so on my CD as well. Same problem with the opening part of the final cue. And it was just like that on the LP as well.NP: my favorite cue in Barry's KING KONG, the vivid "Incomprehensible Captivity"

It appears I have a faulty cd then, sigh. This is one that definitely needs a remastered and expanded release, minus those damn sound effects.[This message has been edited by Mark Olivarez (edited 03 July 2000).]

is this CD basically the same as the LP release?it's only 40 minutes of music on the CD, about right for an LP.

The thing that says bootleg to me (I've said this before, maybe somebody else can shed light on the subject) about the Hole/Duck disc are those "Bonus Tracks" on the disc. I think it is rare to see non-bootleg disc that contains extra cues that are not related (well, besides the fact that they were composed by Barry) to the other scores...*shrug*

that's a good point Jonathan, but why wouls an illegitimate establishment print emails, fax numbers, copyright info, etc on their discs? Can we consider Mask Records to be the same as the German Tsunami label?
anyone know what else this Mask Records has put out?

Some of the European labels have justified the releases of what many of us would call "bootlegs" as legitimate issues that somehow managed to fall through the cracks. Something to do with the multiple legalisms surrounding the formation of the EEC. Goldsmith said something about this to SOUNDTRACK! magazine last year, to the effect that it was ridiculous to pretend these issues were legal, but frankly, from the most narrowly legalistic point of view, they may actually be.NP: QB VII (unambiguously legal Intrada CD, from that fellow whose hair is coveted by Sean Connery)

I had the LP from years back, but found the cd release at Tower Records right in the soundtrack section. You bet I grabbed that sucker quick. Only $17.99. And mine is identical to the LP. No 15 seconds missing.

The legitmacy of this release was discussed on the John Barry discussion list. Someone who lives in Rome decided to check out the address, phone number, and fax. Here is what they said:posted 07-05-2000 01:37 PM PT (US)

Hmmm... Tower Records has a strict "No Bootlegs" policy, which means that if King Kong were not legit (and I think it was, when I worked there a friend of mine got a promo of it) it probably wouldn't be there.I think the "Mask" thing might just be a coincidence...

That's what I would think. Tower wouldn't deal with bootlegs. I would think that they could get in some serious trouble in doing that. Which is why I thought it was just an import. But either way, I don't care, I got it.

I have both of the discs in question. As to their legality, I have no idea. But I can tell you that I am certainly glad I bought them, because I like the music.
For the life of me I can't think of one single reason why I should be deprived of the joy of listening to music I love just because some multi-billion dollar conglomerate owned recording empire gets its underwear in a knot over what they should release based solely on what they think they can squeeze the most money out of. If they want my money, then get the cd on the shelf. Otherwise, I'll give give it to someone else.
