    For those of you who have heard Chris Boardman's score for Payback, you should also listen to its influence from the gritty David Shire score, "Taking Of Pelham 1-2-3" if you haven't already. It's groovy retro suspense.

    There should be some clips at the FSM Retrograde website. Check it out if you haven't heard it yet. I'm sure you'd enjoy it.

    Too right Al, I'm also hoping 'Pelham' will get shown on tv again soon as a tribute to Walter Mathau.

    This much, I know: He's been very active in films in the '70s and '80s; he scored, among others:

    SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER (imagine the cash he rakes in for his three cuts on the CD)
    NORMA RAE (he won an Oscar for a song)
    RETURN TO OZ (everyone gushes over this score; just how good is it?)
    SHORT CIRCUIT (my favorite score; I'd love to
    see a soundtrack release);

    he's a Buffalo native; his score for HOMEWARD BOUND was thrown out; he currently works in television.

    I read somewhere that film composers who currently work in television are NOT there by choice.

    His score for APOCALYPSE NOW was also junked. BTW, the upcoming special edition DVD of SHORT CIRCUIT will have an isolated music and effects track. For other Shire gems, try FAREWELL MY LOVELY (LP only dammmit!) and MONKEY SHINES (unreleased dammit!) and LAST STAND AT SABER RIVER (Intrada).

    The last TV score of his that I recall is the remake of Rear Window.

    I doubt very much that it is an enjoyable score away from its film, but Shire did really effective work for Hyams' 2010: THE YEAR WE MAKE CONTACT.

    David's Return to Oz score is excellent... one of his best. I wouldn't mind having Short Circuit, either. I'd be interested in hearing his rejected Homeward Bound score... though it's funny, I just got through listening to BOTH of Broughton's HB scores, and as always, the themes send chills up my spine. I wouldn't trade Bruce's work on the HB movies for anything.

    Actually, I have Shire's score to 2010. It is one of my favorite scores, outside of what Vangelis has done, to use synthesizers. IMHO, extremely effective apart from the score. It is a shame that it's not more widely available.
    Ironically, I've never heard any of his other works. Sounds like he's quite prolific, though.

    Homeward Bound 2 pales in comparison to his score for the first film. It is still fun with a few thrilling action cues, but it seems to have a much lighter care-free tone. The love theme is very nice, but still, the score from the first film is very sweeping and sounds much more like an epic. I thought the first was overall more fun and more dramatic.
    After all, Broughton's Homeward Bound scores are all about the performances of the theme, and the second score didn't deliver enough of it with as much flair as the original. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't as impressive either.

    I just thought I'd comment on this so that if any of you fellow film score buyers decide to pick one of these up, I think you should make it the first.
